I was just walking in the woods the other day and my dog retrieved a perfectly cut rabbit's foot and gave it to me. I don't believe in coincidence, so what does everyone think of that symbol? Does anyone have some experience with that particular object in ritual and/or worship? Tomorrow's new moon is extra-special for me, and I would like to include it in my ritual. Any suggestions?

I've always thought of them as lucky. I'd Wiki "Rabbits" and check out their myth and folklore section at the bottom. It's pretty interesting.

You mean one of those rabbit's feet that are sold in stores?

Good idea :)

Totem pages would mention symbolism as well (I'm not saying it is a totem)--

If it's real, that's unlucky for the rabbit. If it's a fake, who knows.

Well there is a rabbit, moon connection. Jade Rabbit lives on the moon and is a keeps company with the goddess Chang'e. Its Jade Rabbits job to make the elixir of life for the moon goddess.

I think they are hideous. I won't even touch them and I'm glad we don't see them very often anymore. I wonder if places that used to sell them have stopped for fear of "trouble" from animal-lovers?

The only reason a rabbit's foot came to have a lucky reputation is because back in the day when you bought your meat in still near-full animal form, it was very difficult to tell the difference between skinned cat and skinned rabbit. Unless the rabbit's feet were still attached. People of course preferred rabbit because cat (and most carnivore meat) tends to be stringy and tough.
Rabbit is one my major guides, for me personally, finding part of a dead rabbit would be a contrary indicator, not a positive one.

That's interesting. So your dog gave it to you and it was perfectly cut? Sounds like someone was either hunting or trapping rabbits and that was the unlucky one.

That was my thoughts if was real, but I was hoping it was fake....

Absolutely. If it's real, that's just a wee bit grotesque when you think of it. Poor bunny wabbit:uhhuhuh:

Clearly, that rabbit was unlucky.
It could be that Rabbit Spirit gave the severed foot to you so that you could honour the death of the rabbit.
Or to alert you to someone trapping or snaring rabbits, if it's an area where that shouldn't be happening.
Or to ask that you bring some rabbit food or hay on your next dog walk to help the balance.
Or as a rememberance or a connection-maker with the Spirit of Rabbit (or the wild in general).

Thank you, there was quite a lot of information in those links.
The animal-speak version tells of the rabbit as a fear-caller. Rabbit would call out his fear so his fear would happen... look what happened to it. It may be a reminder that by worrying I may attract what it is I am worrying about.
I don't think there are trappers where I take walks... lots of coyotes have been sighted though.
I'm really grateful for all your input!

If it is a real rabbit's foot I suggest you should wash your hands really well and bury it. Honestly it could carry diseases and might make you and your doggy sick

That is a good point as well. I assume it hasn't been properly sanitized or preserved, so diseases could still be on it. Plus, if you don't know what really killed the rabbit, you don't know what it died from. Perhaps it was sick and therefore easily caught in a trap or by a predator? I don't know. Just be careful!

I don't believe in coincidence,
And therein lies the problem.
A lot of things are purely coincidental, whether you believe so or not.

All things are synchronistic , once you go beyond
the limiting boundaries of Newtonian physics , and
Aristotleian logic...both dead ends , in higher dimensions...

Besides, coincidences are totally boring. :weirdsmil

Why does anybody believe a rabbit's foot is lucky? It certainly wasn't lucky for the rabbit.

Hey Fireyone
Finding that rabbit's foot could have meant different things for different people.
Personally, i believe in paying attention to the world around you - and usings signs and symbols to help guide you - the same signs and symbols that help shape and guide me may not mean the same thing to the person walking beside me.
I believe you have just figured out what it means to your path specifically!

I haven't finished watching the video yet, but, very cool so far, I really like RAW.

So true, I think it's, mainly, just superstition (I wouldn't be surprised if an angry dead bunny came looking for revenge!).

That kid also had a Rabbit's foot, until the were-rabbit came looking for revenge!.
