I use them on my Christmas site too! Every page changes your cursor to match the theme of the page. :)
Right now, my 'puter cursor is the witch's hat. hehehe

Comet is spyware. I strongly recommend avoiding it! For more information, check DoxDesk (http://and.doxdesk.com/parasite/CometCursor.html).

I've been using it for years and never had any problems. I'll check out the article anyway, but I'll continue to use it. :) :D

I found this awhile ago and they also have browser skins. I've had an autum leaf and fall leaves on my browser for a while. I've had a belly dancer, a magick wand and they also have the Norse gods and goddesses!
Time to change mine!
Whoops, just noticed something.....PB, could you explain SpyWare for those of us who are not quite so internet literate? I've never heard of this before.

**Smiles** I was beginning to wonder if anyone had actually seen my post. ;)
Spyware is software that spies on you - in this case, Comet Cursor spies on your browsing habits and reports them to Comet Systems, Inc. Comet Systems does Gods-know-what with the data. . . and in fact, that's part of the problem. They don't tell you up front that they're going to track your surfing habits, much less what they're going to do with the information they gather from you.
Comet uses a unique identifier to track browsing history. So it not only has general data on all its users' browsing history, but it has data on your browsing history in particular, from the moment you install it.
In addition to the link I provided above, you can find a little more information here (http://gingerbug.diaryland.com/warning.html).

Thanks, PB......can't look into it right now but I will later.
Also: when I clicked on the Comet link in the first post - my browser opened 40 error windows and would not close or stop. I had to shut down my comp and was scared to death that it had been fried! No idea what caused this.
Important! I am not exaggerating. I think the actual number of windows was 42. My comp has never done that before.

Do you already have the cursor installed?

*nods* I installed the cursor...not realizing the Comet crap came with it. But when I noticed the additional bar on the browser I took the whole thing off.

So - are there no rules against this type of thing? Do we know if anyone has confronted Comet and asked them why they track info and what they do with it?
I've been using it for most of the past year and don't have any identifiable problems.

Think of it this way Freyja.....it's kind of like having some stranger follow you around all day long, recording what you're doing, where you're going, who you see. And then just filing that information somewhere without ever telling you what they do with it.
What business is it of theirs what webpages you visit?

Comet denies tracking browsing history, or anything else other than what cursors you've actually installed.
**Shrugs** Whether or not you choose to take Comet's word on it is up to you. ;) I don't.

Exactly. It raises the question that if they can do it, might there be others? And a whole other list of things, like who are they and who they're affiliated with, and why?
I have enough on my mind right now.....*shuts down runaway thinking mode*

Alrighty, like I said above, I've used Comet for years and haven't had any troubles. Yes, it too put the extra toolbar on my IE, but you don't have to use it--just go to "view---toolbars---comet" and un-check it.
I also use Hotbar which scans the page you are on and offers other suggestions for you. I don't necessarily use that feature either, I just like the fact that I can liven up the toolbars from that awful, boring grey. (Ironic since I voted for GREY for this site! LOL)
I stand by them. Being a tech geek myself, I know that there are thousands upon thousands of 'spyware' and 'adware' sites out there. But I happen to like Comet. If they really want to know what I am doing on the net, they will be bored out of their minds! To me, it's like the Nielson Ratings for TV.
I use a tracking service on my websites to find out where people are coming from, what search words they used to get there, etc. Essentially, it's the same thing to me. I need to know what people are looking for to tailor the site to my 'audience'.
I personally wouldn't worry too much about Comet. It's a free service and sometimes for those, they compensate by trying to get sponsers to help out. They need to know what kind of folks they are dealing with.
I will leave you with this. I used to go ballistic when I first found out about 'spyware'. I felt that I didn't need Big Brother watching me. However, as I've learned my way around the net, I know that some companies "use this power for evil instead of for good." I like Comet. I don't think they are some evil enterprise. You have to keep this in mind as well, while some theories may be true about the spyware thingy, some may not be. It's like the Kennedy assassination--for every one theory of who really killed the man, there are 100 others that can contradict them. Some companies get lumped into a term that has so many levels to it that I feel it unfairly judges all of them equally.
This is all my opinion and take it however you want. This is all I'll say about it. I'll continue to use it on my computer and on my website. Remember too, if you don't like it, it's very easy to remove off the 'puter.
