I read something about a tradition of breaking your pentacle when you move to a new house in "The wicca handbook". I am moving soon, but this is the only time I have encountered that tidbit of information. Does anyone know anymore about it? Also anymore moving "things"? Like never taking your old broom, does that include your ritual broom or just household?

I think it just means your besom, since that can harbour energies from your old home and bring them to the new.

For what it's worth though, I already have my besom packed to take to the new house - I'd *like* to take some of the energy and memories from here over.

I never heard the pentacle thing though. I suppose it's the same sort of idea, but you wouldn't catch me breaking a pentacle (even if I could, it's pretty heavy) :)

*smiles* The books I've seen that in say the opposite. That you can take your besom with you as that's easily cleansed and recharged.

But I make it a point now to not take an old broom with me to a new house when I move. *shrugs* Mostly that's because the broom is already worn and needs to be replaced. If it's a brand new broom I don't see a problem with it.

Never heard the thing about the pentacle though.

Could this, perhaps, be another case of an author making up something for their own use, then trying to pass it off as "traditional"?

Frankly, seems silly to me. Take a perfectly good Magical tool -- one that's been soaking up energy for years -- and break it, just because you're moving? Why should I start from scratch with charging a new one? Sounds like a joke a shopkeeper might make, more than anything.

I wouldnt destroy any of my tools and certainly wouldnt destroy them just because its traditional...

Oh, I've heard that many times from my original teacher and some others around here. If I'm the only one who has heard it besides Greta, you might look it up in one of the Frost's books. That's the only reason I can think of that people around here would be doing it and not anywhere else.

I haven't moved since I got this pentacle but if I do, I probably will smash this pentacle and bury at the new house. Then buy a new one. Moving is a great time to get a fresh start in many areas of your life.

Hey, whether or not it's "traditional" or not shouldn't matter all that much. Do what feels right. If you feel you're bringing negative energies with you (whether you're moving or just living your life), then something SHOULD change. If breaking or leaving something behind is symbolic of leaving the past behind, then great! Other than that, do what feels best to you.

I only know of two traditions connected with moving.

1. If you own a cat, bring it into the house facing backwards (the cat backwards) then put its forepaws in the ashes in the fireplace. This is to insure that it won't run away.

2. When leaving an old home, leave salt and a loaf of bread on the table. (Hebrew)

ya know, that got me thinking...a few months after i moved the first time i lost my first pentacle, then when things started getting bad at home and i was thinking of moving i lost my second...and then right before i acctually did move i got this one and still have it...wonder if it's kinda the same idea

I agree with Psyche Ague on this one - do what feels right. I remember at one time things for me just weren't going the way I thought they should so I figured I needed to make some changes. Because I couldn't figure out exactly what to change I changed simple stuff. (Don't laugh) Like which foot I put a sock on first, how I put on my make up, and going out the back door instead of the front. Wasn't long things got back on track.

So if you have negativity you need to leave behing break the broom and leave the pentacle! (HA HA HA) But if there is a lot of postive energies bring them with you!

Good Luck Greta!:heartthro :heartthro ((((Greta))))
And again, don't lift them boxes!

Thank you everyone for your answers and taking the time to post them.

Mith, I don't have access to any of the Frost's work at this time, can you tell me more about this? Is there a ceremony or anything? My pentacle is a heavy silver disk, would I just bury it? At the new house or the old?
You know, it's funny, I do seem to have a way of bringing all my old problems with me........maybe this is just the thing. I am certainly interested in knowing more.

Oh, and one more thing,OT just what the heck IS a steely dan??

You mean Steely Dan the band?

I don't know much about the Frost's but the Church and School of Wicca is located in this state and many Witches here have been heavily influenced by thier teachings. That's why I thought it might be something of theirs since I was the only one who had heard it from other people.

If you do bring your problems with you, I would break the pentacle before you leave and bury it at your old house. The earth will absorb any negative energy tied to that pentacle and buy yourself a new one to be charged and blessed with your fresh start. I don't think there needs to be a formal ceremony, just make sure you are visualizing all of your old problems being left behind. :)

I say send it back to the earth where it feels right to you.

Be it a lake, buried in your old(or new) back yard, whatever. And as far as ritual, just a simple thanks or meditation should do fine.

I never heard of either of those.... though I guess I can understand why one would do it...

Zeph, i have never ever heard anything about having to break a pentacle to move house, i am not a Wiccan but i don't think breaking your Pentacle will provide you with any more good luck with you moving to a new house, what you have to think is that while you have been wearing your pentacle, all your physical energy from your body has been channeling into that pentacle, even greater if you have been doing ceremonies, all i can say is that if you break your pentacle then the energy that has been gathered within it will be displaced, i wouldn't break it hun if i was you to be honest. When you get to your new home, just ask for blessings to protect your new home and use the energy that has built up in your current pentacle as part of the blessing.

I hope i was able to help.

I think the reason for the broom, (both of them) is to make sure you are making a new start. All the dirt from your brooms has been picked up in your current home, and you dont want it to follow you. All the things that your brooms have swept away leave something behind. As far as the pentical thing, I have been tols to break my wheel of the year before moving, and many of those have a penticle in them.... maybee thats what they ment? You do that to make sure you dont have the same habbits, (bad) follow you to your new home.

You're supposed to have a new besom each year at Samhain anyway...so I'd leave it behind and definitely the household broom is left behind. Rick was not a happy camper when I had him throw away a practically brand new broom when he moved in here.

Also--first things through the door are the main inhabitants of the house. They should have salt, bread and wine. salt for protection--that container is never opened. bread to never hunger and wine/juice to never thirst.

That's the traditions at my house, anyway.

JMO and YMMV,

Elise

I realize this is kind of late, but oh well.
As for the pentacle thing, the only reference I have ever heard of to breaking the pentacle is in the 161 Laws: "72. Let the pentacles be of wax so that they may be broken at once or melted." And since that is from the days of the wytch cult of olde, I don't really think it's all that applicable to Wicca today. ;)

Breaking my Pentacle? Notta chance. We've been best friends for two years in september. Never been off my body. I've lived in three states in that time. The broom thing, yea, I've heard that one. Ya don't want to bring the energy from the old house to the new. Leave the broom with the house. If there's one in the house you move into, it has to be gotten rid of and the energy neutralized. Buy a new one for the new house. That's what I've been told from different people, and it sounds right to me.
