View Full Version : Weekly Divination ~ Close enough?

When does close enough matter? and when does the rule "close only applies in horseshoes" play in?
I have seen a number of times when a "teacher" is teaching how to do divination - yet the teacher has no ability to calculate the real time of say equinox. They apply the "well it is the 21st" rule, and like a dead clock will be right sometimes, but not really useful other times.
Or a person reads something and says, well hmm I had no idea, I always just do it this way ...
Does it really matter that much how accurate? or is ball park close enough?
And does your answer change when the person is reading for you or teaching you?

I think I wasn't quite understanding the question & what you were getting at. :) I'm a little vague this morning. ;)
With teaching a divination method... sometimes all you have is "close enough". You can learn all the book meanings you want, but there is always intuition to be dealt with.. and sometimes that intuition doesn't match up with the books. So, does that qualify as "close enough"?

sure that counts
others would be divination done on solstice
how close to solstice is close enough? many people do not do the math and have it as the wrong day altogether for their time zone
that ok? close enough?
many people do divination with candles, but do not study colors -- that ok? close enough? all in intent?
etc. etc.
Many teachers, come forward to teach, and have read a book, have some understanding is that close enough?
that kinda thing...
fyi: interestingly it is a common topic that is avoided, in many energy and pagan circles lol

I think if I were to specifically do a divination on a Solstice, that I'd calculate the time. However I have done rituals with no divination where I used the "close enough" idea. If the gods know that I'm trying to honor them properly, that's what counts. ;)
Same with candles & colors, if I had the correct color on hand, I'd use it. If it was an emergency and I didn't, I'd be ok with close enough.
And yeah. I feel comfortable teaching tarot because I've studied it and worked with it for so many years... but I would NOT feel comfortable teaching runes simply because I've picked up a few books. Maybe lead a study group... but not TEACH. :)

I approach divination more like the saying about Death and Taxes than the saying to do with horseshoes and hand grenades. :)
Divination isn't an exact science, and in some readings "close enough" is all you're going to get. Black and white answers aren't that common...there are always shades of gray, and gray leaves a lot of room for individual interpretation.
It's a tricky subject to teach, because how do you teach intuition and insight? ;)
If something requires a specific day or a specific hour (a specific moon, etc.) I would say that if that is what it calls for, that is what you should do, and if you do it at a different time than what is called for, your results may not be what you were actually looking for.
I'm not a big stickler for rules... but if you are going to have rules around a spell or specific type of working you are doing, then you should follow them or risk getting results that aren't necessarily true or correct.
I hope that makes sense. :)

Am I reading this wrong, or is this topic geared more towards magickal timing and ritual than it is to divination?
To answer the close enough question though, and the direct question how accurate must you be, here is my take.
Regarding tarot cards and other forms of divination: They have multiple meanings to begin with, if you can pinpoint the energy and use your intuition to determine what you are being told, I wouldn't say 100% accuracy is needed, but being on the right track and being able to say "This card means this for your particular situation" and being RIGHT about it, is all that's needed.
Reagrding future predictions: Obviously 100% accuracy is never going to happen, but if you feel out the energies and you say something like "Wow, you're going to give that poor womanizer a run for his money and it may help you in winning over the job . . ." and the next day the client has the interview and finds the womanizer interviewer is frazzled, his pen doesn't work and there's no really good room to hold the interview in, I'd say the previous statement is pretty accurate. Sometimes what we get about the future doesn't play out exactly as foretold, and so being "close enough" often applies. Now if all the reader said was something like, "You'll have the interview and it will go well." then I'd say they were definitely not close enough!
Regarding teaching metaphysics: I think teachers need to be aware that you don't need to calculate the solstice or equinox, but being smarter than the average bear, it helps students to know they can just go look it up if they need to know the exact timing, and that yes in those cases, timing is everything. For other topics such as teaching tarot, it's often better to give a student a starting point and let them brainstorming and associations of their own, you don't have to teach everything, part of this path is that of discovery.
