I'm going to start one soon, but I don't have one yet...I have a crapload of seeds, most of which will do fine directly sowed, I just need some gloves, potting soil for the seedlings of the others, and a small shovel. Most of them are flowers; morning glories, lavender, foxgloves (my fave!) and I'm going to attempt to grow lemon verbena though the instructions make them seem delicate.

MM Everyone!

I am so excited, I have just started an herb garden containing Thyme, Sage, Comfrey, Basil, Oregano, Fennel, Parsley and Chives and also a flower garden containing moonflowers, impatiens, geraniums and some others. Hope I develop a green thumb, I have a terrible track record.

I'm doing the first garden I've had in 13 years! I'm very jazzed. It will be my kids first garden.

I probably should have picked the "all of the above" instead of just vegetable up there. I've had a vegetable garden for about 3 years. Last year I started to mmix in my own herbs and some flowers. Because I share a home with my Dad and his wife, I have a very small space out in the back yard, so this year I bought some strawberry pots and in addition to my plot, I've going to try container gardening this year. My son loves have a vegetable garden. He likes to pick the fruits of his labor (well mainly mine). During the summer he likes swimming in the pool instead of helping me! Oh well.

My Dad's garden is amazing. It's all perinneals (sp??) and annuals. He has a special affection for roses, and we have a little weeping cherry tree in the front lawn. When I was little my Dad was a landscaper, so he has a great eye for these things. Our neighbors tease him every year about how hard they have to work cause he makes them all look bad. :)

I love my garden! I have a vegetable garden (when I can keep the sheep out of it), my flower garden is FULL of roses (when I can keep the sheep out of it) and this year for the first time I have put in daffodils and freesias (hopefully I'll keep the sheep out) LOL I think I have a sheep problem, they are worse than the snails!!! I woke up one morning and there were about 30 of them having a great munch on my hard work :(

Oh, I have a few fruit trees too :)

I am about to plant my herb garden outside. My husband just tilled it for me today. I have a seperate tulip garden and then another bed with flowers. If I do do veges this year, I am going to get those half whiskey barrels and fill them with dirt and just plant a couple of onions, bell peppers, and 1 tomato. My sister and I had a huge vege garden one year and it overpowered us both. We neither one had enough time for it. So now it's simplicity all the way.:)

Oh bummer! I just planted some shasta daisies and purple coneflowers, and it just hit me the other day that I *really* hope our resident bunny doesn't munch them all! I also have a dogwood tree that I planted last year, and I noticed the deer have eaten a few of the tiny branches off, but they haven't seemed to harm the tree so that's good. Afterall, they must eat something during our harsh winters! (Of course we only have a zillion other trees on our property for them to choose from!!!) LOL! :)

My husband plants a huge vegetable garden, but I stick to flowers and trees.

I don't have any garden at the moment, but my mom is learning about herb gardens, so hopefully, before this summer is over, we will be ready for the next season.

Hi Moonmorgan!

Where are you in Ontario? I'm in Ottawa. Nice to see a fellow Ontarian! Good Luck with the future garden!

Speaking of gardens, does anyone know if it's too late to start flowers? I've got morning glories, lavender and foxgloves, and I'll be picking up potting soil this weekend.

I have an all of the above garden. I love everything so I plant a little of everything. All of mine so far are in containers. Maybe next year we will get round to having beds too.

Also, I am still planting a few bits. Check the back of the seed packets to decide when things should be planted.

Check the individual flowers to see when the best time to plant is. But, for the most part, you should be ok ;)

I am a garden nut.....

Rosemary is a very nice looking herb that is very fregrant, grows real fast.

Jazzmine, just a suggestion, according to companion planting (according to Almenac, planting with the phases of the moon)tomatoes do not like to be in close with onions. Tomatoes grow pretty big, I am not sure you would be happy with a green pepper in there as they need lots of sun to bear fruit and the tomatoe will probably shade it. I have too similar barrells with one tomatoe in each....maybe some marigolds with you tomatoes as they love and compliment each other.

I just learned this, this yr. let me know how it works if you plant them together. I am a master tomatoe grower, I have 2 plants close to onions to see if it makes a difference.

I is tooooo late for lavender seeds unless you are planting them in a pot and are bringing it inside. Check on the Foxglove too, I think it is too late for them.

It is so nice to see everyone trying out their green thumbs, you will be pleased as it gives great pleausre. To me anyways. Great gardening to alllll.

Thank you for the advice. But I think I will have to wait until next year to try it out. Oh, also, I was thinking of putting the bell peppers and the onions in one pot and the tomatoes in the other. What do ya think about that? I don't have enough funds for the barrels this year.

I couldn't vote....none of the options were quite correct for me!

This year is the first year that I've planted anything, so I kept it to flowers on the patio in a couple small containers. (I'm an apartment dweller) I wanted to be sure I didn't have a black thumb! LOL

When I was in a previous relationship, every plant I tried to grow and nuture, ended up turning black and dying.

Now though, all my plants seem to be green and healthy and growing like mad! ....go figure!

I hope to have a real garden eventually....hopefully in the next 5 years (when I hope to have my home built by).

I had the same thing happen to me. When I was living in my last home I couldn't get anything to grow at all. It would all die. Must have been to mood of the house. Now in my new home nothing dies. I have had to repot everything 2 times last year because it was growing like crazy. And my plants outside are doing great also. Maybe the old relationships and last homes plut out some bad energy. What do you think?

I have the all of the above gardens also. I live in Florida, so I am a year-round gardener. It's sort of tricky though because you don't always know when to plant certain things. It's not like I have spring thaw to clue me in.So, this year-my first for vegetables here in the south- well, lets just say it has been a real learning experience. I think I have decided to not try & harvest much(like it's really an option), and allow nature to have this first year as a gift.
A brighter note- my roses, hydrangea, ginger & canna lillies are spectacular! My thumb is still green yeh!!!!
peace to all

Well, I don't really fit into any of those categories. I live in a small apartment with no patio that until recently was full to the TOP with houseplants. I've finally gotten rid of alot of the 'rescued' houseplants and have room for some herbs. Yessssssssss! Now if I can fill the empty spots with more herbs before more rescue-ees come in! lol

June 17th, 2001, 11:05 AM
Because we have been so draught- stricken here, I have tried to not bring in a bunch of new plants this season, but it seems that rescuees keep showing up. Of course, I'm blessed to have a large yard, and most "house plants" do quite well in the shade provided by the several big oaks on the premises.
Oh well, what the heck. I love them all & they give back in lots of ways,, so I'll leave the vacancy sign in the front yard.

Well, bought a new property 2 years ago, it really is a gorgeous site. I plan on planting as much as I can with herbs, edibles(which includes veggies, fruit trees, brambles etc.), plants that are fragrant, and I can't resist flowers that are "blue". Everyone says my gardens are huge and must be a lot of work. They are, but it's a labour of love. People say I've got a lot accomplished so far, but I won't be happy until all but a scrap of the grass is turned into garden.

I try not to grow anything in my house or outside...I tend to kill anything that is brought into the house. Good thing my family speaks up every once in awhile...they get fed all the time because I actually think about them! I just don't have a green thumb in any approximation!

I love to garden and I will try anything.. I mostly garden with herbs but I have several other gardens too.. I have flowers, trees, herbs, veggies.. I use to live in Florida where it seemed easier but I dealt with more disease and fungus than here in New Mexico.. Here, I got to make sure everything doesn't thirst to death, including me..

My mother and I have a wonderful large flower garden. Soon I'm going to be starting my own herb garden though. Been scanning my yard for the best spot for one.

Twilight Garden

2 in the front yard: 1 annuals & 1 fragrant. So I can regularly change the look and when your walking in it smells delightful.

2 in the back yard: 1 flowering, mostly perrennials & 1 herb. The flowers for the peace of mind and relaxation. The herbs speak for themselves. (Plus a bit of landscaping I did around the sacred space.)

I chose all of the above even though I don't really do veggies. I eat enough of them, I should.

Yeah, they grow like weeds! Keep them in separate pots to keep them from taking over your entire garden.

Basil is very easy to grow, also. And it comes in a lot of different varieties, flavors and even colors. And you can collect the seeds for next year, if you keep the different types separated so they don't cross pollinate. What herbs to you like to cook with? Grow the ones you use most. I'd keep two separate beds, one for annuals (and the occasional biennial) and one for perennials. That way the perennials can grow undisturbed for several years while the annuals get yanked every year.

My list:

Basil (at least three different kinds)
Rosemary
Catnip
Wood sorrel (actually this grows wild in my lawn)
Marigolds (keeps nematodes out of your garden)
Parsley
Thyme (regular and lemon thyme)
Sage (maybe pineapple sage too if you like it)
Tarragon
Mints (lots of different flavors available)
Lemon balm (rub it on your skin for natural bug repellant)
Oregano
Chives (regular and garlic chives)

Then look for herbs which fit your other interests. Think about what you want your garden to look like: there are many herbs which are quite ornamental. And some flowers are edible, like violets, roses, nasturtiums, lavender, and calendula.

During this winter, get some seed catalogs (you can find ads for them in gardening magazines). There are just so many neat things to grow, you may not want to leave any space for grass!

You poor dear! What were you using to put flavor in? Salt and sugar?

So what foods do you like? Italian? You'll need oregano, basil, marjoram, garlic, maybe rosemary if you like it (it's not to my taste -- too much like biting into a pine tree). Mexican? Peppers, cilantro, garlic. Oriental? Ginger, garlic, and hit the specialty catalogs for some of the more unusual herbs. Basic American? Thyme, sage, parsley, oregano, dill, garlic, maybe caraway.

:D My Mama could put a broomstick in the ground and make it grow. Now I have beautiful gardens and when I'm in them I talk to Mom and I think I connect. We have gorgeous weather still down here (if you don't count the drought). A garden,no matter how big or small is good for the soul. Start ordering seed catalogs now and dream of Spring!:elf:

Namaste all,

i dont have a garden currently. Though the back yard of the appartment house i live in has had a garden. But the neighbors kids, who are relatives to the freemazon-landlord of ours (yuck)
anyway, they constantly kept on destroying all that we planted.

we planted lavender, they ripped it out. we planted sage, they ripped it out. we called the police every time. after having invested some 100 $ into plants and lots of work into making the beds planable... just for the nasty way of "amusement" of our neighbours... we gave up.

But having had that planting and making plantable exyperience, one idea fpor you

Try to plant, weed out etc, according to the moon. It works, and is more fun/less work then.

Blessings and again, green thumbs up
