View Full Version : Your Name...

Grey_Bear
November 5th, 2002, 11:27 PM
I'm not sure if this has been asked here before, but I was curiouse as to how everyone here chose their MW name? Is there a story behind it?
I'll start with mine....
In 1996-97 (fire season) , I was working on Coville Indian Reservation in N. Central Washington as a water tank driver...I was working the night shift and sleeping days at the fire camp when I was bit by a young bear cub. My encounter with the bear cub and it's mother earned me the name Grey Bear by my fellow workers who were tribal members.

So how did you all chose your names?:)

p.s. the Grey in Grey Bear is in relation to my grey hair and beard:p

Radocs

Been asked many a time before, but that's okay.

Radocs is "Dracos" with the letters mixed around.

Kaylara
November 5th, 2002, 11:35 PM
Kaylara is a screwed up version of K'ylar from Anne McCaffery's Dragon Riders of Pern books that I made up when I was like 12. I read somewhere that the ' meant that there was a vowel taken out there, so I guess I just tossed in some a's and that was how I got my present day pagan name... Been using it for years on the internet and IRL.

Demeter
November 5th, 2002, 11:40 PM
Kaylara, I think there was a character named Kylara in Pern books (or something close to that, at any rate). Only the male dragon riders shortened their names when they became dragon riders (Lytol to L'tol, for example). Women kept their names the long way.

My screen name is the circle name I used when I was a dedicant; Demeter was one of my favorite goddesses and I am heavily into gardening and such. I really wanted to use my current circle name, Ishtar, but discovered that someone had already taken it (and then used it to make ONE post - waste of a good name, I say!).

Flare- A solar flare

hehe.. I don't like the way it was spelled though. 'twas also the name of an RPG character I used to use way back when too....

Kaylara

Yeah... I thought it was something like that... Like I said... I was like 12 when I came up with the name...

Siarlas
November 6th, 2002, 12:19 AM
My nick is one I've used for anything I do on the net. I came up with it one day when I decided to make a website. Then after all this time of thinking that I have my own unique nick, I find that in an RPG or something somewhere, it's the name of a place/town!
UGH!

edit - Forgot to mention that 'Kaya' is the shortened version of the one I originally came up with. 'Kayalana'

AradiaSupernova
November 6th, 2002, 12:21 AM
hm.

Aradia: Italian Goddess of the Witches

Supernova: Expolded star.

My full magick name used to be Aradia Persephone Supernova. I've since changed it, but it held as how I was looking for a teacher to guide me (the goddess Aradia), and ppl have described me as being dangerous yet beautiful (Supernova *can you tell I had a facination with stars when I was younger?*) I didn't put Persephone in my screen name cuz I didn't think it would fit. lol :) But I had that in there as..I see Persephone as a goddess that helps overcome fear. At that point, and still, I need that. So there is that story :) hehe

Ryhla
November 6th, 2002, 12:42 AM
I on occasion do RPG. Anyway, the name Ryhla is a charater name of mine. I've also written a short story a few years ago using this charater and placed it online on a site that has since disappeared. But since then I've used the charater name as a screen name in just about any place that asks for a screen name.

who had a little adventure with a woman named Cerridwen...

Earthsprite
November 6th, 2002, 01:27 AM
Special me. My name 'Earthsprite'. Well... I like Earth.....and 'sprite' gives me a rather whimsical appearance (at least to me :P).

Actually, I have another name -- you can see it in my signature -- that is just the name of an age from Myst III: Exile. I identified with it alot because the whole thing is a gigantic, inwardly-growing tree with plants and animals growing inside of it. It's its own rain forest! It even has all of the forest layers! (Well, I figured since there are four levels to walk on.) Does anybody know those four layers? There's the Emergent Layer, Canopy, Understory, and Forest Floor. And in the age there's the bird nest area, deadwood ridge, swing vines, and the swamp. And it's so beautiful! I urge you all to search for ' "Edanna" screenshots'.

Mythrel
November 6th, 2002, 06:13 AM
as a few of you, I played RPG's growing up...one of my favorite characters was Mythrel...which was a different way of spelling mithril...as time went by, I began playing Everquest...(year and half of my life wasted) anyway, I used Mythrel as a character name there and later when I got a last name took Falconhand.

Falconhand was a name that a couple of friends of mine took and it was a symbol of friendship and seemed to fit due to the falcon head tattoo on my shoulder.

So the full name is Mythrel Falconhand.

Old, I am.......Witch, I am............:D

Valnorran
November 6th, 2002, 10:12 AM
A friend of mine somehow got his hands on the zodiac for the Tuatha de Dennan. One of the results of this zodiac system is that it gives you a spirit stone, animal, wood, and name. While he was running me through it, the word "pathfinder" kept running through my mind. Well, the results were that my stone is lodestone, my animal is the timber wolf, my wood is ash, and my name is Valnorran which means (yep, you guessed it) pathfinder.

Fear-farsain
November 6th, 2002, 02:44 PM
Its gaelic for 'rambler'. I have hopes of learning this language when I get more time and concentration, and it seemed somewhat apt for what I do. :) I also use it in various RPGs.

Djiril
November 6th, 2002, 03:28 PM
I got mine from Gordon Bok's music/story album "Seal Djiril's Hymn". I really like that album, though most people either haven't heard of it or find it too strange (like me).;)

Rubi Waters
November 6th, 2002, 10:25 PM
nothing profound here.......Ruby is my birthstone and I love red. I love anything to do with water. So Rubi Waters was born. :)

Psyche Ague
November 6th, 2002, 10:45 PM
I've always loved the story of Psyche and Cupid. Ever since I first used Psyche as a chat name, I've been madly in love with it. It also means "soul" or "butterfly" in Greek. Ague means "a fever accompanied by chills or trembling." The combination of "soul" and "feverish trembling" conjures really beautiful, strange thoughts in my mind and the two together just seem perfect for me.

Pippin
November 6th, 2002, 10:54 PM
No big mystery here. Pippin is a nickname for Philip.

AmbivalentMirage
November 6th, 2002, 11:15 PM
Mine came from two songs I like.

Ambivalent: "That Particular Time" by Alanis Morrisette "...and I kept on ignoring the ambivalence you felt."

Mirage: "Saturate Me" by Mandy Moore "...the desert I wander lacks it's mirage."

Also, I'm told I am very elusive and enigmatic and tend to be indecisive. Hence, an ambivalent mirage! ;)

Dellit Tandannon
November 7th, 2002, 02:44 PM

punkymister
November 7th, 2002, 03:14 PM
I liked the name Punky Brewster(I'm sure most know her) , but wanted to give it my own spin, thus I'm Punky Mister.

StormChaser
November 8th, 2002, 03:10 PM
Storm: For several reasons
1)The name of one of my favorite characters from a book.. actually the only "romance" book I've ever read. Irish and Welsh with quite a firey tongue and tempestous personality.. falls in love with the guy from the other side of the war.. the Scot shes supposed to hate.. hehe.. But mostly it was her temper

2) From StormDancer another name.. most of my friends find this easy to understand.. In the blizzard of 96 i went out for a walk at 3am 3miles into the town next over to dance on the steps of the Hyatt Hotel in the snow
Several times.. actually.. anytime it's storming outside you can usually find me dancing in the rain.. getting soaked.. stomping in puddles.. fallin' on my butt.

3) Storm as in troubles..sadness.. with chaser because I am the one who runs around and picks up the peices.. trys to solve everyone elses issues hehe.. Usually finding my own way into my own messes.. getting stuck in my own emotional twisters.. But I always leave with some great footage hehe.

Silver_Alhena
November 11th, 2002, 04:23 PM
Alhena is the name of a star in Gemini, ans as a duplicitious twin myself, I took it as part of my name. :)
Hence, "silver star."

Konstantine
November 11th, 2002, 10:27 PM
My friend got me hooked on Something Corporate so I fell totally in love with their song "Konstantine." It's nine minutes long and I just play it over and over ... :)

Saphra
November 12th, 2002, 02:33 AM
I was in an RPG and needed a character for it, so I asked my aunt to draw me one, and while she was drawing it, the name that the character spoke, was Saphra, and the last name for this caracter is D'Angelo, I took it from a friend, who's name was Angelo, and added a D' to it pronounced DeAngelo..... thought that that looked weird, so I shortened it..... My witch name and my name for everything else is Medea, she was a princess that Jason of the Argonots (misspelled, please forgive me) fell in love with and she was also a famed Witch, so the name given to her in most stories is Medea, Witch Princess ( I read a book about her when I was like 12 or so, and loved the name), I thought it fit, I am a witch, and I should be treated like a Princess......

Jax
November 12th, 2002, 04:33 AM
is short for.........Jacqueline! (Which just happens to be my real name!) Plain and simple!:o
But, my net name, WillowMoon, is my Celtic Birthday! (the Celtic Tree months and it fell on a full moon in the month of Willow way back in 1993 when I first signed up for an email address! Not that interesting really!LOL!!!):D

FaerySong
November 12th, 2002, 10:09 AM
Well I really love the fae folk, hence it's "Faery", and "FaerySong12" is my AIM s/n the 12 coming from the fact that I have a perfect twelve shaped out of freckles on my forhead. And I was going out of my "goth" and horribly depressed state and I needed a new s/n so I picked that.
The song comes from the fact that I play the flute, which always has the impression to be of being very fae, cause it's really delicate looking, and that I sing very purely and I have a high pitch and I write poetry and all that lovely junk that will take up alot of explanation...but yeah =D

Gor
November 12th, 2002, 10:30 AM
Gor:
Plainly and simply, it's short for Gordon. I'm originally from England [moved to Oklahoma in Aug. 2001] and I have Scottish roots, hence the "Scottish" name.. Well, Gordon is Anglo-Saxon and means "From the triangular hill" or similar.

I first used the shortened version back in the days of BBS's [before this huge internet thing!]. Steve [Timerider] is credited as the first person to call me "Gor".

This often brings up confusion these days... When the internet really took off, I had a lot of people start IM-ing me asking if I was a "Gorean" ...
I was like "Am I a what?"
Little did I know that there was a huge phenomenon out there called "Gor"... Oh well... I was there first.. [I think!]

Taliesin:
(Strictly "Taliesin^" with the ^)
Was my first registered DALnet nickname on IRC. I used to frequent and spend a LOT of time as an OP and SOP in a channel called #Witchery on DALnet. I had some fun times there.

Anyway,
There's a lot more names people use to call me... But most of them aren't repeatable here!!!

Chiiiiill! :)
Gor.

I got mine from Anne Rice's "The Witching Hour".

Phoenix Blue
November 12th, 2002, 02:54 PM
Phoenix is my spirit animal. . . and my phoenix, in particular, is blue. Therefore, Phoenix Blue. **Grins** Mostly because it sounds more exotic than Blue Phoenix.
