all right, i've gotten the 4 canonical Gospels corresponded to the 4 Elements like this:

Matthew=water
Mark=fire
Luke=earth
John=air

from the animals they're iconographically associated with (human, lion, bull, and eagle, respectively), and also, i think, James Joyce's Finnegan's Wake (via Robert Anton Wilson; see the Appendices of the Illuminatus! trilogy if you're so inclined), but i'm trying to make more direct connections between the Gospels and the Elements. Here's what i have so far:

Mark/fire: this book is very action-oriented
Luke/earth: a lot about the humble downtrodden in society, including women
John/air: seems intellectual, long passages where Jesus is just talking

any other related thoughts?

While Mark as Fire and John as Air work well for me, the other two seem like they'd work better switched.

Matthew focuses on history, which fits Earth well for me. Also, he was a tax collector and talks a lot about money, which fits the Pentacle in Tarot, which is the Earth suit.

Luke is more emotional, like Cups in Tarot, which are the element for Water.
