I dont know about numbing, but cold water will take the heat out,
and then put on aloe vera!

Run cold water from the tap......then there's a good medicine called Foille (I think) you can get over the counter...........or good ole Aloe Vera..break off a leaf and put the gel on the burn..........That is, of course, supposing you haven't burned the skin right off your hand.........Then check out our forum the Green Room...all sorts of good remedies there........and Welcome......

Just holding it in cool water (not Ice water) should help. Aloe, and..try this on for size. Bleach! Just pour some bleach over the effected area. It sounds odd..but it really does help, for a little while. Of course, you can't really SOAK your hand for a long period of time in bleach, however, it's reccomended just to pour it over it. It's one of those "family remedies" that I heard.

I don't know why it works, but it does.

I feel for you FaerySong. I did something similar last year. Seeing as I got fed up with my kettle, I now boil my water in a pot on the stove. Well, this one time I was actually holding my cup as I poured the boiling hot water in. Don't ask why I did that. And gee... guess what? I missed the cup a bit and water started going over my thumb before reflexes kicked in and I threw the cup and dropped the pot in the sink. Needless to say it was pretty painful and I did run it under cold water straight away for a bit. But from past experiences, I have learnt not to do this for too long because if I do, I soon won't be able to do with out the soothing water and as soon as I take it away, the pain will start again. So now I have learnt to ignore the pain and carry on a usual... somewhat. Of course I have to actually try and remember not to brush it against anything else I'll be enduring shooting pains up my arm. My thumb turned a funny color as the top layer of skin died. It was like a really bad tan.
Anyhows... the moral of the story kids, is don't pour your tea over your digits. :D

I was actually told by the doctors that I work with NOT to put cold water, or any water on it, it makes it hurt worse, and makes it blister worse. Aloe helps, but if it's bad, go to the doctor and they will give you some silvadine, great stuff, makes it stop hurting and heals it good, with no scar left over. Had 2nd and 3rd degree burns on three of my knuckles, accidently dipped them in a fry vat when I was working fast food...... they gave me silvadine, and I have no scars on any of the fingers.
Also, calamine (spelled wrong) lotion helps, don't know why, but it does......

ummm Saphara that is REALLY weird advice. I have always been taught to apply water to cool the area and limit the burn, and to wash the burning substance off.
I am an RN, it is what we teach to the undergraduates, and also what we practice in the Emergency Department where I work.
I would really like to know the Drs rationale and their literature to prove that that is the right treatment

vitamin E will also help the skin heal.
depending on the severity of it you might want to get soem Polysporin to make sure it doesn't get infected...
