We were sitting around talking about different types of divinition last night. I was telling one of the girls there that I was trying to learn to read the runes.

She looked at my palm and told me to be careful not to read the person's story into the runes.

I thought this was part of relating the stones drawn. What do you think?

She was probably cautioning you to be wary of looking for what you already know about a person in the Runes. I have a hard time reading for friends because they think I'm making it up when I see something about them in the Runes since I know them so well

I've never given a reading using runes, becuase I have yet to acuire a set. So how do you know if you're really reading the runes or reading the person?

I'd have to agree with this. I don't like to do readings for people that I know very well because I'm afraid of doing the same thing. What I like best about doing readings here is that I usually just get the question and not a lot of background. I pick up on their story in the messages that I get from the reading but it doesn't influence the reading because I don't get it from personal knowledge.

A friend recently read for me, and I had the same concern. I wondered if part of what she said had come from what she already knew had happened in the past year.

...is that Runes are absolutely, unabashedly, brutally honest... no beating around the proverbial bush with them... nothing's cushioned, no punches are pulled... we may sometimes fail to correctly interpret what's before us, but what comes up is gonna be unvarnished Truth...

In my opinion, (& understand, it's only my opinion) the best way to approach reading Runes is to be a reader first, & intuitive second...

I want to make sure I'm understanding what you are saying Rick.

So in order to be a reader, just look at the runes and take them at face value, then intuitive, comes in when applying what they say to the situation?

Having... to think... brain... getting... all wrinkled... :ahhhh: 8O

Hehehe... sorry... I can only stand to be serious for just so long...

*ahem* OK... yes, you're right on the mark. For clarification, I would define reading (in any method of divination) rather narrowly as interpreting the generally accepted meanings of _______ (fill in the blank with 'Runes', or 'cards', or 'I Ching', or etc). After you've used the Runes a bit, I think you'll be able to define the situation primarily through reading (you don't have to be psychic to read Runes... it doesn't hurt, but it's not necessary)... example: if Fehu shows up, there are money issues; Uruz, health issues, etc. If you're doing a simple three or five Rune layout, where the positions are defined (ex: past, present, future, or whatever), then you just read the positions. Intuition comes more into play when you're doing, say, a full cast... then you have to find the 'paths & patterns', as I call them... it helps you wrap all the smaller segments into a whole...

My readings are not as complex as Rick's - I only do four runes - but if I'm understanding him correctly, he basically reads the same way I do. I draw the runes, consider the meanings and then use my intuition to pull it all together. During that process, I pick up on very strong messages through my intuition and convey them to the querent.

I think Rick will also agree that the final interpretation is really up to the querents. They are the ones who have a full understanding of their own lives and patterns and are better equipped than anyone to understand the messages.

Thanks for answering all my questions I"m sure that during the process I'm going to come up with a whole lot more.
