I was just wondering how many of you take the natural view and how many take the view that makeup is empowering.
If you use, do you have any magical things that you do?

Well, I wholeheartedly agree that makeup can be empowering. However, 99% of the time, I wear nothing. The only time I ever wear makeup is if I'm going out some place dark so my whiteness does make me glow in the dark like a safety strip on a trick or treater. :p

Yes, I admit...I have a thing about cosmetics. I own too much. :p
Lately, I have not worn much except a little mascara, but I usually wear more if I'm going to be gone somewhere most of the day. It's funny, I always wanted to be a proffessional makeup artist, but, whenever I'm in a store like Wal-Mart or Fred-Meyers, if I happen to be in the cosmetics department, I am always approached by other customers asking me if this color would look good on them or go with this color:p Actually, I'm pretty good at that stuff. I admit, I do know alot about makeup and different techniques...friends will always ask me to do their makeup for them, or every once in a while me and my girls will play dress up with mommies makeup.
Other than that, yes...I wear makeup quite frequently.:)

I used to rarely wear foundation, purely because my skin is so pale that if i find a shade that matches mine, (which is rare) it is invariably the wrong tone. My skin is rosy, not sallow. However, Boots in the UK have just got this foundation that matches any shade/tone of skin, and despite being skeptical, I've tried it and it really does work!
I usually only wear make-up for special occassions, or job Interviews, but less definitley looks better. I hate seeing people with inch-thick foundation, and garish eyeshadow.

I go au'naturale......unless I'm going somewhere, but even then I dont 'do it up'!! But I do have a lot of make up!!:D I have that pale but rosey complextion too, and I still cant find a foundation that matches right!!:(

I wear makeup on occasion, mostly to even skin tone. It's not too hard to match up a foundation with my skin. The problem I run into is my skin drying out too much and the sensitivity. I have however seen people wear so much of it I wonder if they went to the "Tammy Fay's School of Paint". Other than that, I don't use any.

I did a little test on the guys here, and when I wore make up they were more receptive, same as when I wear something short, tight or low cut... not that I do it all the time, but I find I am received better with makeup, not jsut that, but I am also so pale I need a little colour..
when at home - au naturel all the way :D:D:D

I wear makeup all the time. I look pretty funky if I don't. :D
Actually, everyone is so used to seeing me in make up that when I don't wear it, they always say I look tired. Well, I am! LOL!
I usually go for a pretty natural look day to day, but if I go out somewhere, (anywhere other than Shop Rite!!) I will put on more. I love the way it feels to pamper myself a bit, especially since i am in Mom Mode 99% of the time.

If I am just hanging out around the home, I will not go out of my way to put on my make-up. I almost always have make-up when I step outside of my house. I think that I look better when I have make-up on; thus, it gives me some added confidence. Anyway, after wearing make-up for all these years, it is habit.

Went without it in high school because it was trendy. Haven't been out of the house without it now since I was around 18! I feel that it's empowering in the very simple fact that it makes you feel better about yourself.
I do use a magickal method that I picked up from one of Scott Cunningham's books, I think it's in Magickal Household. As I'm putting on my makeup, I envision what kind of face I want to present....youthful, professional, sensuous, etc. and focus on those qualities.
It works! And I have my routine down to getting it on in under five minutes; base, eyeliner, shadow, mascara, eyebrows and blush. I spend more time if I'm going somewhere special.

I agree Freyja! I do something similar when I'm putting on my stage makeup.
I love makeup, both for magical use, stage use, and just to make me feel good.
I don't need it, and when I'm at home or running errands or soemthing, I don't wear it. Ironically enough, my boyfriend has probably seen more of me without than with.
Sometimes though, nothing makes you feel more like a cute girl than having a new lipstick in a color that you know looks nice.
That said, make up doesn't make the person, and there are some women I have simply been unable to recognize when they didn't have their "faces" on. And some women who went to the Tammy Fay school. Yuck!
You know there, Flar, I think men in makeup can look really attractive. Duran Duran did back in my junior high days, and Bowie still does. . .
One of my favorite makeup moments was sitting in a dressing room in college as the makeup designer taught all the actors their "looks" for a show. I watched one guy start gingerly putting on mascara, and by the end of the process he was happy as a clam. (And yes, he was very straight!)

I hate makeup. Plain and simple. I wore it from 9th-11th grade then realized I was beautiful without it and that I don't need it. I'd rather people see me, not my cosmetics. In college, it's fortunate I don't wear it anymore, because it just takes so long to put on and when I roll out of bed it's usually time to go to class. ;) I have to admit that for the Halloween parties I went to, I borrowed my roommate's makeup and it looked kinda cool with my "goth" outfit.
As for my men, they can wear makeup ANYtime they please. (As in yes! Yes, PLEASE!) Hehehe...

Amemphis, Laurie Cabot mentions in her book "power of the witch" about eyeliner, and how it dates back to the ancient egyptians. She said she feels it empowers her as well.
Freyja, I do much the same thing and it helps me to "switch" into who I want to present. I feel that makeup is akin to a glamour spell in that respect, and it boosts my confidence tremendously.
Azure, I agree that men can look fabulous in makeup. Especially Duran Duran.:D Guess I am showing my age there.
One thing I am wondering, when you are in ritual, or spellcasting, do you wear it or no? Sometimes I do and I want to present my best , and sometimes I feel that the Goddess needs to look at me true i.e. natural.
I am also wondering about jewelry. Do you have special pieces that you reserve for circle or magic work? Do you wear you everyday jewelry? What about your wedding band?
Gosh, I sound like I am doing a survey!
Flaire-FireStar

I'm exceedingly pale, as in transparent.... and with lots of freckles, even tho my skin barely if ever sees sunlight...... so I wear make up to tone down the freckles and add a little color to my oh so pale skin, I also wear my eyeliner, lipstick and eyeshadow, my whole routine takes an all of 5 minutes to do, so its not time consuming.
But if I don't wear it, people always ask me if I'm sick cuz I'm so pale...... oh well, what can I say, I'll never die of skin cancer.....lung cancer yes, skin cancer no.

OK, the makeup thing.
I do agree that it can be empowering.
I use makeup almost everyday but I don't wear much. In fact my foundation is put on so thin that you can hardly see it. As a matter of fact I wear so little of it that it rarely stays on through the whole day. I didn't start wearing makup everyday until about 2 years ago. No make-up on the weekends though. Of course I wear more if we're going out somewhere.
Magical things while applying? Bout the same thing Freyja does.
Jewlery? I'm not a big jewlery wearer either. I've got earrings that I hardly ever take our - small silver hoops. I just got my first pentacle and it's small and on a silver chain. Hasn't been off since I put it on. Wedding band always. Silver and Turquoise watch and my Granny's wedding band that my mother just recently gave to me. Those are the things I always wear. I have other jewlery for special occasions.
Rituals and Circles? I usually do this with no make-up and the jewlery mentioned above. That is who I am and the Creator knows me that way.

I had to chuckle when I read this. Not because eyeliner is not empowering - indeed, it can be when used for that purpose - but because, honestly! Have you ever seen Laurie Cabot and the sheer amount of makeup she wears? Good gods! Now that's truly frightening. ;) Don't get me wrong: "Power of the Witch" completely changed the way I saw myself as a practicing Wiccan way back when, but wow! lol
I always do rituals dressed in the clothes I was wearing before I started the ritual and wearing no makeup. If I had felt like wearing rings or jewelry (always my beautiful pentacle necklace) that day, then those, too. My rituals are done anytime, anywhere, anyhow. They're not elaborate or "ritualistic," usually just praise or a twisting of the patterns that make up Nature. I actually used to have ritual clothing and jewelry and such, but I've started doing rituals spontaneously, so they've been relegated to the back of the closet.

OW, I'm jealous that you don't need foundation. I've had several bouts with skin problems and I do need something to make my skin look a little better. I did find a tinted moisturizer that works just as well and use that in the summer because it doesn't sweat off.

I don't really wear foundation, except I'm starting to like Stila's powder foundation, because it doesn't clump like powder and doesn't look like "foundation." Fortunately I have pretty good skin.
I have friend who is very pretty, but she has pale and colorless lips so she draws them on with lip liner - it amazes me - it completely changes what she looks like.
Speaking of jewelry, I read last night that as they are excavating the Huntly (Confederate sub) the discovered the Captain had a diamond ring in his pocket - it was small - about a woman's size 6, but the band had been cut to make it stretch to fit a man's hand. What a talisman, don't you think - he was famous for really adoring his wife, and obviously he wore a jewel of hers everywhere even in war - a bit of sympathetic magic. He also had a broach, but it appears to be a man's - the sort he'd have worn himself in civilian days.

I've seen Tammy Faye style eyeliner and it's hideous. I learned how to put it on from a Mary Kay training when I sold the product. A good tip is to act like you are putting the liner IN your lashline, not on top of it. The purpose is really to darken your eyelashes, which defines your eyes. I have short eyelashes and masacara alone just doesn't do it...........but when I use liner, I can get away without mascara.
I also use navy blue eyeliner for daytime and work because it tends to look less made-up and rarely wear shadow anymore.
Jade, I'll let you know what Nivea says. I like the product because it looks very natural. Come to think of it, I've worn makeup every day since I was 18 but I only started using foundation about 7 or 8 years ago. I used to hate it because it made my skin feel oily or dirty. The products have improved a lot but the prices have skyrocketed.

when I first started wearing eyeliner I put it on the part of your eye that is inbetween your lashes and your eyeball.. I ended up with some infection that they had to use liquid nitrogen on a Q tip to burn it away! OUCH!

Used makeup as soon as I possibly could... :D
Though of course that phase wore off pretty quickly. I still wore it in high school, though I would often forget to put it on entirely. Wore it through college and for a while after.
Then I went through a spell for about a year where I didn't wear it much except for special occasions. Now I'm at a point where I kind of want to start dressing up again and putting on makeup.
*grins and shrugs* As you can perhaps tell...I don't have a feeling one way or another about it being empowering or a burden.

*nods* I think ontop-in is a good way to describe it. You should also not put it on the lower "shelf" of your lower eyelid, but put it under the lashes there too if you're going to line the lower half.

I used to wear a lot of eye make up, but I since realized that I look better without it.
Nowdays, if I do wear makeup, it's extremely light. Natural shades of eyeshadow and eyeliner, no foundation, and sometimes lipstick and glitter, if I'm in the mood. I almost never wear mascara, it feels too sticky!

I very, very rarely wear makeup...only when I feel like making myself up before I go out to a nice restraunt or something. Even when I do wear it, it's only mascara and eyeshadow, sometimes lipstick, but my husband won't kiss me if I have "junk" on my lips, cuz he hates how it feels on his.
I tried going the more made up route and got some foundation and stuff, but then I moved here, and got a tan and now my foundation color is too light, so it never gets touched.
I prefer to go without, because it's just too much trouble to put it all on, and then take it off again at the end of the day.

I feel everyone is pretty in their way, and each of us have beautiful features. To me, makeup is meant simply to define our features - it's like shading in and giving depth to a picture, rather then just having an outline. I use makeup when I want to look polished and put together - like I spent time making myself look most polished reflects on the time I spend making myself polished inside.
I think it's empowering inasmuch that it gives you "me time". You can have a bubble bath, a manicure and pedicure, blowdry and style your hair, and play with makeup shades - and by doing so you are making time to pamper and love yourself. I'm not saying that the makeup itself is what is empowering, but that loving and spending time on yourself and doing whatever makes you feel and look good *is*.
So I'll maybe use concealer for the undereyes, thin not noticeable mahogany eye liner, brown mascara after I curl eyelashes, linen or bone eyeshadow to wash the eyelid, a slick of lip gloss, and if I'm going out or to work a spot of foundation here and there. Other then the gloss, which is usually nude or natural pink anyway, all neutral colours. To me, it's no different then carefully choosing a nice, presentable outfit for a job interview, or a cute dress for a party.

I'm a lot like Saphra with the deathly-pale to the point of transparency natural coloring...I don't tan or go out in the sun without SPF 50, plus I'm a tad on the anemic side(just a tad). I have a lot of trouble finding a foundation shade that matches my natural color, so in the past I've looked a little less than good (most 'Ivory' foundations look either pink or orange on me). Now I use three different brands (Covergirl foundation, Max Factor coverup, and Revlon powder), and it looks way better. I never, ever leave the house without my makeup now! I've been complimented recently about how much better (and healthier) I look now.
I think that makeup is definately empowering. It does create a mask between you and the world, in some respects, but I dont think that's a bad thing. It lets you project the image of yourself that you WANT to project.
About the jewelry, I don't wear much. I own a LOT, but I rarely feel like putting it on. In rituals I wear my pentagram with my Coven stone on it, but I don't wear it every day. If I need luck, I wear a small pentagram ring that was given to me by a good friend. Other than that, and my watch of course, I dont wear any unless it's a special occaision. I dont even wear earrings anymore, I think if I ever do I'll have to get my ears re-peirced.

I'm too lazy to read back posts to see if anyone's mentioned this, but I did want to share it.
I'm still upset that many brands of foundation cost $10 or more, so I tried two of the cheaper ones. I loved Rimmel's, which sells for about $4 at Wal-Mart and I loved the way it looked and stayed on, but it broke my forehed out in little bumps so I had to return it :( I also tried New York Color (NYC) which was $2.99 at a drugstore and it performs as well as L'Oreal for me, with no breakouts.
I also like Rimmel's blush. It's about $2 and doesn't come with a brush, but it's recommended that you don't use the ones that come with the products anyway. Their eyeshadow is also good.
NYC's powder is also excellent for $1.89 and it refreshes my makeup and absorbs the oil better than anything else I've used. Just be careful not to drop the plastic compact because they do break easily but are also easily replaced for that price.

Foundation is usually the one thing you should splurge on if possible, since you'll wear it most and it tends to make the biggest difference, plus it tends to cover the most area. I find somedays just wearing some foundation over rough spots is all that's needed, so I don't mind paying for it. *shrugs*
It's interesting you bumped this because I was just thinking about the peach lipstick and blush I got last night. I'm surprised peach looks good on me - with ivory skin and dark brown hair and eyes I often wear cool shades and when I got the peach stuff I thought it'd look like crap but wanted to try anyway.

Have you tried using hemp? :)

Hemp? As in hemp soap? Hemp as in "cannabis plant"?
I'll try to find some... It will be hard though - our politicians go heywire once "hemp" is even thought about, because to them, any part or any product from an illegal plant can be used as a drug...

I use hemp lotion, shampoo, and conditioner. My brother also uses it and has very oily and in some parts very dry skin, and its helped balance it out. Not to promote them(just trying to be helpful), but The Body Shop(if you have one by you) sells hemp products. I know the whole line is created from a engineered plant and is legal. :)

I know a store in Copenhagen that seels hemp clothing, hemp accessories, hemp soap, hemp everything. I've heard it's very useful, and have tried to find similar things in Sweden, but it's difficult due to said politicians. I have a Body Shop nearby, so I'll take a look there. I thank you so much for this advice, as my skin has become a source of extreme frustration. ;)

No problem! Another good thing for breakouts is tea tree. But I'm not sure if it has any drying effects. :)

I like makeup, I'll wear it to work and when I go out, but rarely on the weekends if I'm just kicking back. I have so much of it - I have about 7 shades of red lipstick!
I will say I'm a complete 'girly-girl' when it comes to bath products, etc. I've got all kinds of matching scents of soap/bodywashes, lotions, oils, etc. It's almost embarrasing... but at least I still smell okay. :D

I have dry/greasy skin and I use a tea tree stick on breakouts (it's also from the Body Shop). It's not too drying cuz it has other ingredients in it; aloe and a few others. It dries the pimple, but not my skin. For $6.00 it was worth it for me.

I have tons of lipstick too - I spent years trying to find the right shade of red... I've found my 3 favourite red's, each for different moods - one is natural, one is shiny and bright, one is romantic (Revlon Moisturestay Liptint in Sheer Nude, CG Lipslicks in Hipster, and Revlon Superlustrous in Limited Edition Winter Rose, respectively).
Then I have light and bright pinks, plums, and lots of shiny or glittery ones, then the peach one I just got.

Rainx - Have you tried MAC's Russian Red? Very rich, matte red and it's great when you go out at nite... I agree the right shade of red for I think anybody is so hard to find. I have a few I like, but the MAC is my fave. Can't do pinks, but some shades of plums I like, but mostly it's red and alot of browns.

I am a make-up whore. I'll try almost any brand at least once.
I love the Nivea tinted moisturizer. I'm pale, too, & almost everything else was too pink or too...something. Plus foundation tends to look increasingly weird as my skin dries throughout the day. I don't have that problem with Nivea. I love Nivea products, & get the sunscreen when I visit my brother in England (it isn't available here)
www.nivea.com
I've been hearing about the make-up formulated by Lauren Hutton (model/actress) for older women. I wanted to try it because I was getting weary of trying out goop-made-for-teenagers on my middle-aged face. I happened to see her on a shopping channel while channel-surfing one night, & the stuff was a lot less than on her website.
It's called 'Good Stuff' & I love it. The kit comes with a magnifying mirror (which scared me to see me that close). There are spot concealers, a blush, contour powders, eyeliner, & lip balm, all in one case (with that scary mirror),each product encircled by a different color. If you buy the brush set, each handle is color-coordinated to the product it's for, so it's idiot-proof. It comes with a video of her demonstrating it, with tips (I can finally make my nose look straight) & a booklet to put in your purse. I can play with the kit for hours.

I wear eye make-up, mostly in olive/mossy greens to make my eyes look greener. There's a website selling make-up just for redheads that has some colors I like. I'll buy any brand if I like the colors.

I was so happy when Rimmel started marketing their stuff here. I've been buying it for years in Britain. I just switched from Loreal's 'LasOut' mascara to Rimmel's 'Exaggerate'. it's goopier so I get the same effect with less, & it's easier to get off.
I love make-up. I have dated guys for years without them ever seeing me without make-up.
If I wanted to look natural, all I would wear would be Nivea Creme.

Garnet, I posted about the Nivea tinted moisturizer a few pages back, I love it too. I never did get around to writing them to make sure they were going to keep selling it since Wal-Mart stopped carrying it and I was worried. I use it in summer since it is the only thing that doesn't sweat off - until I get a tan. Their dark shade is too dark for me, even when I have a tan.
Thanks for those links, and I appreciate what someone said about splurging on foundation, as it can pay to buy the more expensive ones if you have skin problems. However, I've bought too many that don't live up to their claims and would rather spend my money elsewhere. I just threw out about six bottles of foundation that didn't do what they said they would. I splurge on my nighttime moisturizer and eye cream and I feel that's enough.
I stopped wearing mascara some months back when I had lots of problems with my allergies and even waterproof ones were smudging and smearing. I love NYC's black eyeliner pencil. It goes on very smoothly and while it doesn't state that it's waterproof, it doesn't smear and smudge. I'm finding that I don't really miss mascara and my eyes seem to be healthier since I stopped using it. I only wear it for special occasions now.

Freyja, if there's a Drug Emporium near you, look for Nivea stuff there. I love the body wash, & Target & Wal-mart stopped carrying it, but Drug Emporium still does (so does Walgreens, for more$$$). Drug Emporium carries more Nivea products than anywhere else. I just discovered "Inner Beauty daytime renewal therapy' & love it.

I haven't worn make-up in ages... haven't really felt a need to, that and my boys trashed it and I just haven't gotten around to replacing it.. It is nice to wear once and awhile but being red-headed it's hard to find anything that really works for me, and for some reason it doesn't matter what brands I try, I'm either allergic or it literally doesn't want to stay.

I don't wear a lot of makeup myself - I work from home and on the weekends I might put on a bit of concealer and powder if I'm going out but that's usually about it.
Has anyone tried the Physician's Formula line of products? I'm curious to try the powders, as they're a mix of colors (or there's one that's different shades of green for people with reddish complexsions) but I don't want to spend the $10 if it's not worth it.

In High school I wore a lot of make-up (hey it was the 80's) but now it's just a little foundation to even my skin a bit, brown eyeliner & mascara and a touch of lip color! Just enough to give me a bit of something against my paleness!
If I'm going somewhere fancy I'll dress it up a little.

I noticed there are a LOT of pale folk on here...I was just wondering what brands and shades of foundation, coverup, and powder everyone uses?
I mentioned my brands before, but I use Max Factor Erase Secret coverup in White(I was so happy to find this product! Most brands' palest coverup is darker than my foundation, and the teeniest dab of this one is enough to balance out my coloring), CoverGirl Fresh Look foundation in Ivory(this is the lightest foundation I've found that doesn't turn a weird orange or pink on my face as it dries), and Revlon Oil-Absorbing Mattifier powder in Sheer.

I tried the green coverup, but it's *too* green for my complexion...I looked ill. LOL I've seen other people with darker complexions use it with great success.

Maybelline EverFresh in Ivory, Rimmel Stay Matte in Transparent, and Almay Cover-Upstick (for undereyes) in light (it's nearly white).
I had the same thing with the green corrector - there's no way that'll look natural on me, it just looks green!

Well, I'm pale but weird Morrighana. I'm blonde with some reddish bits, but instead of all fresh and pink toned, thanks to my Native American ancestors, my skin is really a pale olive with a gold undertone.
I don't wear a foundation except on stage, and then I blow the money for Prescriptives, which actually matches my coloring. In the daily world I wear Stila powder foundation in 10 or 20 Watts, but without adding water, so I just get a light complexion evening.
I like to add some color to my face, so I sometimes use Benetint for a rosy glow, or a blush with a peachy-coral tone like Nars "Deep Throat," Clinque "Geranium," or Stila's "Gerbera" - I also have a pale peachy Rimmel color I love, and can't think of the name of it off the top of my head.
I think I said it earlier, but for cheap products, I really think Rimmel is one of the best. I'm very fussy about what I put on my face.

Wow, with everyone raving about Rimmel, I'll have to try it! :D
Azure, how much does Prescriptives cost? I've never even heard of it, lol.

Unfortunately, my natural beauty is flawed by bad skin. If my skin were better, I'd probably go without most of the time.
I finally found a foundation that works for me and it's been right under my nose for years. I just bought Revlon's Colorstay. Their shades match my skin, and it really does hold up to my sweating in the Oklahoma heat and humidity.

Since it's summer my skin has darkened a bit (yeah, so now it's really pale instead of super realy pale :D).
Summer also means using a bunch of foundation sucks :) So I just use Neutrogena Healthy Skin Eye Cream under eyes, and Neutrogena Pore Refining Shine Control Gel on my t-zone, and of course face sunscreen in SPF 30!, along with Almay Puretints (lippy - SPF 25) in Nude. And then Rimmel Double Act in Porcelain mixed up with Aveeno Positively Radiant moisturizer (so it's like tinted moisturizer instead of heavy foundation) over the odd rough spot, and Maybelline Everfresh in Ivory for under eyes, with some mascara when I want to be "all made up".
I got Revlon Moisturous in Rosewater last night - very pretty pink, plus SPF 17. I'm all about the sunscreen and little makeup now :)

hmm I don't wear foundation, because I have (alot of) freckles, so unless I want to completely dull them... *hugs freckles*. I rarely, if ever, wear alot of makeup, unless I am going somewhere I want to look nice. I really only wear black eyeliner under me eye, and sometimes mascara. yep.

I've recently started cutting back on the amount of makeup I wear. I've noticed it's made my skin about a million times clearer.
Right now I'm down to powder, and lip gloss, or eyeliner and mascara if I wanna get really fancy. 8O
