You best and easiest bet is to go to a large bookstore such as Borders, Barnes & Noble, or go to amazon.com and look up a copy of Janina Rene's TAROT SPELLS, which can do a far better job of explaining it better than any of us can!
The spells in the book use images from the Robin Wood deck and are chosen because they represent some part of the visulization needed for the spell the cards are chosen and laid out in a particular order or shape to help the particular spell, also.
In a nutshell:
You clear your space and call on the universe to help you.
You chose the cards.
You lay them out in a particular sequence. There are visualizations that go with each card. you can also use coordinated candles, clothes, minerals too.
You have an invocation to say and run through the affirmation of the spell.
The spell is cast.

A tarot reading in and of itself cannot cause anything to happen. This is the biggest problem with new readers and most querents- just because 'bad' cards turn up does not suddenly make them "written in stone; so it is written; so shall it be done!"
A tarot reading is a random draw of shuffled cards.
Tarot spells are a carefully considered and crafted thing, with a specific purpose in mind. That purpose cannot harm another or interfere with their free will.

It is a wonderful book. I have a copy of it!
I have tried a couple spells from them, and I must say, they have worked to my satisfaction! :D
Good luck!

OOOOH! Which ones? Tell us! Tell us!
To better answer BloodCrow, I am going to tell you this personal experience, which I also helps explain the underlying reason a spell can or doesn't work.
In the supermarket you see them all the time- those dumb little books that say things like "You too can levitate using common kitchen ingredients!" most people buy them, read what they say, try them, find out they don't work, and toss them away saying 'This STUFF doesn't work!' Well, it can my dears...
One of the spells in the book has to do with connection with 'the' someone you want. This spell is non-specific, meaning you cannot cast a spell asking for the married man down the street to magically appear in your bed like in 'Bewitched' or something. You cannot force an individual to do something they do not or cannot do. That is the understanding in magick.
For this spell you have to write a list of the qualities you desire in a person. Well, that list took me two days to write. During that time I was forced to think about what exactly I wanted in a future lover. The spell also asked for 13 red candles which I had to go out and buy. I also had to annoint them (not part of the spell in the book but a part of what I do)- which took another day or two. I actually do have 13 candleholders, but thought they needed a good polishing. During the night it took me to make them shine I concentrated on the spell, the list, and now the holders so bright to hold the annointed candles.
I did make an addition to the spell; as I lit each candle I chanted:
'Light the flame, bright the fire
Red will bring me my desire'.
I did the entire spell exactly as written; I did the opening invocation, pulled ot the list and read it aloud. I put the red candles in a circle around the list and lit each one reciting my chant. I did the cards and the visualization. I extinguished the candles and went to sleep.
The next day a friend called me up to tell me he had met a man he thought I might be interested in.
Did the spell work?
The reason it did is because I didn't just pull some stuff off the shelf, light a candle, do some mumbo-jumbo, and expect the sun, moon, stars, and a Mercedes with a leather interior to fall to the ground at my feet. I thought long and hard about the spell, and intent is a big part of it. I prepared for the spell, which is another aspect of success. Writing the list and polishing the holders inbued the spell with energy. I did not try to influence any one person - I sent my request out to the ethers and left it in the hands of the Goddess.
In actuality, I did not meet this man at that time, although about a year later I ran into him at a function. We are acquaintances, but nothing more. Next time I do a spell like that, I include 'No Married Men' in the list!
HINT: If you do this spell during the waning moon, change the chant to 'Red the canle, bright the fire, loneliness it not my desire!'

I used the spell to attract the love of a certain person. Mind you, when it comes to matters of the heart, it's probably best not to interfer with nature!
I will say the spell worked...
The man it was intended for did "come back to me". But was it because of the spell or because he loved me and truely wanted to come back? My theory....probably a little of both. I don't think that spells can turn the nature of a person, and I don't think you can MAKE people feel things they don't. Of course....after two years of being with that person, we went our seperate ways. That was a mutual decision, we were both more than ready to move on. Make sure what you want is really what you need! ;)

basically , your saying that its almost like using candles in magick , for instance , you would use the lovers card as you would a red candle , because it is attributed to love?

And I very firmly believe that. You can cast all the spells you want, and nothing will happen if there isn't the potential for real attraction there. . .

i would only suggest that, if possible, you shun Borders, Barnes and Noble, etc, and support your local community bookstore.
if you have access to such an independent store, then you can provide them with the name (and isbn?), and they can get it even if it's not in stock.

I agree that the book would be a great idea if you want to go in depth with Tarot Magick. I find Tarot is like candle magick in that it can enhance a spell and help you better focus your energy.
Sometimes to give my spell and extra boost I place the Tarot card that best represents my working on my altar to help better focus myself. I do other little things too, like display cards with a sabbath theme or meditate on a card to help balance myself.
My favorite Tarot spell if you don't mind me saying involves sketching. This never really came from a book- I made it up when I needed a release and it evolved into a simple magick. Lets say I am having a bad time. Say eight of swords bad, I center myself and take the card that best represents my problems and sketch it. It doesn't have to be perfect and quite often isn't a perfect copy of the card, I add details as I feel the need. When this drawing is complete I meditate on it a while then choose the card that I wish to be like queen of wands for example. I then sketch out this one. I do a little chant and leave both pictures up in view, within a few days I either remove the first drawing or cover it up with my solution drawing.
Its a great way to express yourself creatively and it really helps me clear out things in my life.
