Once upon a time Lakshmi and Vishnu were enjoying each others company in Vaikuntha. A brahmana (priest) named Bhrigu Muni came to see Them. He had been challenged to kick Vishnu on the chest (another story, which I'll save for another time), and that's exactly what he did. Vishnu immediately became concerned,
"My chest is hard like a thunderbolt. I hope you did not hurt your foot." Lakshmi, the Goddess of Fortune and Prosperity, took a different attitude, "This chest is my resting place. How dare you place your foot upon it? I curse you and all the brahmanas henceforth to be poverty-stricken."
So that's the story. Now I know why I never have money...
