Oaths, Vows, giving your Word; what do these things mean to you? How important is keeping your Word? Being true to a Vow? Being true to a sworn Oath?

It's a pretty rare thing for me to make a promise or give my word to someone, but when I do I try pretty hard to follow through with it. So it's pretty important to me.

I generally don't have to go that far...if I say I'm going to do something, I mean it. I never offer anything to people unless I meant it. My friends know that of me.

By my troth, and in good earnest and so God mend me, and by all pretty oaths that are not dangerous, if you break one jot of your promise, or come one minute behind your hour, I will think you the most pathetical break-promise, and the most hollow lover, and the most unworthy that may be chosen out of the gross band of the unfaithful; therefore beware my censure and keep your promise.

I have a major problem with people who constantly lie. Even if its a small thing I tend to flip out. If it were an oath that I took by choice (like in a coven or marraige vows) I'd never break it. If it were something like lying under oath in court....eh....I wouldnt see the harm in it really since it wasnt lying to anyone I cared about, and it was to protect my ass or the asses of those I care about.

Eh.. don't hate me or anything, but I *do* give this warning to *anyone* who asks me to promise *anything*!
I don't keep my promises.
If I say "I promise I'll do (this and this)." I won't. So don't think I will.
However!!!
When I *swear* I will do something.. I will. No doubt about that. I will try my hardest and do everything in my power to fulfill that. The word "promise" was just thrown about so much in my life that it never held any meaning for me. *shrug*
So.. I swear. I don't promise. :)

I believe that an oath or vow are very important, but I think I fall into the catagory of the whole promise thing, when you say I promise but don't necessarily mean it. If I give me word or take an oath or a vow then I"ll do my human best to uphold it. also when someone tells me something in confidence that'll never leave my lips again until I"m told It can.

If I promise, vow, etc.. I keep it. I don't even have to say the actual words promise or vow. I am about the most honest person I know with the exception of my best friend, who is untouchable in that aspect. It sometimes sucks because I am by no means naive or gullible, but I do expect others to do (or not do) as they say. I learn who is dishonest and lose respect, as well as trust, for them. There are still a surprisingly high number of people that I still respect and trust. I mean I'm not completely anal about it.

I will do anything that I say I will, because my word, and honor mean more to me than life. If someone can't trust me, then I have not proved to be a good friend, daughter, sister, neice, etc. I have broken a promise before, and it came back and bit me in the arse, and I lost a good friend because of it. The word promise may be thrown around a lot, but not by me, when I say it, I mean it.

i cant remember who said it but i have always resonated to the phrase: "to think own self be true".
So to be true to myself i have to live up to any vows or promises i make.
<Shrugs> thats just what makes me me
