~sigh~

No good here -- too much tree-cover to see the sky.

I won't complain, though. The last 2 really spectacular, "once in a century" meteor showers (one in '94, one summer before last) I got to see from isolated mountain lakes above 7000' feet. The first one, I was working at a lodge, & we went out on the docks & watched till we were frozen. :D

Summer before last, we did a backpacking trip. Had a nice, big expanse of granite to lay on, bundled in sleeping bags & wool hats. Got to see one skip off the atmosphere -- really cool! Another that blazed across the whole sky, blinding-bright. (Plus all sorts of supernatural occurances that trip: Miraculous healings, malevolent faerie glamours, nearly fatal occurances, acts of Magic & healing, banishings... all in all, a spectacular trip on several fronts.)

Hm... on second thought, maybe it's a GOOD thing I can't take in this shower!

We got up at 3:30, drove over to the park where it's pitch black....and solid cloudcover! We couldn't see anything!! :-(

There was a HUGE thunder storm last night so not only where there too many clouds, but there was way too much rain. But it's probably a good thing, because the peak happened at 5am, here and I don't do mornings well.

Two of my roomies and I stayed up to watch. However, the lights of LA wiped out most of the stars, but we did get to see some nice big meteors as they streaked by.
It was a perfectly clear night too. However, none of us wanted to drive around aimlessly in the dark trying to find a good dark sky viewing area.

I posted a thread about this in Scientific yesterday but didn't have time to bump it today, so I'm glad you posted it here. We couldn't see it from where we are, either.

But the Full Moon is awesome.

I set the alarm and got up at five. The cats looked at me like I had lost my mind. ;)

Only saw three shooting stars, but it was great to see *any*. The moonset over the backyard was well worth the effort to get up early, just by itself.

ARG!!! No! I missed it *cries* I was looking forward to that... :wah2: I thought it was next week... *grr* ok, I guess I'll just wait another 97 years... I'm sure I'll be alive then ;)

It happens once a year, silly. :) It's the Leonids meteor shower, that happens every November when the earth passes through its (the meteor's) dust cloud, so you'll get the chance to see it many, many times.

not what they said on msnbc.
that this is the last year for about 97 or so. The orbit will no
longer go through that particular dust cloud.

There will still be the annual meteor shower, MSNBC just says that there won't be one as big as this one for a while. :)

Taken from http://www.msnbc.com/news/836956.asp

"No significant Leonid storms are expected again until 2033 or later. Another major storm won’t likely occur until at least 2098."

I took that to mean that they're still going to happen, just not really big, because:

"In normal years, Leonid meteor rates top out at a few dozen per hour, or nearly one per minute. Only when our planet travels through a dense stream put down relatively recently can outbursts like this year’s occur."

2033? Cool - I have something to look forward to when I'm 54 :D
I'm still determined to live to 73/74 to see Halley's Comet as it was cloudy the last time it came around! :(
