I absolutely depise littering and think that people who litter have no feeling of respect or responsibility towards the Earth, others or even themselves. Littering is a thoughtless, selfish act that harms the enviroment and marrs the beauty of this world.
I'm not talking about biodegradable stuff like banana peels, nut shells and apple cores which is helpful to the enviroment. I'm referring to cans, bottles, plastic, etc.--stuff that lays there for years or even centuries until someone picks it up and disposes of it properly.

I try not to and everytime we go for a walk or down to the river a trash bag always goes with us and we pick up other peoples trash. It is amazing how people throw things in the river and swear they dissaper forever... grrrrr

I never litter, and sometimes pick stuff up, but I am scared of where its been to do it all the time, besides, the raccoons and skunks and cats do the littering enough around here!
and I try to drink 1 liter of water a day... ;)

Nope. I don't. My car is proof of that. If I don't have a garbage can nearby, I hold onto it and sometimes forget to toss it once I get out of the car.
If it's biodegradable, like a snack I've brought on a hike, then I don't have any problem with tossing a peel or shell on the ground. I know it won't hurt.

wow. wow. Almost everyone litters. No one recycles one hundred
percent of their waste. Does it make it more ok that you give
your trash to someone else to litter with? It seemed black or white
to me. I voted yes. the only one so far. I wish I didnt. I wish I
had the will and the energy to recycle all my plastics and paper,
to compost all my organic material, but I dont. sorry.

In fact, I pick up other people's litter. Not because I'm into that sort of thing, quite the contrary; but I know that if I don't, nobody will. Maybe it's a Virgo thing. And I recycle everything I can. Halloweens' jack-o-lantern is in the garden gradually becoming mulch in a wonderfully gothic way. What is filling up the landfills are disposable diapers. What ruins just about every national park or beach are the millions of cigarette butts, flicked away, often still burning, by the socially incontinent.

I guess it depends on what one considers littering.....
as humans we pollute our enviroment, we manufacture things that
cant be re-absorbed by the planet. We purchase goods that
are made my corporations that are unfriendly to the enviroment,
we drive cars, we have electricity, etc. etc.
If you mean, "do you throw down a candy wrapper?" thats different.
I watched a special on a man dedicated to recycling, and he was
good, but still he admitted that no one can "not litter" we just
make too much stuff. His weekly trash would fit in a coffe can.
Was very cool, but a ton of work and advanced planning.

He is NOT that bad, believe me, I'd kick his butt. He litters in his car and sometimes it even gets into the trash bag..........
I answered "I really try not to" because I'm really into this honesty thing lately. I can not say that I am 100 percent perfect but I do my best. I even wrapped a piece of gum and put it in my coat pocket recently............

By the way, I really DO recycle EVERYTHING. I live in a dorm and there are separate bins for paper, comingled, and regular trash. It's right outside my door. It's VERY easy to recycle everything. Some people just don't want to put any effort out at all. *shrug* I guess it depends on how important the Earth is to you...
Every little bit helps.

Ick..No. It's a disgusting habit. I hate walking home from school and seeing all this litter on the way. If I carried a bag with me (rather than just taking my books...) I'd probably make an effort to pick some of it up as well.

I voted yes, but not all the time, because I do throw my cigarette butts out the window (they make the car really stink like smoke if you don't), but I don't litter the streets with garbage, I even pick up garbage when i take a walk or am at the hospital grounds. But I agree with Flar, everyone litters, the garbage dumps are proof of that, it may be all contained in one "neat" little space, but it is still littering. Does everyone just think we put our garbage out on the curb and it just magically dissapperas???
Psyche Ague
November 21st, 2002, 12:42 AM
Yeah, that's true enough, Saphra. Point taken.
I had defined litter in the more "traditional" sense of the term. I don't think everyone thinks of their trash as litter, per se...
But it is.

I try not to litter. I yell at my husband when he throws bottles or cans out the window. I might throw a paper wraper out the window, but if you look on the floor of my car, you'll see paper wrappers all over the place. ;) You know what, I'd like to have one of those earth dombs...any one know what I'm talking about?? Earth dom? Earth ship? Anyway they are made from tires and soda cans and mud. They make the roof with a dip in the middle so that it will catch the rain and that is where your water comes from. (It has a purifier in it.) You cook outside in a solar powered oven. The whole house is run off of solar power, so your bills are like nothing and your not polluting...well, not nearly at all. Oh, and your water waste (your tolet waste, too.) go out into your garden! Isn't that nice? Ovously not your veg. or herb garden, but your flower garden. You put your food waste in the veg. and herb garden.
Love to have one! (Love to have my own house.)

I really never litter, it's just not nice and pointless. I just hold on to my rubbish untill I find a bin no matter how far away the next bin is.
Everyone I know seems to litter so I often annoy them by shouting at them to pick there rubbish up and throw it away.

where all the residents were very concerned with keeping the forest pristine. It was the "flat-lander" tourists who would come up and throw their garbage, (and lit cigarettes) all over the place.
I stopped to put out two roadside fires last year that were started this way in piles of leaves. Now I carry two fire extinguishers in the car. Last year thousands of acres of national forest were lost from fires ignited by discarded cigarettes. The world is not your ashtray, nicotine-suckers! I don't litter because I get to live with its effects. The ditches up and down my road contain all sorts of neat and interesting rubbish. Most of it is the usual stuff, but every so often something new pops up. I've found boxes full of duck parts (wings and heads). Have no idea what that's about. The canal that bisects our property has become a universal recepticle. I've found the odd family pet in trash bags, butchered deer, major household appliances, furniture, and auto parts. Every so often a bit of porn gets tossed out the car, some of which blows onto my property for my children to find. But my absolute favorite is when people dump their left-overs on us. Boiled seafood is very popular around here. For reasons I've never figured out, people who live in town will have a crawfish/shrimp/crab boil and drive all the way out here to dump sacks full of the shells. I don't know how many of you are familiar with the fragrance of rotting marine life, but after all these years it has become an aroma to remind me of home. I wish I could get these people's license numbers so I could find out where they live and dump the remains of my next crawfish boil in their front yard. They also like to dump their live pets on us, even though the Humane Society is only two or three miles away. We've got something like a dozen cats around here, none of which were bought.

:eyebrow: Um, I'm not trying to jump you, Saphra....but that's kind of an odd way to go about it. You don't want to mess up your own car so you throw your butts out the window?
If you clean out your ashtray (which is there for a reason) after you get home then your car won't smell as bad.
And like Gwion said...cigarette butts is probably one of the biggest litter problems in this country. Mainly because people can't see a problem with "throwing one little butt out the window"
There obviously is a problem with is as we had several forest fires start this summer because of people doing that, and it's not illegal to toss a butt out the window.
*smiles* Like I said, I'm not trying to jump you...I just spent a great many weekend mornings with my 4-H club cleaning up a stretch of road and 70% of what we picked up was cigarette butts and fast food wrappers. Makes it kind of a hot button issue for me.
As far as the "no one can not litter" argument....there is to me a difference between trash and litter. Littering is defined as not putting trash in its "proper" place. Recycling is good and well worth the effort....but at least disposing properly of your trash is better than just throwing it down where you're standing and forgetting about it.

I voted I try not to. And it's not because I'm pagan, but because it's how I was raised. My parents always made a big deal of keeping the world clean and not littering.
However, I can't honestly say that I never, ever litter, cause I don't know. Not on purpose, that's for sure.
It's funny that I found this thread, you know. I just had a lesson about pollution and littering with junior high students:)

I never throw anything on the ground unless I know darn well it's biodegradable, and will sometimes pick things up to throw them out. I hate going to the park and finding all sorts of yuck all over, in such a beautiful area.

Okay, I have to say something here..... I don't throw my cig butts out if it is dry outside, or I am near any forest, I'm not that dumb. I will use my ashtray if I have too. I also don't throw anything else out the window of my car. I love mother nature as much as the next person, so, just for you people, I will put my cigs out in the ashtray.
And yes, I am a nicotine-sucker, Gwion, but I'm trying to quit.
And I do understand all of your points. ~mumbles something about keeping some of her opinions to herself~

I am unbelievably obsessive about littering. I hold onto my garbage if there is no can nearby. At school, I hold onto paper scraps so I can bring them home and recycle them. When my sister was in kindergarten, she would bring home bits of construction paper in her socks to recycle them. I guess its a family thing.

Actually, I've got an entire backseat of litter from what I've gathered walking to and from my car. It's almost an OCD kind of thing where I can't walk passed a piece of trash.
And while it's true that just taking something and placing it in the trashcan can be considered littering in itself, I still find it better than leaving it about for the wildlife and streams near me to be polluted. But it's not about solving all the problems, it's about preventing more.

Based on the traditional definition of the word; Carelessly tossing trash on the ground.
I also pick up other peoples litter. I don't let my car fill up with it but I do dispose of it properly. I recycle religiously and compost as well. I do not have a burn barrel and would admonish anyone who does to read up on it and stop burning trash.

To be perfectly honest, I try my hardest to always be concious about it and not litter. I used to not even think twice about throwing my cigarette butts down, UNTIL I met my fiance. You won't ever catch him throwing even his smoke butts down, and it has officially rubbed off on me. Usually I will hand them to him because I don't like the butts in my pocket, but even if he's not around...I don't throw them down anymore. :)

I don't litter, but I put things down the drain that are not biodegradable, and I throw things in the trash that aren't biodegradable, and I live an American lifestyle so I have a lot of solid waste in general that's harmful to the environment... _inabox_ Litter is a small problem compared to the enormous quantities of things we throw away in our everyday lives... Just because it's in a trash bin, doesn't mean it's going to go away. :(

I don't litter. I also tend not to eat or consume things that come in wrappers or other throwaway packaging. So I don't have anything to litter with. I can't stand it personally, when people throw their trash on the ground, anywhere. I feel that the behavior reflects a lack of dignity and respect for this life.

They do when the product isn't actually biodegradable. But materials that take hundreds of years to break down, and/or those that are harmful to the environment are consumed and thrown out at a level that can't continue, because landfills are filling up and we're shipping it off to poor countries to make their lives even worse with our waste.
Not littering is a great thing to do... but it's not the entirety of the responsible waste management issue. Not buying things that cannot be reused, decomposed, or recycled responsibly is just as important, IMO.

The filling landfills is a myth. We have a greater landfill capacity now than at any other time in history. All of the trash in all of our landfills would fit into a 5 square mile site.
