How do you all deal with people when they seem to know more about what you believe then you do?
I just got off of another board and one member was telling me what I believed and that I didn't know anything about what they were talking about, even though I lived the situation for 21 years of my life!!!!! I hate being told that becuase I'm female or Christian raised or that I wasn't really Christian raised that This is what I believe!!! Hello I just told you what I believe so get off my back.
Sorry I had to get that off my chest. After 22 years of that you tend to get a little annoyed with people.

I change the subject, ignore them, or walk away.

Boy... I agree!
EX. On an old forum (defunct) I used to go to, there was some girl (I think) who tried to get me into that "I've had a worse life than you" war. I don't need to argue. The way I figured it, there are events in my life, good or bad, that have affected me in a certain way. Futhermore, these same events, if they happened to anyone else, would not have affected any other person in the exact same way. So I didn't argue w/her.
Some people also just need to tell you everything. This is how I do it, this is what happened to me, this is what I think, and they try to make you feel smaller by comparison.
Best suggestion? Yeah, ignore. Don't say "oh, you don't know," because that will only further the argument.
I'm not exactly sure about the situation you're speaking of Lilly. Just seems vague (or I haven't had enough coffee!). Just dodge the damn fools, anyway.

ditto on the ignoring them. It's hard I know... No matter how often I offer that piece of advice, I find it hard to follow myself.
No one can tell you what you believe because everyone is different.

I have always found that if you say "If you say so" and then walk away -- gets them every time. Oh yes - be sure to say it with a smle :).

I know what you are talking about, I have a "friend" that thinks he is more "powerful" than I am, and I just tell him to leave me alone and it is none of his business as to my "powers". then I ignore him. It seems to work. Ignoring people sometimes makes them go away, or makes them think you see things their way, what ever it is, it works for the most part..... ((((big hugz))))

If they are going to act like that then they aren't worth talking to, ignore them, don't let them get to you.
If someone approached me like that, I'd turn them into a frog! *kidding* :p
there's always at least one in every crowd...

Thanks all for your help. They way it usually starts with me is, I'm curious about your religious beliefs please expand. . . So when I tell them what I believe that's when they start in on the whole you can't believe that. . . and so on.

I don't know. I think I'd have to have a little fun with them. I just can't help becomming the world's biggest smart a$$ when someone does such a beautiful job of setting themselves up.
"You can't believe that!"
"Don't be silly. Of course I can. I just did. Watch, I'll do it again."
Closes eyes and scrunches face in concentration. Opens eyes.
"There, see? Nothing to it."
"But you can't - "
"Another demonstration? Fine. I now believe you're a giant bowl of tapioca."
"You can't be serious!"
"You might want to take a look in the mirror, pal."
Watch and see if they actually check.

Heh heh!
I actually had someone tell me the other day, "Well, you know that's worshiping the devil. You're ok with that?" Holy crimoly! I didn't laugh or anything, just quoted. "In 1974, the Council of American Witches decides upon 13 principles of Wiccan belief. Number 12 states... etc." I think I part way freaked her out.
Sheez. These people (at work) think I'm so damn odd. Two things for them:
"Evidently, you've never actually MET a satanist."
and
"Today's mighty oak was just yesterday's nut." (Gods, I love bumber sticker lines!)

SERIOUSLY ITS FREAKING IRRATATING!!!!
when someone is SOOOOO close minded and tell you that your crazy and full of shit becuase of what u believe.... i always believe that everyone is intitled to believe what they want...but the most frustrating was with my ex.... he was brought up texas babtist...::rolleyes:::...and always told me i was stupid for believing in the things i do...he was plain ignorant...needless to say it didnt last long...if i had known what he was REALLY like i would have never gotten with him...
he told me all the time that his religion was right and everything else was wrong ..arrrrrrrrrrrrggggggg!!!!!!
but when im in a situation where someone is totally close minded i just walk away or shut my mouth, its not worth wasting my energy over
