from CNN:

I googled their website:
http://www.thehpalliance.org/

This may sound crazy to some of you, but I actually requested information about starting a local chapter. I thought the kids might like to do a book and toy drive for Family of Woodstock, or trick-or-treat to support the Red Cross. I thought this might be a really fun way to give back to the community that was there for us after the fire, while encouraging reading and leadership in the kids at the same time.

(No I haven't seen the most recent movie yet. Friday, if all goes well, so no spoilers please!)

Interesting idea. I can't find any issue with this.

I absolutely cannot find issue with this! It is a wonderful idea! It is good to get young people to be able to believe in something. Rowling was specific when she had Dumbledor AND actually Voldemort telling Harry he was protected by love. While Dumbledor was adamant about, Voldemort appeared confused that love could be more powerful than him.
So, having kids do charity work in his name does not mean that they can forget their own responsibility for the work that they are doing, and how important it is for them to give of their time for social and charitable reasons. It sure beats the Heck out of sitting in front of a TV or video game complaining!

I want to do something for the Red Cross, especially if we can help other families who have suffered fire or other disasters locally. I bet there will be a lot of local interest, especially in Rosendale. It just struck me as something Rosendale would get a kick out of. I like the idea of trick-or-treating for charity.

This will be great for the kids! Damien in particular has mentioned repeatedly wanting to get involved in local charity since the fire, especially supporting needy families. (Maybe we can host a "Goblet of Fire" game drive for families who've been through disasters. A lot of people gave us board games after the fire, and it kept us close and having fun even through the hard times.) And this is a FUN way of doing it. (Do we get to dress up in costume? Please tell me we get to play with costumes! :boing:) Hell, even my grouchy ex-husband was interested.

I've always been inspired by JK Rowling, not just the books. She seems to get a kick out of this group. Their website was named the fan site of the month on her own website.

I'll put this in the catagory with the Twilight religion and people who actually believe they are Jedi (and I'm a star wars fan).

OMG! I like the idea of starting a chapter! That sounds so cool! And it would be a perfect start to my fundraising ideas to save rainforests and the people and animals who live there!

What's so bad with this particular group? They don't think that wizards or hogwarts are real. They think that the IDEALS behind Dumbledore and the Potter series are great ideals, and they are using a major pop icon for hte current generation to get these younger folks more involved in their communities.

This group managed to raise of 13,000 books to send to Rwandan kids. They've done amazing things, because Harry Potter and Dumbledore presented a unique outlook on the world for younger folks. In a way that was easily understood.

EVERY generation has something fictional that draws people together, and if that iconography can be used for humanitarian reasons, why not?

Yeah, but they have fun doing it. And everyone knows that having fun when doing something serious is Bad. :goodgrief

Especially if there's kids involved. We should all teach our kids to be dour, straight-faced, and to shun inspiration from any but a select few Approved Rational and Unfunny Sources. Oh yeah, and no smiling! We can't have kids smiling when learning to be good people. They need to learn early that kindness and responsibility are boring and depressing.

Did you even read what the page was about? They don't actually believe in the books they are using the fundamentals and a pop icon to try and get kids involved in their communities... there is no religious movement in it...
