View Full Version : Our sorta-neighbors lost their apartments.

It's hard to explain, but we actually have several complexes next to each other in our little ... area on the block. To get to me, you drive past those I mentioned in the subject line; they live almost actually on the road.

...I didn't explain that too well, but oh, well. The point being is that they live in another section and aren't technically our neighbors, but close enough. They're 3 minutes' walk away. Either way, a couple of days ago, we had some really severe thunderstorms. Two seemed to be directly over us with no delay between lightning and extremely loud, window-shaking thunder.

One of these storms caused very strong lightning in our area, and someone's apartment was hit by lightning, in the same spot, twice. (Yep, myth = false.) The strikes initiated a fire, which spread to a total of eight apartments. Having driven past it almost daily, I've seen the awful destruction...at least four of those places just completely useless. I imagine they'll demolish all eight of the units. Right now it's barracaded off, and I've seen the families come with their own cars and U-hauls to get whatever stuff they can salvage.

We don't know any of them personally, but it's still a sad sight to see. I hope they've found some shelter and such, and I hope no one was hurt by the incident.

That sucks! I hope the Red Cross or whatever is giving them donations. I sincerely hope that everyone there has renter's insurance, but usually that is not the case, (which is sad because usually it is as cheap as $25/month and covers the replacement cost of thousands of dollars worth of stuff if you get the right policy). I know it can't replace memories or lost people or pets, but it can get you back on your feet and a new apartment full of things in no time should something like this happen!:uhhuhuh:

I will keep them in my thoughts. I can't think of too many other things that would be as suddenly devestating and life changing. I hope they recover quickly and don't have lingering effects like nightmares or other losses.

Blessings and :hugz: to them and you, and thanks for posting,
Clair

I don't know that any group or organization is helping them out. I'd approach them to ask about things, but I'm afraid I'd frighten them or be stepping over a boundary.

I don't know anything about renter's insurance...and I don't know that we have it, either as the renters or as a complex. I'm clueless on those things, though.

No kidding. We get thunderstorms quite often in the heart of summer, and we've had people, buildings, &c. struck by lightning a little too often for my tastes. But, we are the lightning capital of the U.S....

I'm sure they appreciate the kind thoughts. Thanks for replying. :)
