This topic came up in another forum. Some are dealing with depression a bit more than usual now since it's more common in winter. I found this site a while ago when I wanted to help a friend who was very depressed. It broke my heart because she is someone who seems to be the least likely to fall into this dark place.

Banishing Depression
Ritual for Banishing Depression from Casting the Circle, typed in by Forestwife
You will need:
Goddess candle---White, once at center of the altar, or two at the back.
Banishing Candle---Black, placed at the left front of the altar.
Invoking Candle---Pink or red, placed at the right of the altar.
Incense---Sage, cedar, rosemary or pine at the beginning of the ritual, changed later to rose or amber. Burn loose herbs on charcoal blocks to do this.
Oils---Use Goddess or Altar oil on the Goddess candle; sage, pine or other banishing oil on the banishing candle; and rose oil on the invoking candle and for self-blessing.
Symbol Objects---Use a black gemstone for banishing, and a piece of rose quartz or a rose quartz pendant for invoking. Place the pendant on the altar and put it on before doing the self-blessing.
Matches to light candles and incense, charcoal blocks for loose incense, ritual wand (if used) to cast the circle.
Ritual Outline
Light candles---"Dress" the candles with the oils, working base to tip, (away from you) for the banishing candle and tip to base (towards you) for the invoking candle and the Goddess candles. Visualize the intent, banishing depression when handling the banishing candle, and invoking joy and self-love while "dressing" the Goddess and invoking candles. Light only the Goddess candles at this time.
Purify---Start the charcoal block and give it time to heat up. Sprinkle loose herbs of sage, cedar, rosemary or pine on the hot coal and use the smoke for purifing. Visualize the intent of the ritual, at this point visualize banishing depression and emotional pain, while smudging with the smoke. Then light the black candle from the Goddess candle.
Cast circle/invoke a Crone Goddess or Goddesses to help in banishing, and a Goddess of gentleness and peace for the invoking part of the ritual. Try Kali the Destroyer or Hecate for banishing, and Kwan Yin for gentleness and invoking. Use Goddesses for the five elements or these two aspects only, or whatever feels right. do a full casting and invoking to make the circle, or as informal invitation to the aspects and elements.
Invocation---Dear mothers of wisdom and grace, I invite you here to ask your help. I refuse my depression and choose to banish it, and ask instead for joy and peace of mind. Help me in my work tonight, Kali and Kwan Yin.
Body of ritual----Focus on the flame of the black candle, thinking of all the things that need changing. Remember fully all the reasons for depression and pain, acknowledge all your anger, all your rage, and all your fear. Dwell on every hurt, every feeling, every negativity. When you have focused them all onto the candle, shout "NO!" and blow the candle out in a decisive, quick motion. Watch the smoke rise from the extinguished candle, and feel all the negativity dissolving in the rising air. Breathe the banishing incense for awhile.
Now lighting the invoking candle. Do it from the Goddess candle, and sprinkle rose incense on the charcoal block. Let the light of the pink candle and the fragrance of the rose incense fill you as you watch and breathe them. Breathe the energies in deeply, remembering the qualities of Kwan Yin, or other Goddess'ess of mercy invoked in the ritual. Ask Kwan Yin for her presence and help.
Focus on the candle flame and think of all the good things in your life. Refill each banished item and negativity with some positive attribute; where there was pain before, replace it with love. For every wrong remember something to give thanks for; for every pain remember something joyfull. Remember your accomplishments in life, how good a woman you really are. Do a series of affirmations, "I am" or "I have", to list your good qualities and the qualities you choose to become or gain. Continue stating the positives and affirmations untill you feel filled with pink light and the scent of roses.
Self-blessing---Put on the rose quartz pendant or hold the rose quartz stone. Do the self-blessing ritual slowly and lovingly, anointing your chakras with the rose oil. Breathe the scent deeply and draw it into your body, emotions, mind and spirit.
Thank Kwan Yin for your joy and Kali for her energy of change.
Open circle/ground.
Allow the pink candle to burn out itself, or extinguish and relight it nightly untill at least the next Full Moon. Do affirmations nightly with the flame. Continue burning pink candles for as long as needed to remind you of new joy and positivity. Repeat the ritual on the next wanning moon if needed; it will be needed less each time you do it. Each time, bury the remains of the black candle in the earth, along with the ashes from the incense; visualize your pain being buried and recycled with them. Repeat the self-blessing at any time, and do it often, at least every New and Full Moon. Continue wearing the rose quartz pendant, or carry a piece of the stone with you at all times. Remember you are Goddess.
Do banishing rituals on the waning or dark moons. The day of Saturn (Saturday) is a good day to enter the labyrinth/unknown to change habits

I, too, suffer from chronic depression, so this topic is of great interest to me. Thanks for starting the thread, Freyja :)
This was posted to one of the e-lists of which I'm a member... I haven't tried it yet, but I am planning to use it tonight. The winter blahs have struck me early and hard. (I guess the 4" of snow we got on Friday morning is contributing to that, huh? LOL)
Depression Bath
Spell written by Rosewolf
You my pass this spell out to anyone as long as you show who has written it.
I know that everyone gets depressed once and a while. I am manic-depressive so I wrote this. I hope that it helps at least one person.
I am sending this to all my groups so I am sorry if you read this
more than once.
Things you need:
__ 2 or more white candles(I started with 2 and now I light up the whole bath room)
__ any calming essental oil(I use lavender)
__ sea salt 1\2 cup
__ a warm bath
__ calming music(optinal)
__ wash cloth or puff
Instructions:
1. Make sure that you will not be messed with.
2. Start music, if used.
3. Start bath.
4. Add sea salt.
5. Add 4 drops or more essental oil.
6. undress
7. Light candles.
8. get in bath(don't worry I won't watch LOL).
9. while you rinse your body with the wash cloth or puff. Chant:
"Salt and water merged as one,
Strongest purification of all,
Take away the weight of the world."
10. Keep chanting till you feel calm and clean.
11. Pull the plug, stand up, and chant:
"Salt and water your work is done,
All the evils of the day go down the drain."
12. Keep chanting until all the watier is drained.
13. Rinse with fresh, cool, clean water.
14. Clean up everything you used.
15. Keep the same candles that used, and use them everytime. They will charge with positive vibes. So when you can't take the bath you can light the candles and run you hands through some salt water.*

I hope that this helps someone.
Blessed Be, and may the Lord and Lady lead you to light.

Thank you for posting these, Freyja and Mareth. This has been a very bad year for me. The clinical depression I thought was long gone has returned with a vengance, in addition to the winter blahs, so much so that I am back on anti-depressants. I'm definitely going to try these. Is depression a problem for a lot of other members?

Is depression a problem for a lot of other members?
Personally, I've been struggling with depression since I was about 17. I'm 31 now, so it's been almost half my life.
I feel much better when I'm taking anti-depressants than when I try to deal with it sans medication.
Magickal methods of handling depression seem to work very well in conjunction with the prescription anti-depressants... at least for me.

I have been suffering depression just since earlier this year, I believe. I'm not sure as I've never gone to a doctor about it.
I do plan on trying these once I get the motivation. It's pretty bad when you have to have motivation to work on your depression. I find that winter brings me up moreso than spring.. as spring is when I have bad allergies.
But thank you for posting these. I will definately try them.

Here are some more ideas:
Overcome Depression Spell
Tools you will need are:
Protection Incense (herbs or oils work fine also)
Yellow 8" Taper Candle
This is best in a work area that you can leave untouched for three days. If you must put away your tools, try to at least keep your spell candle out in the open. This spell is used to uplift your energy and overcome depression. Read over this spell and customize it prior to use-the work will go much smoother.Prepare your work area by setting up any tools you may use. While setting up your area, concentrate on the purpose of your work. Imagine how good it feels to be happy. Do not let negative thoughts enter your mind! Just prior to your work, bathe in purification herbs, or with your favorite bath salts. While you are bathing, concentrate again on the purpose of your spell. Again, do not let negative thoughts enter your mind. After bathing, go to your work area. Cast a circle and light your incense. Envision a large, yellow ball of light surrounding you and your work area. Hold the yellow candle between the palms of your hands and direct all of your positive energy into the candle. Place the candle in its candle holder. Prior to lighting the candle, say(either aloud, or to yourself):
"This candle represents the love and energy I have for myself"
Light the candle and say (either aloud or to yourself):
"As I light this candle, the veil of darkness that is ever present in my mind is lifting. The darkness ceases to exist as the light of this flame glows. Long has the darkness filled my mind, my desire to be happy is intense like the heat of fire. As this candle burns, my spirits are lifting and the negative energy is washing away. I will be happy, my life will be peaceful. I can see myself as I wish to be-happy and free!"
Sit back and watch the candle burn. Meditate on how good if feels to be happy and envision the veil of darkness lifting. When the candle had burned 1/3 of the way, say:
"As the flame of the candle is extinguished-the light burns forever in my mind" and blow out the candle. Repeat this for two more nights. On the last night, after the candle has burned away and the leftover wax has cooled-throw away the leftover wax into to trash and envision your depression being thrown away with the wax.
Depression Spell
3 black candles
3 white candles
cedar chips rose petals, catnip, cinnamon
Go outside, somewhere where you can feel the air, and open a circle.
Kneel in the middle of the circle facing east.
Place the candles in a semicircle in front of you, and light each one.
On a fire proof plate, start a small fire of cedar chips.
Sprinkle rose petals, catnip, and cinnamon in the fire while saying:
Earth and fire, water and air
Hear my prayer, hear my prayer
Take this depression,
Take it away
Give me the strength
To face a new day.
When the fire dies down, splash a little blessed water on the fire.
Take the wet ashes, and throw them
as far from you as you can and say:
With these ashes go my pain,
From the healing fires,
New strength regained.
Thank the elements for hearing you, and close the circle.

Thank you so much for posting these. I am getting hit by SAD pretty hard this year. In fact I was just about getting ready to call the dr to get back on some meds, and I really didn't want to do that if I didn't have too. I'll try one or more of these and see how I do.
BB to all of you suffering as well.

(((((Chryssi))))))) This is the first year that SADD hasn't been too bad for me......probably because of that constant light that is Flar :)
Here's one to bring more joy into your life. BTW, this site has an excellent selection of all kinds of spells:
CALLING FOR MORE JOY (Submitted by Witchwoman 7/1/00)
Magic to call joy into one's life should be performed at the Waxing Moon. Get three cherry-red candles. Gather flowers, whatever kinds are in season, and decorate your altar with them. When you have viewed the Moon that
evening, light your three candles and dedicate them to the Fates. Joy is very much in their domain. Say:
"Red is my blood and red is my laughter,
Red is the color of life and of love.
Gracious Old Ladies, who weave in deep dark places,
Bless me with joy and bless me with luck."
Perform this honoring of the Fates three nights in a row, and burn the candles a little each night. The last night, allow your candles to burn down. For incense you can burn red clover. Once the spell is finished, dispose of it by taking a little bit of the candle dripping, dried flowers, and ashes from the incense to a living body of water, cast them in, turn your back, and don't look back.

I am so glad that this topic has come up. It seemed I was the only one to have this problem. I have also had depression since I was very young and have never been able to tolerate medication.
I know that magick has a lot to do with belief and attitude, that you have to be in the right frame of mind etc. and that you have to picture things as if they already are the way you intend them to be. What if because of depression, you have a very difficult time doing this. I won't do magick unless I'm feeling pretty good, but this seems so seldom. The depression, bad self esteem and lack of confidence so often get in the way. Does anyone else experience this?

Yes, Poz, I do. I thought I was the only one who felt that way. I don't do magick either unless I'm feeling good, but lately, that comes way too seldom. There haven't been any problems with my medication, fortunately. Still, I'd rather not take them if it's not absolutely necessary. Like you said, the depression, bad self esteem and lack of confidence do get in the way, but I'd like to be able to use magick to help these things get better. It's a dilemma.

I was diagnosed with depression when I was very young, around 10 or so. (I was diagnosed with stress when I was 5 because of my headaches). At 32, after my 3rd child, I was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. I have tried everything that medical science has to offer, but nothing works for more than a few months. (I think my body starts to fight the medication or something). Since I'm more often depressed than manic, I don't take Lithium any longer (too many side effects) and the other stuff never worked. Right now, I'm on Wellbutrin, but I'm only taking it to keep from smoking. It really worked for quitting, I quit for 3 months last year, then went off the Wellbutrin to try something else for depression. I started smoking again almost immediately. The new medication wasn't working anyway, so I went back on the Wellbutrin, and quit smoking again. This time I'm refusing to change meds, I've not smoked since March. But my depression is really bad. Not serious enough to try suicide again, but I have no get-up-and-go. I have other medical problems, so a lot of things are impossible for me. I can't take baths because I suffer from boils on my bootie whenever I do. I can shower just fine, but I've been doing that less and less lately. I usually end up just washing my hair in the kitchen sink. I am just about flat broke, I'm on SSI, my child support checks stopped for several months, and my son quit his job right before Thanksgiving. He still hasn't found another one, he's not even looking because someone told him they'd be hiring after Christmas. My child support checks have finally started again, I actually got two a day apart! My daughter was chosen for the local Jaycees to take on a shopping spree at K-Mart ($75.), and we got food stamps this month. Things that were so terrifying a week ago are looking so much better! But I still can't get up the energy to thank the Goddess with anything more than words. I want to do a ritual, it's important to me, to show how very much all this means to me, but I can't. I don't have the money for sea salt, or special herbs and oils. I've asked my kids to get me herbs for X-mas, with the little bit of money I'll give them to spend on me. But I don't know which ones to ask for! Do I want them to spend $6. on a little bottle of oil, and if so, what kind? Do I want herbs for money, (though my homemade oil seems to have done really well!), do I ask for herbs to thank and honor the Goddess and God? Do I ask for herbs to deal with depression? What about fear and negativity and insomnia? I am rambling on and on here, I hope you'll forgive me.

DEPRESSION HEALING RITUAL
author unknown, found on another list
Go outside during the daytime and find yourself a large tree. Oak is the best choice, but any large tree will do. (Deciduous trees are better than evergreens for some reason; go figure!) Place the palm of your projective hand (right if right handed, left if left handed) upon the trunk of the tree and say something like this to the tree: "Blessed tree, my brother (or sister) of wood, I am in great need of your healing. I feel hollow inside, as my depression grips at my very heart. I ask that you aid me, assist me in
healing myself of this. Please assist me to feel strong and solid inside, assist me in being happy again."
Now, sit down facing the sun and lean your back against the trunk of the tree. As you become more relaxed, feel yourself melt into the trunk, becoming one with the tree. Feel that you have become a branch, full of leafy foliage.
Feel the Sun beat down upon you. Drink in the Light of the Sun God. Feel His Love fill you, pushing your sadness into the tree. Fill yourself with the energy of the sun, and allow this to pass through you into the tree as well.
You are now part of the tree; you are the tree. Feel the overwhelming Wisdom locked into your wood, your leaves.
Feel all that it is to be a tree.
Now, slowly, feel yourself separate from the tree, becoming human again. Lean forward, and stand. Face the tree, and thank it. If you feel like it, give it a hug!
You and the tree are now one; you are the tree, and the tree is now you. Love the tree, and care for it. The better the tree is cared for, the happier you will be in the long run! And become one with the tree as often as you need to by performing the above ritual and enjoy! If you ever need to move far from the tree, explain this to it, and give it back the woody feeling inside, and it will give you back the human feeling it has. When you
move, find a new tree.
Also, if you can, whoever moves into the place you were in, if at all
possible, ask them to take special care of this tree because it has meaning to you.

You cant do a ritual because you dont have sea salt or herbs? I may be misreading this (it may be because of depression.) You can definitely perform a ritual providing thanks to the Gods without the use of salts and herbs. Perhaps the greatest gift of all would be a renewed spirit. You see good things starting to happen...well, embrace them and get ready for more good things.

I have suffered with depression for more than half my life (most of that time I did not even know it was depression, just thought I was going crazy). I have been on several medications and been to too many doctors to count. About 4 years ago, while going to one of these doctors and taking an anti-depressant I began to do my own research into depression, causes & effects, ect. I read alot of self-help books, but most of all I began slowly figuring out what triggers brought on the depression and one by one began cutting them out of my life...I hate to admit..including my own mother. It's been 4 years of learning to like me, learning what I am all about and I am still learning, but I am happy to say that I am off all medications, if I need something to help now, I look to herbs and homeopathic medications. I deal with life differently...it's no bed of roses but I try to make the best of what the God/dess have given me and to appreciate my surroundings, even in the rough patches I search with all my might to find one little ray of sunshine, one ounce of happy to keep from falling down into that depression pit once again. So far, it works for me. I am not saying I don't fall, because I do...but now instead of staying and sinking...I get up, dust myself off and say "tomorrow will be a better day", smile to myself and survive. Oh, my mother is slowly returning to my life (but just in little bits right now). I know what I can handle and what will throw me over the edge...I maintain the balance, instead of letting her or anyone control me, I have finally (after almost 40 years) learned to take control of myself.
Hang in there..life is worth living, just take it one day at a time, one hour at a time, or one minute at a time, what ever works best for you.
All my love to all of you,
Nissala

Against Depression
When you are really depressed or have sunk into deep apathy, light a pink candle and watch it for a while. This is a high-vibration color that will call in your reserve energy. Pink is the color of equilibrium.
If you have gained some psychic energy, a magical bath is the easiest spell to use. Scrub your tub with salt. Light some pink candles and set them around the bathroom. Put in a bathbag some melissa, sweet balm, and hyssop. You put the herbal bathbag under the running water and allow your bath to become a kind of tea for you to sit in. It will also smell heavenly. Rub the herbal bag all over your body to improve circulation by making the blood rise to the skin. Burn pink candles in the bath as well.
Just before you are ready to get out of the water but are not cold yet, say:
"By the power of the Goddess,
By the power of all of nature,
The stars, the clouds,
The rain, and the herbs,
I shall be healed,
I shall be healed,
I shall be loved,
It is done."
Do this seven nights hi a row if you have enough energy. Otherwise, just watch the candle, burn some sandalwood incense, and let it be.
Once you have become functional again without having to use heavy drugs, you will need to examine the reasons for your depression. Is the cause psychological or physical? If the former, you may have to change your life, take a big risk, make a choice, and move on. Depression is a sign that you are not on your spiritual path, your spirit is not being nourished. The
depression will return unless you take more power and put your life in better order. If that is impossible in the current environment, you must work for social change to create a situation in which it will be possible for you to flourish. Political activism is good medicine for a depressed person; you are constantly being reminded that your pain is shared by
millions.
If your depression is the result of a chemical dysfunction, however, make contact with a mental-health worker, preferably someone with social awareness. Avoid self-righteous doctors who would recommend electric shock treatments, heavy drugs, or brainwashing. Remember, your body can heal you with the aid of your spirit.

I found Neroli (a 1 oz bottle, 7.5% diluted in a base of grape seed oil) manufactured by NOW Foods at my local health food store for $12.99. It's got a lovely strong scent that makes me wonder if I could stand the smell of it undiluted....

That is such good news! I remember you telling me that the NOW company had an affordable rose oil - and I love the scent of Neroli so I will be asking for this the next time I visit one of the health food stores here that carries their products.

Witches' Spell-a-Day Almanac

Outside my front door, the yellow-crocus and snowdrops are blooming now. And the wrens are flying to my window box, wondering if it would make a good home; they know, like we do, that February is a time of renewal. Let this period of change inspire you to refresh your mind and your body with a health-boosting ritual.
To start, on your altar place a white candle in the center, then light it and say:
I light this candle to renew my spirit.
To the left, light a yellow candle, then say:
This flame fires my imagination.
Lastly, light an orange candle on the right while saying:
My body is strong and healthy.
Thank the candles, and extinguish them. Now you're ready for the season of light to return.
