Stumbled Upon this and have seen this subject come up more than a few times on the board so I thought I'd add this method to the mix.

I've used variations of both of these traps, and they do work very well!
I used a little cider vinegar in a long-neck bottle for the fruit flies. The fruit flies couldn't fly out of the bottle for whatever reason, and drowned in the vinegar. It worked very well, but I'll bet the paper funnel would work even better.
I put a mix of about a teaspoon to a tablespoon each of sugar and borax in a dry jar lid, and set it near my kitchen sink, where I have a problem with ants. This worked very well!

Yes, these traps work really well. I first heard about the apple cider vinegar one on BBC's "How Clean Is Your House." It's very effective!

If your worried about children and the borax, use instant grits.
Works like Alka-Seltzer and seagulls (not that i would know any thing about that of course).

Fly paper in the areas they frequent also works well for fruit flies, and it's like 2.00 for four rolls. We tried the traps and what not, but that was the only thing that worked well for us.

Thanks so much. My girlfriend's place is plagued with fruit flies. I can't wait to do this and get rid of them!
