We've been dealing with a lot here lately.. It's a bit overwhelming for me especially when we have to figure where the money is going to come from to take care of these problems..
First we had to get my car repaired (front cv axle and body work to the sides of the car) A friend of my dad did it and let s pay him weekly. (we still owe him 85) Then I broke down at my parents 2 weeks later in which the altenator went. (thankfully I made it to my parents house) Dad's friend fixed it as my brother lent us the 200 for that.. (45 of the 85 we owe him is for this) .
We go to inspect it the beginning of august only for it to fail and are told it needs a front driver ball joint and a break light switch.. Hubby has friend repair it which saved us a lot of $$ and it wasnt the switch just the bulb which was a relief.. we were able to go back to the mechanic who looked at it and have it inspected and he was puzzled that it was just the bulb!!
In the meanwhile weve also been fighting a battle with FLEA's!! Spraying, vacuuming(throwing the bag away), using baking soda and salt, leaving soap and water out to drown them..to no end. ( I KNOW that taking my cat to the vet is the best bet but because of the car repairs we dont have the money to take her) We've decided to bomb this weekend, have a cat carrier to take mia out with us..
My son shut off our fridge last weekend and we didnt figure it out until after a portion of our food went bad. We've had to take them both to an ENT doctor as well because of negative ear pressure. vinny's been battling an infection in his left ear.. I suspect they both may end up needing tubes eventually.. Hannah's also been put on medicine for her AdHd (which we've all seen a improvement in her behavior-she's noticed it too and surprisingly her hand writing is a bit better now )
So it's been a struggle.. my landlord refused to help us with the fleas because we have a cat, but is talking about charging us if we have to have them come out to shut our water heater pilot off. (were just going to do it ourselves and let our neighbors know about it -F&^K them! (yea im at fed up point with these fleas.. if we had the money i would move and let them deal with them!)
I had called them because I wanted to be cautious and not cause a fire and get an attitude from them instead.. My children and I cannot live like this!!
I just hope things get better and settle down for awhile. we've atleast got the car straightened out so im hoping there is light at the end of the tunnel and we'll be able to relax soon..

Thanks :hugz: I was able to find out that we can get frontline from petco and dont have to go to the vet to get her on it.. DH isnt sure whether we should bomb as we dont have anywhere to bring our Iguana.. We thought about shutting him in the bathroom in his cage, covering his cage and putting a towel in front of the door but were unsure that even that will work or not..

Hubby decided were not going to bomb this weekend but will get a few cans of spray instead. were going to spray tomorrow and bathe mia. Then thursday were going to Petco to get frontline if the spraying doesnt help.. Hopefully that will kill them and stop their cycle. then if we need to we will bomb.. What really makes me angry is the fact that maintenence had sprayed all the other apts during thw winter/spring but because we have a cat wouldnt do ours!! I even offered to remove her so they could do it.. You would think since they ALLOW cats they would get a friendly animal pestiside to spray! I think they do have eco friendly sprays..?

Thanks Everyone. :hugz:
we sprayed this morning and are hoping it works.. Getting the cat on
frontline thursday..
We tried to go to the beach in maine (york beach) while we were out waiting for the spray to dry/ apt air out and it didnt go well. The beach was PACKED and we couldnt find a spot and the parking lots wanted 20.00 to park!! Husband got really angry, screaming, etc and turned around and we came home.
Kids got icecream at friendly's though and we went outside and threw water balloons at each other that Hannah made last night and put in the fridge haha. That was fun. I was just disappointed that DH wouldnt drive to the pool. I wish we knew someone with a pool. Hannah is insisting once vinny is in school we need to rent a house where we can have a pool..

I totally spaced out on this, but I read here on MW several years ago when I was dealing with a flea problem that those who have ripped out the carpeting in their homes and have hard flooring don't have nearly the flea problems. Soon after that I got fed up with continually cleaning our off-white carpeting and ripped it out of the living room and hallway (still have it in the bedrooms) and put down tile flooring. Knock on wood but we haven't had a flea infestation since then. And that's with the cat deciding she'd rather sneak out the door and hide under the house in stormy weather - the poor dear is becoming very phobic about storms.

I was afraid that was the case but couldn't remember for sure.
I'm not sure steam cleaning the carpet will help - but it may be worth a try.
Some things I've heard very good things about - after a few flea-free years my memory was rusty - are Carbaryl Dust - generally sold under the name Seven - and Diatomaceaous Earth, which won't harm you or your pets because it's 'food grade safe.' You should be able to buy both of those at your local garden center.
Some information on how they work here. (http://www.getridofthings.com/get-rid-of-fleas.htm)
I have scratched myself bloody from flea bites - my whole family is very sensitive to them. I hope you find something that works ASAP.

So kids have head lice! EEK! Already got lice killing shampoo for their hair, did it last night.. Hannah had it in Indiana at my mother in law's
and I dont think all the eggs were killed.. It's not severe though and I didnt see many live lice.
Im trying soo hard to get everything organized, cleaned, sprayed and whatnot.
What have I done to deserve all this??!! I know that it's not my fault but im sure some of my family think we arent doing anything about it but we ARE.
so much that I had to go to a food pantry for food. Dh had 15.00 to his name this morning.

Tell you a little secret about lice, however now that school's started or about to I'm not sure you'd be able to do it.
Lice love clean hair.
They don't like oil buildup or dirt.
Now, school being in session soon I don't know if you'd be able to let the kids hair go filthy for a week or so or if you'd even want to.
(it would probably have to be longer than that, anyway for it to have an effect).
But it occurred to me, if you do still have time...a weekend or two to try it while they're at home and then leave it for the day or two...
I'm thinking vasaline or some other petroleum jelly liberally lathered onto the head, and then a towel.
Lice can't move through it and it suffocates them.
I wonder if another approach might be, say, olive oil (might be easier to clean out than the petro-jelly).
I suspect it would take multiple applications, over a few weekends to get rid of any new hatchlings from the eggs, but it might be worth a try.
I know a few people who have gotten ticks to let go that way...smother them in petroleum jelly....
I haven't heard of it being used in conjunction with lice, but that may just be the inconvenience/messy factor of it having to be left in the hair for a sufficient length of time.
:hugz: for everything, you do have a lot all at once..
Edit: did a search: apparently it is done:

Yes, I've heard that using corn oil or veggie oil or baby oil - coat the hair completely, cover with a plastic shower cap and leave on for at least 30 minutes - much cheaper and much less toxic than the special shampoos. Of course you already spent the money, but something to remember for next time. Kids do tend to pick up head lice at school.
Glad you were able to get enough food at the food pantry to tide you over till the next paycheck. Now take a few minutes and just breathe before you have to start combing all the nits out of the hair.

For your flea problem, get some tea tree oil. Put water in a spray bottle (plastic, not metal) and add a few drops at a time until you can smell it. Spray the cat with it, if you can get kitty to stay still long enough. Rub it into the fur. Then, take the spray bottle and spray all of the carpet, couches, chairs, blankets, anything that the cat might get on or touch. Do this every day, if you can, until the fleas are gone. Then, this can be used as a preventative, about once a week, on the carpets and such. Good luck!
Actually, if you can get the cat in the tub (good luck  ), put tea tree oil in the water and get a fine tooth comb and comb her out. It's kinda gross, but you'll see all the dead fleas coming off.
A caution, it's very easy to use too much oil. Make sure you only use enough to be able to smell it, too much more then that, and it can hurt kitty's skin.

Works well for ants, too. There's a spot in my garage they congregate on every so often (since the realtor cut down the main tree that was their nest). You might see one or two at the top of the crack...pour tea-tree laced water on it and thousands rupture out of there within seconds....I need to be more consistent in application.

we havent seen as many fleas.. have been spraying, vacuuming, throwing away the bag. washing bedding etc. were going to petco tomorrow for frontline for mia..
Dh tried making me laugh.. he said the flea's probably had a fight with the lice and the flea's left haha.
as for their toys.. should we bag them or? I figured we could bag stuffed animals or even put the in the dryer and vinny's blocks could go into a water/lysol solution..

I can try it.. I have allergys to some fragrances and also have sensitive skin..
I sell avon and bought some skin so soft and put alittle in her bath water last week.. I think that's helping.. poor mia.. dh actually put a bit much in her water so she had to have 2 extra baths the following days to get it all out.. (had to use a little dawn dish liquid to get the oil out) she HATES being bathed..
we bought hot shot no mess bombs/fogger's but havent used it yet. dh and I both are concerned it'll make the kids or one of us sick.. we have the same stuff but in a spray that we can spray the corners of the rooms and whatnot..

I do this exact same thing for lice. I put the tea tree oil in a spray bottle and spray it on Torias hair everymorning before school. Not once since we have been in school from preschool to starting 2nd grade have we had lice. I sware by it, although Toria hates it, I keep telling her she would hate the RID more LMAO

yea. It came from my mother in law's while hannah was in indiana..(the lice was from her daughter in law's daughter) She told me after we got the flea's that she has to bathe her dog 3x a month for flea's so we think she could have brought a couple with her when she visited in june.. I dont think we will be having hannah go next year..
We missed a friends sons birthday party yesterday . I apologized to her and told her we didnt want her children to get it. This summer has been a nightmare!! Im ready for fall!

Wanted to let you all know that things are going better now.. The flea problem is pretty much gone.. we sprayed the place several times, and got Mia on zodiac from petco. We couldnt afford to take her to the vet and they were out of frontline. We will be looking for it once were done with what we have.. We havent gotten bit in a couple weeks. I've seen a few stray flea's on her but they arent jumping! (probably die soon after they bite her.. still keeping an eye on Mia though.
Were still working on getting hannah lice free.. she still has some nits which I am working on picking out at night.(she doesnt always let me as she doesnt like sitting still) I will be doing another treatment monday before she goes back to school. Theyve let her go to school only if she keeps her hair up..
Hubby's also looking for a new job.. So I hope that goes well. He may drive bus (school bus) if they hire him.. I may have him take our son with him so I can work too! ( I would LOVE to be able to work even PT)

Glad to hear things are going better. Flea bites make me completely crazy, I can't stop scratching them.
OMGs, I hadn't stopped to think how lucky we've been (knock on wood) that Nove hasn't come home with head lice. She has Sensitivity Defensiveness and hates to have her head touched. We haven't been able to properly wash it for nearly three weeks. Just mix some shampoo in water and pour it over her hair and then rinse and repeat. There is no way she would let us put anything on her hair to kill the lice - much less let us comb out the nits for over an hour. What a nightmare that would be.
:weirdsmil Please Gods, don't let her pick up head lice!!!

I hope she never gets it too. I would NEVER wish this upon anyone.. She isnt letting us pick them properly half the time either. The comb doesnt work well for the nits, and Ive even been using the flea comb we had as its teeth are smaller/closer together than the comb..
She's off school tomorrow so Im going to sit us all down to watch a movie and work on getting more out.. :)

Unfortunately I've had experience with fleas and lice this summer...our cats are indoor only, we only have wood and tile floors, yet we were infested with fleas. My DH got some Ortho Home Defense spray from Home Depot and that helped a lot. Once it dries it's not harmful to pets or kids. As for the lice, they don't like tea tree oil so if you put a few drops in your shampoo that helps tremendously. Otherwise, combing is the best thing, since the eggs are stuck to the hair shaft. It's a pain, I know...I spent over 5hrs combing through my DD's hair on Sunday. She has really thick hair. *sigh*

I remember going through all that with my daughter years ago. And then her daughter got them - twice! But with two of us to take turns combing it wasn't so hard on either of us. Still hard on Katlin though.
Guess if Nove ever did catch them and couldn't return to school as long as there were still nits attached to the hair shaft - we'd have to start home schooling. Because she is super sensitive about anything touching her hair or her head it simply would not be possible to comb all the nits out. However, since she doesn't like to have her head touched and hates to brush or comb her hair - the chances of her picking up head lice is much smaller than with girls who borrow combs and barettes and hats from each other. *keeps fingers crossed*

Yea our cat is indoor only too. We havent seen any the past week or so and havent been getting bit.. We bought Zodiac from petco for her as well as batheing her with alittle skin so soft in her bath water..(1 cap full).
I've been picking them out one by one.. I heard that vinegar helps loosen the nits.. might try that when we can get to the store.

Im really upset tonight. Hannah told one of her friends and her mom that she has head lice. She did the right thing but I hate how they reacted and made her feel. She's not allowed over until their gone which I understand.
Her school has allowed her to school as long as she has her hair up and is being treated.. We are treating her hair every 6-10 days like reccommended and brushing/combing daily along with nit removal.
Im contemplating keeping her out of school until their gone
completely as she's afraid her friend with tell the kids on the bus, tell the kids at school and then she wont have any friends. She asked me .. mommy, why me? and cried which made me cry.
Meanwhile my husband says " you mean she still has them?. i thought they were gone and gets all defensive like im blaming him..
I have been doing all of the treatments, wash, vacuuming, etc. plus normal housework, taking care of his son, getting her ready for school and he gets to just go to work, come home, eat a meal I"VE cooked, play his xbox ,go on his Hugging computer.
Were seeing her therapist tomorrow night which im glad as im sure we all have things we need to talk about... This summer has been horrible and I just want to go crawl under a rock .

Hannah has been home sick the past couple days with a cold/virus. It's given me a chance to do more combing and nit picking (sounds funny haha ) . Today I made my own concoction for her hair.. I bought some suave naturals shampoo and put it in a sm bowl (about 1/2 cup) added 1/4 cup extra virgen olive oil, and then added roughly 2 syringes of tea tree oil. (about 8-12 drops) Mixed it all up to make my own dandruff shampoo. ( It turned from ocean breeze blue to a light green color.
I put a good amount on her hair and let it set an hour. we then lathered and rinsed good and follow that with a vinegar and water rinse.. when I combed her hair we only found ONE adult lice which was DEAD !!WOOHOO!! The rest (about 2 dozen ) were the small nymph lice dead also..
I added tea tree oil to the shampoo (only a few drops ) and we all will be using it daily.. The oil cost me 8.00 but I know it will last a LONG time haha It is very strong!
I'll repeat what we did today in about 10 days. I still saw some eggs but will be picking more out later.. we have to go out soon.
Does anyone know if the lice can live in mattresses?? My friend said we should get them new beds, pillows, etc but we dont have that kind of money.. we are going to wash all the sheets in hot water and dry, all their stuffed animals are in bags (have been the past week or so ) and we have sprayed their furniture here and there.
with the whole flea problem we had we are going to bomb this weekend. We havent been getting bit much but have noticed a few on the cat and want to be sure before winter that their all dead. My friend said it would work for the lice too..
to me my friend is overreacting with suggesting we throw away their beds.. we've already put A LOT of time and money into getting rid of these bugs.

Aw, I hope Hannah is feeling better soon, Nove was sick at the start of the week but is feeling better but not 100% yet.
No you don't have to replace your matresses. Just wash the bedding and the pillows if possible. I know they make a lice spray that you can use to spray her mattress and your sofa/chairs, but we never needed to do that.

Yea thats what I figured too.. Were only using two fogger's tomorrow. one at the livingroom door and the other one at our bedroom door.
Im washing and drying sheets tonight, getting other clothes put away, have to bag Olivia's things up and take with us. (not chancing any of her things being ruined) cover Dh's bookcase, unhooking the computers, covering the iguana's cage. We are taking him out in a tote and mia out in her carrier. Im just unsure where i'll go with them..
