View Full Version : Differences between Lilith and Lilitu

Yeah there are differences. Though my thought to divide the two stems more from the focus on the Jewish Lilith being a succubous and defying Adam who wanted her to be below him.
And Lilitu being just a demon of infant mortality.
Anyone else agree with this idea? To divide the two demons, since we don't equate Adonis and Adoni, no matter if they were once the same or not, Like Adonis, Lilith is a reinterpretation of the Lilitu demon and is different on her own.

I think there is a difference, but, the way I see it is this, the Lilitu demons are a minor Mesopotamian demon species, Lilith is one member of that group who managed to go rise up and become (in)famous, even into the levels of Godhood, and become a kind of demonic Goddess, so, IMO, they are different - the Lilitu are a group of demons, of which Lilith was/is a member, while Lilith is an individual demon/Goddess who arose out of that group.
Hope that made some sense :).
Also, cool thread.

I have to agree with David. Lilith is a named Lilitu demon but is still just a deamon. To me that would equate to the notion of Brunhilde as the leader of the Valkrie. Brunhilde is the most famous of the valkrie, but she is still one of the valkrie.
I see Lilith as probally a demon that was associated with killing babies in a time when infant mortality was great. As such she would be seen as more apparent and present and her legend would carry into the early Hebrew lore.

Thanks, and it's something me and you probably know a lot about, as we both have Mesopotamian backgrounds, and I hope you're feeling better now :hugz:.

BTW, one article that I like about the evolution of Lilith is:
'Lilith: From Demoness to Dark Goddess' by Aaron Leitch (http://kheph777.tripod.com/lilith.html)
IMO, it's one of the best articles on her, I don't agree with everything he says, but, I do think it shows who Lilith is, how she has evolved, from a minor demon in demon species, to a dark demonic divinity.

She was Ishtar's enemy, now she can identify with her, quite a long journey on her part. I gotta read that. I like reading stuff like that, no clue why. I think i have a book addiction.
