Okay, here's my question - there are a number of times that these cards come up in readings when I am aware that they aren't meant to represent a person. So do you have particular meanings for the face cards when they don't reference people? Especially the Kings and Queens, as those are the ones I often have some issues interpreting. . .

In the most generalized fashion:

Pages usually have news of some kind of interest to the Querent.

Knights usually tell of changes coming and going and the condition of the horse tells how fast or how soon; the particular Knight also bespeaks of the type of change.

The Queens and Kings are the hardest of the four Court cards since they work on multiple levels, usually simultaneously. the Kings and Queens usually do represent people most of the time, but they also represent personality types - and can be the Querent, or someone they haven't met yet.

The Q & K also can represent situations. The Following excerpt is from my yet-unpublished book "It's All in Their Cards" :

THE QUEEN OF WANDS

THIS IS A CARD ABOUT ENDURANCE, MAINTAINANCE, AND SURVIVAL.

The Queen sits in state on her throne holding symbols of her nature-her flowering wand and a sunflower. Some see her as a woman who lives in the country or 'close to nature'. Much has been made of her black cat - a symbol of intuition , but also the 'sinister' aspect of Venus! This aspect is more dominant when the card is reversed and the cat appears at the 'top' of the card and can be read as an indication of jealously or infidelity.

UPRIGHT PERSONALITY
This Queen is affable, cordial, intelligent, a little aggressive, enthusiastic, motivated and outgoing. Underlying her, though, is the fact that she is the element of Fire and has a firey temperment! Little flashes of this will appear even when she is in a good mood, so don't be surprised. As the Querent, she indicates that they have the qualities within them to succeed.
example: knows a great deal about many things and likes to share them with others. The head of the garden club or PTA; the head librarian.
situation:This Queen indicates that now is a good time to move forward in a business venture.

REVERSED PERSONALITY
When reversed we see her firey tempermant in all it's glory. this Queen becomes forceful, overly tempermental, strict, and domineering. As the Querent she is pushy and arrogant.
example: the person who says 'If we dont do this MY way, I'm taking my bat and ball and going home.' The lazy person who mops a floor only because they have been told to, but doesn't move anything and mops around obstacles.
situation: This Queen is a discretionary warning to be careful in all business dealings- particularly with another woman; avoid giving offense; and be aware of deception (remember that black cat!)

Better now?

Tarotbear that does help.:) I've often had ALMOST the same question as Azure. I would have phased it as "How do you know when a card is representing a person." It dawned on me not too long ago that the Queen and King are supposed to be representing a person - but I didn't feel comfortable thinking that they ALWAYS had to represent a person. And your post helped out alot.:D
