I've been told many many times that when aquiring a tarot deck, it's unwise to buy it yourself. Can anyone tell me why? My first deck was given to me by my cousin (The Witches' Tarot, I believe, or Tarot of the Witches-- I can't remember which at the moment) but I also purchased The Elemental Tarot and Sacred Path cards myself. I don't see what the big deal is with buying a deck oneself, especially since I've had better results with my Elemental than with any others, and it's the deck I use most. Can anyone help? :)

This according to what I have been handed down by ancestors' word of mouth to my ears is the story behind that--it is made up by the gypsies (yes direct descandent of them) to "others" (ones outside the gypsy inside domain) to keep the mystery and the knowledge from falling into a "commoner's hands" for these were part of the skills used to keep them from having to work in a factory or even worse be a slave to a rich man.
So it is perfectly fine and acceptable to purchase a deck yourself if you so desire.
Hope this helps.

It does, very much, thanks. :) That's really interesting.

I've also heard this. My theory though is so one could mentor the student, know if they are serious or not.
I didn't have any of my decks given to me. I've purchased my own and I've learned on my own.

Same here. I've got my Dragon Tarot, and am hoping to get another deck, possibly make my own. Anyone have any idea's for the background of the cards, like the 'paper' to make them on??

Well I too am thinking of making my own deck... I thought I'd paint them and all and then put them in the laminator, that way they will stay nice and "newlooking" for a long time. I know that some stores sell Montessori material and they've got both paper cards and laminator plastic film in a size that might work.

I bought a blank deck at a New Age store - I think you can get one from US Games. www.usgamesinc.com
I also think the idea of 'receiving' a deck goes back to the dark days before you could walk into 'just any' bookstore and buy a deck off the shelf - one had to know one and they had to know 'where' to find a deck in those days before 1950 when witchcraft laws were still on many law books.

I have about fifteen decks last time I counted, and only one of those was bought for me, and, funnily enough, that is the only deck I have found impossible to read!
I really believe that if you are wishing to read Tarot accurately, then you should be the one to buy the deck, as only you will know what feels right for you. I have found the Halloween Tarot by US Games is a fantastic deck to work with, as the illustrations on both the major and minor arcana literally shout the meanings out to you. My favourite deck! And the illustrations are cool!!
