View Full Version : Anyone tried rune meditation?

In other words, connecting with the rune itself on a cosmic level :) It's very cool...just tried it myself and learned some neat stuff. Didn't know if anyone else here had tips/advice they could share, or just general techniques? :)

I think I reached cosmic level on a Tuesday once, but it was raining so I didn't want to go too far outside.
Although I have a rune set I made myself, I like working with rune cards better. Darn, I thought I had a picture. I'll be back. . . .

What's that first sentence about? :S It seems odd :P
I don't have any rune cards - just use my head :)

What do you mean you don't have cards??? Can we rectify this oversight or are you to be bereft of magic forever more???
Zounds, if you had a deck you could put the rune (mine are hand-dyed and painted bone) on the card whilst meditating on it.

Okay, back.
I like these images, some of them are really different. The black and white deck by Tony Linsell and Brian Partridge has fabulous artwork.

The lady who did up the Quantum Power Runes is a life coach. She seemed to want to smoosh in everything: physics, runes, yoga, and the colours of the rainbow, but they are rather charming--printed on glossy business card stock and now out of print I think.
People are inventive!
I'm trapped in a hole with a bunch of fundies lol...I don't want to impinge on their space but I am thisclose to ordering a set of divination runes...or making my own :) I don't think my parents would mind terribly. I could also do rune cards with index cards...that'd be easy. The system of runic meditation I was working with - from the Futhark book, by Edred Thorsson - doesn't necessarily require a set of cards, but it would sure help :)
I don't think I like those cards you showed me lol...they're not fluffy but...what's the word? Not heavy metal enough :weirdsmil I'd go for a blank card with a red-painted rune personally XD

Well...
Of course...in my Tradition...
But if you are talking about Edred Thorsson...
Or so called "Norse" runes...no , I would not
qualify for your idea of "cosmic" contact...
I have worked with Runic , and Obri symbols
for many years , on many levels...
What do you want to know ?
Can you rotate them in your mind ?
Different speeds ?
Can you create bind runes in your mind ?
In how many dimensions ?
Can you create runic topological flow patterns ?
( Taking a rune , and without breaking lines ,
create many shapes from one base form ...:uhhuhuh: )
Can you visualize the rune , in its many layers
of meaning , and experience those energy states ?
Can you vibrate the rune , for an hour , while
holding the shape in your mind ?
Can you project the rune , into the astral field ,
and follow the course of it's journey ?
Hmmm...I could continue for awhile...:smileroll
So...what do you mean...cosmic level ?

Lol wow...nowhere near close to that. I'm more referring to the way there are said to be cosmic versions of the Norse runes, existing independently of the written symbols we use...say Sowilo is the "ideal" of power and strength, a symbol of the Sun, etc. And when you make contact with that rune, you have an open channel of wisdom to it...I'm just not sure if I made cosmic contact, but I learned from it :)
Then again, Futhark makes some odd claims at times :P I do think it's an awesome book, though. Your stuff sounds cool as well...you are much more skilled than I :D

Let us take Sowulo...
What I know as Seal...
Meanings , among 77 levels...
Sun , safe sailing , safe journey , great energy and life force...
See the lightning bolt ?
Feel it...smell the ozone...hear the crackle , and the crack...
Feel your hair stand on end...see the sky illuminated...
Now...shift perspective...
Curve it , put it inside a circle...
Starting at 11 o'clock , down to 9 , across to 3 , down to 5...
See it as the "Wakan Tanka" symbol...
Now...put it under your feet...make the "S" of Seal , hard...
Thus a "Z"...thus Zeal...
See the symbol as a plasma rotor , circling up through your
body , clearing energy , and filling you...
"Zeal , Zeal , Zeal , Zeal , Zeal , Z , Z , Z , Z , Z , Z"
Now...shift...
Hold your right hand , index finger extended , by your right
ear...
Thrust your finger forward , then back , then forward , in a
Seal / Sowulo shape...you are sending energy in a certain fashion...
Now...shift...Seal / Sowulo , is an "S" rune value...
See the serpentine river ?
A healthy river , follows this course...become the river...
Learn all you can , from it...
Now...shift...
See the serpent moving across the ground ?
Hear the hiss ?
Sssssss...
Become the serpent...
Now...shift...
See the belly dancer move back and forth ?
See the rune as the "S" ?
Does she have great energy and life force ?
Feel what that does to your blood , and libido ...
Now...shift...
See the martial arts throwing blade ?
Throw it...see it spin through the air...
It cuts all in it's path...
You see...this is just the beginning of one rune...
And these are a *few* of my favorite things...

To further Sowulo , and the "S" letter value...
See the "S" , on Superman's shield ?
What is his energy level ?
Hear the steam , or heated liquid ?
Safe sailing ?
How does a boat have to move , with a sail ?
Is it always a straight line ?
If you are a football player , or playing tag , or
any movement game to the other side...zig - zag ?
Now...Seal / Sowulo , is also made of two Leguu / Leguz
runes...thus two waves...
And they are one up , one down...study the sun , and
the loops of energy , as waveforms , in it's life...
Continue...with any rune in this fashion...
More S's...lol :) You have me almost about to go do some meditation now, rather than waiting :P

So rather than some sort of mystical thing, you can just connect the runes in a concept-to-concept form...like actually thinking, not meditating. That I like - need to learn my runes so I know how to work with them in that fashion :)

I teach my IRL students , to focus on two main
methods , when working with energy in general ,
or runes in particular...
Awareness ( body oriented ) and Consciousness ( mind oriented )...
How does that rune *feel* ?
As well , all the mind excercises...
( and how it feels doing them...)
Of course , there occurs a middle way experience , when worked
with , in the fullest extant...:uhhuhuh:

Feeling is something I've never gotten the hang of...I always know how an image or impression or thought is during meditation on a rational level but gut feelings beyond impressions I'm not used to :/

 Anyone tried rune meditation?I have mediated with runes for a long while now. There are many ways I go about it.
is the type of Rune meditation where I focus on a particular rune and see what comes to me.
is the type of Rune meditation where it involves rune magick. Where I visualize a particular rune or bind rune that was chosen for the spell I am doing.
is the type where I use the Rune sounds and chant until I zone out as it were and see what the Runes have to tell me.

Ah, dear old Edred (whose real name has escaped me) is a complete crackpot who has tacked on his own associations and assumptions to runes. Yikes. Stuff like that is a personal religion that someone has made up.
I hesitated to say my opinion but it's important when you're learning to have balance.
Discernment is important to develop when reading. It's good to have enthusiasm and explore but be wary of believing some of the crazy credos. I have the goofy Rune Cards by Ralph Blum who has himself been criticized for making things up, but I like the artwork.
I have an interesting book called An Introduction to English Runes by R.I. Page which is historical rather than personal fantasy. I bought that when I bought the Linsell cards as they are Anglo Saxon runes rather than Futhark.
Anyway, not to put a damper on you, Shawn Blackwolf seems to have some good ideas for exploration.
Index cards are a marvelous idea--amazing what an in-your-face bold symbol can bring out.

I'm using a pack of Anglo Saxon rune cards. I consult them and ask them questions as some people would with tarot. I don't know if this is working but some of the answers make me feel a coldness (a pleasant cold) because it spells out the answers to me. Other times I can't make sense of what its saying. I also use runes to help me decide on a name or to answer a puzzle (not a quiz type puzzle from a game but a mystery from my past). Often the answers suggest I must look forward. The runes point out there's nothing wrong with me and I would be better off looking forward, growing within, gaining confident but it doesn't pinpoint on how. This is what I must find. The runes don't always give direct answers but offer clues and sometimes advice.
I'm having to keep referring to the manual because I can't remember the symbols very well. I've always had a problem with mathematics and I find learning the runes a similar thing. With maths I use a calculator. Perhaps it could be the same principle?
The booklet says women are supposed to find the runes easy. Sometimes I use the runes and I can't understand what they're telling me.
I've been trying to take up runic yoga. My boyfriend has done this, and he's gone through all the sessions of runic yoga although I found this difficult, as I had to make rune sounds but I couldn't keep the notes long enough.
As much as I want to learn about the runes, I'm not grasping it very well. However, I find it much easier to draw cards when I ask very simple questions.

Is he? I know a lot of his stuff is different...and I could care less for his Ceremonial Magic technique or his "ancient rune wizards" mythology...but there are some gems in there. Like the signing and sending technique, for example. Just because something's UPG doesn't mean it doesn't work like a dream - that's one opinion I share with chaotes :)
That said, I agree with you...he's not historical at all :P

That's great, part of exploration is finding what works for you. As many people have said here, they read things and then through their own interpretation and experience, find a system of their own, or perhaps adapt a system of their own might be more accurate.
You seem to have your head on straight; it's always good to think for yourself.
I run into tons of people who believe everything they read, it's a bit scary how people will latch onto things as Truth Inviolate. The latest and greatest author is okay I suppose as long as you keep your own ideas, concepts, and techniques, and sift it all together.

Yeah :) I kinda synthesize my own stuff...it seems to work pretty well. My stupid 15-year-old "Odinist" friend has more luck with signing and sending than I do lol...damn Nazi teenager :(
Thanks - I think for myself even if I fail in the attempt :P

One would think!
I have found tarot forums to be rife with dogmatic, rigid thinkers who enjoy browbeating and bullying. Any disagreement on policy seems to bring out the worst in them, and if the noted author of the month says it is so, then it must be so. Cliques can be very unpleasant. Yikes.
I generally like to hear about other people's approaches even if it's not something I do. Makes life interesting--opens your eyes to how other people live.

Well that's a maxim I've heard lol...sounds like a mess with the tarot forums. However, that's just the way our beloved Internet is...don't think it's as much pagan forums as web nerds like me, only meaner :P
I like to too - I never know if I'm gonna learn something I can use, even. It's a big world out there, and as much as I've learned in the last few months I'm only beginning to scratch the surface :)

You know, One of my many interests has been to connect with the runes on both a spiritual and physical level. The methods I've explored ranging from the new agey and kinda fluff filled all the way back to almost barbaric and crude. Those that I have attempted so far, very few. Meditation has never been my thing, when one has the attention span of a squirrel on speed, even sitting still is a challenge sometimes. I personally haven't found my goal, and may never, but I also believe that each person's path to their goal is different, especially in this age. So many people, of conflicting belief systems attempting to revive a language that for ages has been carried on only by word of mouth and crumbling stone tablets tend to muddle things. However, I wish you luck in al that you attempt. Lady luck is at least one being I personally can put faith in.:toofless:
Edit: I am at present too tired to read through everything, but girlread, in your early posts to this topic, you put a lot of importance on having rune cards. I personally find placing too much dependence on objects to be detrimental to spiritual pursuit. Your thoughts?

Now that I've had opportunity to sleep some..
Yeah, I've a lot of ideas I often get scoffed at for. I remember one guy even demanded I outright halt my research into the runes a few years back. But then, he was always a fool. A devout catholic who believed he was an incarnation of Loki. I've always been of the school of "Actually DO something to get results." With runes, I look at that and something in me goes "Hey, I can do that." Although admittedly, a lot of the scoffing has been at my curiosity toward the three other sets of runes mentioned in the norse mythos, the sets given to dwarf, elf, and giant.
I read a book once, called Mr. Norrell and Jonathan Strange. It was of course fiction, but it had an interesting theme, with the 'wizards' of england being a bunch of philosophers who read about magic and argued about it, but never actually did anything, for whatever reasons they may have had. They were of course, horrendously appalled by the arrival of a 'practical' wizard, who actually got results. That isn't too far off from Real life in that sense. A lot of people arguing on how to do things, with only a few actually doing it. I've got a bit of respect for 'chaos' worshippers, so quoted because they aren't entirely chaotic, just a bit twitchy at times. They, from what I've seen are nothing more than practicers of numerous arts without limitations. They don't decide "I'm not going to do that because people won't like me for it." The way I figure, if I wasn't meant to do something, then I won't be able to. :bigredgri
Perhaps, if one can truly realize the meaning of all runes, beyond simple symbolism and such, they can become attuned to the forces of the cosmos themselves.

A devout Catholic who thought he was an incarnation of Loki? Whaaaa? Not that Loki wouldn't incarnate as a Catholic just to tick off Thor :p
Also, I never knew about those sets. Quite interesting...I wonder what they're like. Probably not of use to humans, though :p

So true - how many of us never really do anything, even outside of the occult? :) And the only limitation is Will - Chaos Magicians are often smart enough to realize this :)

Aye, my reason behind using the runes as an access to the cosmos is more my own beliefs. There is a rune, or runes for all things known and unknown. I mean only ever to use them as tools, and that the runes, as a tool appeal to me. Much the same as a carpenter's tools and a blacksmith's tools are different, and you hand either the other's tools and they wouldn't be as effective with them. Essentially, I think that no matter the tool you use in your path, anybody with the right state of mind, the correct application of will, and knowledge of the tools at their disposal can become more than human. I wouldn't say ascend, mostly because I like my physical body and ascending normally means giving up the physical, but attain something higher, even if it's mere understanding.

This reasoning is most correctly correct. It's your own Will that the tools are an extension of - what appeals to you might not appeal to someone else. Now me, I'm a metalhead with pretensions of rugged badassery. The runes are right for me - but the Qabalah also appeals to my pretensions of pretentious scholarship :p Depends on the day
