From yesterday's Lexington Herald-Leader:

Power Plants

Nuclear ~ Stremline licensing, relicensing procedures; renew law to protect reactor owners from unlimited liability for major accidents; offer tax credits to spur more electricity production.

Coal ~ Increase research funding for "clean coal" technology to limit pollution and carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired plants.

Bush says ~ "New reactor designs are even safer and more economical than the reactors we possess today."

Distribution

Gas Pipelines ~ Build 38,000 miles of new pipelines, relax environmental regulations fore new pipeline permits.

Electric Lines ~ Give Federal Energy Regulatory Commission the power to force citizens to sell land to the government to speed construction of power lines.

Bush says ~ "If we fail to act, Americans will face more and more widespread blackouts."

Conservation

Efficient Cars and Homes ~ Offer tax breaks to people buying energy-efficient vehicles such as gasoline-electric hybrid cars; increase grants for insulation of low-income homes.

Bush says ~ "We've yelled at each other enough. Now it's time to listen to each other and act."

Drilling

Exploration ~ Allow drilling in: 2000 acres of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, parts of the Rocky Mountains and Gulf of Mexico, other public lands.

Bush says ~ "We must work to build a new harmony between our energy needs and our environmental concerns."

Refineries

Lesson Restrictions ~ Ease environmental laws for obtaining new construction permits; review clean air rules governing refinery improvements to see if they unduly limit capacity increases.

Bush says ~ "As long as cars and trucks run on gasoline, we will need oil."

Opposition

Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle ~ "Incredibly, we're told we may be heading into a summer of $3-a-gallon gasoline and rolling black-outs, yet the Bush-Cheney plan offers virtually no immediate relief."

I grew up in and still live in "coal country". Trust me, there's no such thing as clean coal production or consumption. Ever heard of Black Lung? Ever lived near a coal-fired electrical plant? Ever seen a coal train?

Bush says ~ "New reactor designs are even safer and more economical than the reactors we possess today."

I'll believe that when I see it. Where are they going to put the waste? Under the mountains in Harlan County again? The current plan here in Central Kentucky for "water storage resevoirs" is flooding the abandoned mines in Eastern Kentucky with water. Big mistake, that. Ever heard of mine slurry, among other coal waste? As well, and the general public doesn't know this ~ but you can bet that private industry/investors does/do ~ but when they were building The Bomb in Oak Ridge, all that nuclear waste was taken by train into Harlan County ~ and was subsequently buried in the old mines there. And they want to use that for our consumable water? Hell no!

Gas Pipelines ~ Build 38,000 miles of new pipelines, relax environmental regulations fore new pipeline permits.

IMHO, this whole thing has GreenPeace written all over it.

Bush made many promises to Texas businessmen... if ever elected, he would make them rich.

These types of increases was, well, expected.

He got votes, that is all I can say... sorry America.

Well, yes, he did...

Florida would not have been an issue if the race were not so close. Nearly half of America voted for Bush, no matter how you slice it.

NO, thats wrong, nearly half of VOTING American's voted for Bush! A HUGE portion of the populace DID NOT VOTE! Shame on them!

!!!

The apathy makes me ill!

and the conspiring to keep people from voting, especially in Florida makes me ill

I live in MA, and for the first time I chose a party affiliation (democrat), when I went to vote, I wasn't on the voter list!!! Things that make you go hmmmm....
