(CNN) -- The 12-year-old girl plucked cold, slimy potato peels out of the garbage containers in a village in eastern Poland. When those trash scraps became scarce, she ate clover.
Crumbs and decomposed food sickened Betty Potash Gold and her family members, causing diarrhea and bloody vomiting, as they hid from the Nazis.
Although Gold lived through extreme hunger, mental duress and near-death experiences during the Holocaust, she and other survivors face another peril decades after the war.
"Jewish survivors of World War II who were potentially exposed to the Holocaust were at a higher risk for cancer occurrence later on in life than those not exposed," concluded a study published in the November issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Intense calorie deprivation, such as what Gold experienced, has long-term effects on survivors, said Dr. Micha Barchana, one of the study authors.
"We know that people who went through the Holocaust suffered severe calorie restriction," he said. "Calories they were taking in were 200 to 800 in this period."
Although studies with rhesus monkeys and mice suggest that limiting calories conferred cancer-protecting benefits, this study showed the opposite effect. People subjected to the intense caloric deprivation, especially at an early age, had greater likelihood of cancer.

Balance!!!

IMO this shows that balance is the key. To much of anything can be bad for you.

Yes to much happiness is bad. If your always happy even when the situation doesnt call for that emotional reaction then the questions could be...
denial?
emotional imbalance?
lack of conscious?
delusional?
lack of emotion?
illness be it physical or mental?

Emotion is a reaction to a stimulus and even that can be broken so happiness can be a sign of something broken too, just as extreme sadness can.

To be fair its hard to be balanced when being hunted down by the rest of your country. I mean they didn't have much of a choice.

I know that!!!
The article is pointing out that lack of cal intake is bad too.
IMO, the article was using the survivors as the example because they have made it possible for this info to be proven. They were the study.
There are a lot of people in the world that have extremes happen that go through starvation.
This study proves the long term health effects.

Some people actually do choose to starve themselves. This study may help them change their minds.
It may help doc spot potential probs in all sorts of people that had periods of starvation, through no fault of their own and do to their own choices.

I'm just saying IMO it sends the message...balance.
Dont stave yourself if you have choice. Its bad for you.

These news articles can bring positive change to the people who read them. :hahugh:

If we're talking aneroxia, just in my personal experience, I doubt it. Nothing, not even fear of cancer stopped me at least. However, maybe I'm wrong. :)

these studies are getting rediculous..

we are all just trying to get by at this point (some of us) and then there are peope who get PAID to sit and be armchair anylists while humanity suffers.

just all seems a bit idiotic and lacking in compassion..

when someone is dealing with an emotional trauma the last thing on their mind is some stupid happiness meter survey.. lol

edit..
No offense meant to Sacred and Shanti but I just find all these a waiste of resource and energy that could be used for more productive means like feeding a hungry family.. or instead of pointing at someone and saying they are anorexic put down the therapy manual and just love them for who they are..
