We've been cutting down for a while but today is the day. is half two in the afternoon and so far I've been ok - but I phoned the OH and he's not. It's always him that makes me crack and buy a box of cigs. Help!

Thankyou :) I quit for three months last year (NYE ruined it for me)

I find nicotine replacement products make it harder to quit - three days cold turkey is far easier - like ripping off a plaster - get the worst part out of the way as quickly as possible!

Ouch, that sounds pretty painful, but maybe the only way to go!
Good luck with giving up!!
Much respect to you!:fpraise:

Good luck to you! This is something I've struggled with for quite some time, so I understand how difficult it can be.

I've just sent the OH a three page text asking that he be more supportive this time as it's hard enough fighting cravings and I shouldn't have to battle with him pressuring me too.

The second he says "let's just buy one box of ten and quit tomorrow" that's it - me and the dog are off out for a long walk without him.

As a former smoker I Say congrats to you both and wish you all the success in quitting :) And as for your idea of quiting cold turkey that is what I did, and ya after the third day things do get better it is just a case of keeping your self or your hands busy as to not be tempted in reaching for a cigarette :D

http://www.mysticwicks.com/images/theme_images/fall09/buttons/collapse_thead.gif (http://mysticwicks.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=4094056#top) Ah why does he make you crack? You are in control of your own actions so how does he make you do this? You need to have some self control there and put your foot down. I know it is hard but you can do it and if you do have relapses do not worry just get back up and try again. :hugz:

See my above post about him pressuring me. If I was 100% in control of my own actions I wouldn't have to worry about this addiction. lol

It's all very well saying that he needn't influence me but on a practical level when you have an overgrown child throwing tantrums at you or behaving like the nagging devil on your shoulder it's 1000000 times harder to quit.

My dog will be my biggest support over the next few days I think.

It was hard but I was able to do it and I bet you can as well.

Also you know what you can do about cravings eat a mint candy of some kind, and try to smoke something if the taste does not turn you away I have no clue what will :)

Stick to your guns, good luck and enjoy your walk :)

Yes that is true :)

Gee I can see why you have issues I could just imagine how you both are having the withdrawls. :hugz:

LMFAO I barely notice my withdrawals until I go home - I've never met anyone who suffered from nicotine withdrawal as badly as David does. Maybe I should be asking everyone to concentrate on sending energy to him?

I'm also making an announcement at the moot tomorrow that we're quitting so that nobody offers either of us a cigarette!. I am determined to make this as easy on him as possible and therefore as easy on me as possible.

This might end up becoming my quitting ranty thread. Sorry.

I phoned him as I never got a response to my text asking that he be more supportive and he said "but I need a cigarette I haven't had a cigarette sinc..." this is the point at which I took the phone away from my ear until I could interupt him to say that I was hanging up because his comments were the opposite of supportive.

He doesn't even make me angry any more - it makes me sad. I need him to grow up because I need help too! :(

Here we go again. This is the last time - I have quit forever, I can feel it!

I've really enjoyed the last five days!

2 ways my friends have quit are Chantix (wonder drug) and "stepping down"
ie: Marlboros to lites to ultra lites to the patch, to the gum.....

then think of licking a gross old stinky ashtray every time you think of lighting up!

BEST OF LUCK!!!!!

I know how hard it is, I'm in the process, as well. Though I don't even have the pressure that you do, just my habit. Its like when I have no cigarettes its harder, because when I do have a pack I feel like I can quit and that I don't need them, but then I finish the pack and just need ONE MORE.

I considered taking an oath to just quit, but I'm a little frightened to do that as I am oathtaking is serious business and if I buckled under the pressure, that would be a huge shame.

I feel like I need something to keep me busy when I have the urge, but not sure what that would be.

Well, best of luck to you! And may I catch up soon! :)

Champix worked for him the first time. This time he's got inhalors on the NHS :)

No pressure to smoke this time round as the OH has agreed to quit. Replacing your habit with one that's not a cigarette (gum, bottles of water, chew a toothpick etc) is helpful when trying to quit.

You should read this book: http://www.allencarrseasyway.com/ I know loooooooooads of people who have quit just like that after reading it.

Lots of "keep going" energy coming your way, you are doing brilliantly. I know EXACTLY where you are coming from, I've given up both times I was pregnant and breast-feeding... last time I was off the horrible cancer sticks for two years - and then fell off the bloody wagon again. Hubby smokes, doesn't want to quit. I only smoke when I'm with him! Sigh.... I'm such a weakling.

Maybe I should have another baby...!!!!!! And extreme breast-feed for 8 years or so!!!

You're struggling for the exact same reason I was! It is no effort at all now that the OH has quit.

He's my downfall when it comes to resisting so many things... chocolate, cigarettes, alcohol, pizza.... but he's mine, bought and paid for, so I'll just keep nagging on!

"Well done" vibes coming at you and your SO, you are both doing well!

I've only got a deposit down on mine so there's still time to upgrade ;)

I'm feeling very pleased with myself today. I almost feel like a total non-smoker except my chest still feels crap in the morning. But, I'm starting to get a sore throat and feel a bit chesty, which is a good sign! :toofless:

I now have a mouth full of the worst ulcers. But I'm taking it as a positive because it means my mouth is healing and the pain should remind me not to start smoking again!

Be strong...you know there are only positive things about quitting, less wrinkles, better skin, cleaner lungs, better smells, more money and the food tastes better! My son went through it this last year and he didn't use gums or any type of extra thing to help him. His girlfriend just told him she hated it and that was his needed boost. I truly hope you can hang in there. I think you will be so happy. Just think of it as a battle you are going to win!

Good for you!

I'm cutting down on smoking myself (I only smoke cigarillos and weed after quitting cigarettes about 3 and a half years ago, but LOVE the act of smoking).
My fella and I picked up on the electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) that are available now and find it's really limiting our 'actual' cigarette consumption. Even though they're not approved for marketing as a smoking cessation device, we're finding they work really well. Still satisfying the oral fixation and feeling of smoking. And allowing you to dose your own nicotine (very helpful if you want to wean yourself off slowly). Once you reduce your nicotine all you're 'smoking' is a water vapour. It's awesome.

My friend "smokes" one of those - they're awesome! So realistic! They should do a nicotine-free version for people to go cold turkey as a placebo!

I have been quit for 3 Weeks, 1 Day, 14 hours, 25 minutes and 19 seconds (22 days).
I have saved £78.80 ($119.95) by not smoking 339 cigarettes.
I have saved 1 Day, 4 hours and 15 minutes of my life.
My Quit Date: 17/03/2010 22:30

Yay for success!

My other half smoked for 15 years and quit for me (I'm really allergic) so I know how hard it is. He tried using the pills and patches but ended up cutting the patches short due to money issues.

It was funny watching him realize that food actually wasn't as bland as he thought ^_^

They do actually have no nicotine liquids for that reason.
I'll never go off nicotine completely, as on it's own it's not addictive, really relaxing and non-carcinogenic.

and
YAAAY!
keep it up!
