What non-Tarot decks do you use? Are they any good? Do you get as good a result, or do you like your Tarot cards better?

I have the 'Gypsy Witch Fortune telling cards' - good for a laugh but little else- a true parlour game if there ever was one.

The Animal Medicine Cards- as much as the creators say this is NOT Tarot- it's as close to Tarot as you can get. Out for about 10 years now, it is a completely different system and is as accurate as Tarot can be - if you can make the adjustment to reading animal characteristic traits. Excellent deck.

The Power deck- Odd thing, good for meditation, but could never get into it.

The Dream cards- Bizarre deck using dream symbolism mixed with archetypes and such, but you read it by which suymbol catches your eye first, second, and so on, rather than laying them in a spread. A birthday gift.

InSights - a game for men. Game designed for men to get in touch with their inner feelings since men supposedly have no clue - DUH! Looks and reads like Tarot, includes a handy 'layout cheat sheet', and is used to answer specific questions. Sounds like Tarot to me!

I have one called the Moon Oracle. The only way it's like tarot is that they're both cards with pretty pictures. :)
Seriously though.... this deck has three parts to it, moon phases/element cards, moon goddesses, and houses. This deck is great for those "when" answers, because you can use the moon phase cards to give you a specific date (there's a chart in the accompanying book that gives you dates for moon phases for the next 10 years).

Amethyst Rose-- that sounds like quite a nifty deck! Have you had good results with it?

Tarot Bear,

I have those Dream Cards too. ....I think they were a gift too, but I can't remember. they are pretty to look at, but I couldn't get into them. Maybe, I'll sell them someday, maybe not. <shrugs shoulders>

:D

Well.... I used them on myself only once, to determine when the best time to have a handfasting was. Unfortunately I can't remember the outcome.
I can tell you, however, that they are very strong in the whole oracle department. The moon goddesses and houses have been more accurate on definining a situation/problem and how to solve it than any of my tarot cards are. Probably because they're not as cryptic as tarot can be.
The problem is that because they're not a tarot deck, you don't use your intuition to determine what the card is trying to tell you. The cards are the oracle, and they tell you exactly what you need to know (via the book). Therefore, it's a little more difficult to use them, because you either have to have the book when you do a reading, or spend a lot of time memorizing the various cards.

Thanks. :) That does sound like a lot of work, but seems worth it for once-in-a-while questions. Probably not the best (for me) for everyday readings, since knowing exactly the outcome of things might make life a little harder.. :D

I havent got any other decks apart from my two Tarot ~ but Ive just made my own Runes ~ which Im just learnign and getting really good results from!! I always thought they were just stones before but they are pretty easy to learn and Id reccomend making your own to anyone ~ I learnt so many of them as I painted the runes on my Jasper stones... Ill read for everyone here soon and use them at the moment to compliment a Tarot reading ~ They really back them up very well I think.... Does anyone else use runes?

Oo went a bit off track there... So - can anyone (Tarotbear?) recommend one of these decks for my little sis for her birthday?

SV~

Do you want tarot or non-tarot suggestions??

Tarot:
My suggestion.....take her with you and let her pick her own.

next.....suggestion.....rider/waite, robin-wood....most any Rider/Waite "look alike" deck....that way it will be easier for her to find reading material relating to her deck. :D

Non-Tarot:

No clue. :p

I've always heard that you shouldn't purchase your first pack of Tarot cards ~ they should come to you as a gift. As well, the first reading off the pack shouldn't be done by you for yourself ~ have someone else read for you.

I've always considered this to be a bit of a wives tale. I purchased my first tarot deck, and I more than likely did the first reading with it for myself. I've only one deck that was given to me as a gift and I"m not very attuned to it.....

That's a really neat idea, but what if you don't have anyone around to do that for you? :(

I tend to agree with Amethyst Rose about the old wives tale thing. I've read on another forum, someone had made the comment that .....back in the day.....tarot cards weren't easy to come by, you had to know someone....kind of a thing....to get the cards. But now-a-days....you can readily get them. I have purchased all my decks. I have no problems with them.

I think it's inappropriate to give a deck (though a nice gesture...you are doing them no favors), when you don't know if the person will relate to it or not....because if they don't, then it's a waste of your money, and ....you may be turning that person off to tarot.....because they may feel it's just too difficult. That deck may say nothing to them at all. I know the decks that I have, no one would/could have chosen them for me.

Silver....what better way to surprise her than to give her a shopping day in an occult store??? If I had a friend interested, that's what I'd do.....take them shopping....it gives you bonding time....and a nice outing....and they will appreciate the time you take to help them! :D

Thats a great idea Dagda!!! I will do just that :D

Youve got my vote for the old wives tale too ~ I bought both my decks and did the first reading for me too ~ Its just what you believe in isnt it ~ I know one girl who wont buy any of her spiritual stuff herself ~ she gives the money to me (or a friend) to buy her goods or asks the shop owner to pay out of her pocket then she will give her the money...strange but then people are arent they :D

Are there any 'young wives' tales?

I would take her somewhere where you can see and touch a bunch of different decks and let her chose one on her own, then you pay for it and give it to her as a gift.

How 'little' is little sis? Some decks may be much too complicated or so obscure for her to try to learn and use. Me? I always recommend the Robin Wood deck.

Thanks I think I will take her along and give her a treat to choose a deck and some candles or cd's or books ...anything she likes and goes ooo at I will give to the shop assistant and tell them to hide them behind the counter!! ~ My little sis is not little I just still think of her as that way ~ she is going to be 19! :D

Anyone use the Faery Oracle by Froud yet? I've been wanting to pick that up for a while since I love his art.

Oldish post, but I have to reply, because I was going to ask this very question. :D

I just recently acquired the Faery Oracle and it is wonderful! If you get it I highly recommend doing the initial exercises in the beginning of the book. It's a beautiful deck, great energy on it, and I found myself 'tuning in' to it a lot easier than the standard tarot.

Anybody else?
