That would depend on if you have a purpose to do a spell, and if you understand well the mechanics of doing one. :)

What do you need/want to do a spell about?

well i just wanted a simple little spell just to test my "strengths" and just to stop my curiosity of what happens during spells. lol

I personally waited until I had been Wiccan for 6 months first before I even thought of doing a spell. I was studying for about 3 years before that.

IMO, I wouldn't do a spell just to test your strengths. Wait until you feel you are ready and can handle it.

I agree with MidnightSun. You should have a specfic purpose in mind, a need or a want.

Well of course I agree with the other folks here :D I know it's mysterious and exciting to wonder what goes on, but doing a spell to test strengths could be kinda like shooting someone to see how a gun works.

Have you done some rituals? What about grounding, centering, and meditating? You can cast a circle and call the elements for ritual or to meditate or do divination readings if you like, you can work with energy by raising it and grounding it, etc., without doing a spell. You can practice the mechanics of magick (such as that grounding, centering, circle casting and closing, meditation, etc.) without doing a spell. You can do esbats and sabbats as well.

Even if someone tells you to do a certain spell, I think it won't work.

It has to be you who decides and you who can make it work.

But the spells can sometimes work in the way we don't want them to.

If I were you (and I consider myself a beginner after studying it for over a year now..which makes me wonder if I will ever be able to say that I know it good enough not to consider myself a beginner..ok, i just went off the track :ahhhh: ) I would first try concentrating and meditating upon yourself..of who you really are.

Without being in balance with yourself, the spells you cast might harm you or somebody else. You must know exactly why are you casting a spell and what the consecuences might arise from doing it..I don't want to scare you, but just take full responsibility of your act.

Just my thoughts.

Here's a thought for you - the efficiency of a spell is directly related to your a) focus and b) Will. Thus, if you haven't got a clear focus and a strong Will in mind - that is, you're just doing a spell to do one, rather then because you *need* to do one, it's not going to work.

By having a solid goal in mind you have something tangible to focus on and something that will make you be determined for it to work - thus it'll be more likely to work.

Unfortunately, magic done just to see if it will work, or because it's "cool", will rarely work. This is why I don't believe in doing parlour tricks (like, making things appear or moving stuff around) a lot of the time - the mind just doesn't need something "cool" to satisfy it's needs. Even if you do them to sharpen your skills, I think your mind is not going to register that as a clear goal with strong Will as much as, say, a healing spell.

For what it's worth though, practicing those techniques I mentioend is possible, and they are necessary for good spellwork later in many cases. You can also do rituals, as I mentioned, to get an idea of how to use those techniques and how energy works etc. Just from experiencing these techniques and working on them you will improve your spellwork later on. When you have a solid idea of your own philosophy and theology and what spellcrafting involves, and the basic techniques that are useful, as well as how it works, *that's* when you should start doing it.
