View Full Version : Trouble with pagan-name\circle name.

As long as i can remember I've grown up pagan *my first strong memories are from 4 on, which begins really with the introduction of my step father who brought my mom and i into Wicca*

However I was born part native american, and even had a naming ritual, my Narraganset name is Suwanee meaning Southwind.

For years that was my circle name, although I never quite cared for it. (To me it just meant that smoke from stinky ol' frankinmer *childhood name for incense* wound up in my face and nose preventing easy breathing)

As i grew older I began choosing other names that seemed to "come" to me. But I've never felt at home with any name.

Now as I am approaching rededication to my trad (I was dedicated originally when i was 7, long before i really had any idea what it all meant) and seeking the path to becoming a teacher.. it is very important that I find a name that suits me, that I am completely comfortable and able to identify with for AT LEAST another 2 years.

I was wondering if anyone knows any good meditations or brainstorming ideas for name searching.

Thanks so much in advance,
Sarah

I would suggest doing a search for "names" in Just Talk and New Pagan :)

Under the MW logo, there is a link to the search function (there is also a box to search at the bottom of every forum page) If you search for "names" many threads will come up about how other people found their names and maybe even suggestion on how to find one for yourself that will be helpful. :)

I don't know if this will help, but what I did is I made a list (I tend to make lists for everything!) of all of the things I wanted my name to be. I organized the list (could I get more anal?) by personal traits I'd like to express, Goddesses I'd like to pay homage to, and what this name means to me. It was shockingly easy after I did all of that.

Well you can research all kinds of names after brainstorming what you want your names to mean, as has been mentioned.

And/or you can ask for a clue when you go to sleep, meditate, do a tarot reading, et cetera. and see what comes up.

I think i need to start a special journal for this stuff.. that will help me.

So far i'm loving the suggestions, especially the list and dream stuff. Thanks for the search info.. I will try that ASAP.

Keep ideas coming if you come up with more. Thanks so much for your quick responses!

Southwind? Hehe is there a story behind the naming?

I'm not sure why at all to be honest. I suppose I could ask around. I've just never felt that it was "me"

Ooo, I feel for you. My name just came to me one night. It means the rise of the moon. I think I heard it in an oooold movie. Just open yourself to what comes. Look through books, maps, listen to music. Itll come to you when the time is right.

My name actually came to me when I was reading a book, but have not actually been "named" that as of yet, just kind of stuck with me, and am now begining not to like it so much, I really like my name here tho....
I'd say, meditate, read, listen to music, pretty much what everyone else said.
