Okay, first - I realize this doesn't really belong in the JT forum, but it's kind of urgent so I would like as much exposure as I can get. After a couple days, if one of the wonderful JT mods would be so kind as to move it to Healthy Pagan for me, *bats eyelashes* it would be appreciated. :)

Now, here's the deal. My husband and I are planning to return to Atlanta for a couple days over the holidays to visit family (we're scheduled to leave on Monday the 23rd). Well, yesterday, we found out that one of our nieces has a mild case of chicken pox (apparently only a handful of spots). I've had CP before but my husband hasn't. Now, we don't want to cancel our trip and we can't really afford the $200 it would cost to change our tickets, so I'm wondering if anyone has any advice to offer.

Basically, from what I've been reading, by the time we get down there my niece won't be contagious. But then there's the question of the other family that she's been exposed to. We've called our doctor and she says that a vaccination would probably not have enough time to take effect but that it may be a good precautionary measure.

So, I'm looking for opinions here. Should we spend the $95 (gah!) on the vaccination, skip it and just go, or cancel our trip altogether?

Anyone have any experiences with CP they'd like to share?

Much appreciated. :)

Chicken Pox ...........This is the serious question you have to deal with......Do you really want to live with a grown man who has the Chicken Pox?.........not to mention it's always harder on an adult than a child........

Is it possible to avoid the people who could be incubating it?

I'd say get the shot, I know it's a lot of dough, but it's worth it. Eshallet's co-worker landed himself in the hospital for 2 days because of the chickenpox. His case is a bit extreme, but as they say, the older you get, the worse the CP is for you.

Then again, your hubby could have a 'natural' immunity. Like me. Yeah, you're all laughing, but it's true. My brother got it when he was little and my cousins, so, of course, I was forced to play with them all the time so I'd get exposed. Never got them. Then my kid got them (TWICE!) when he was 2. Same thing.

But if you want to be safe, I'd say get the shot.

I would say get the shot too. The complications of an adult with chicken pox is really not worth saving the bucks. Not to mention you'll have to put up with all the whining of a sick hubby! :D

i say get the shot. Those who have gotten chicken pox before can get shingles later on.

Okay, we talked it over and so my husband's on his way now to get the required shots. It makes me mad that insurance won't cover it. Stupid insurance!

You're right, I do NOT want to be up here on my own with a sick grown man. They're bigger babies than kids when it comes to being sick! :p

Unfortunately, we can't really avoid the people who've come into contact with it, since it's the family that we're going to visit. I've teased my husband that we're going to make him the bubble boy!

I just hope we have enough time for the vaccination to take effect. *crosses fingers*

Oh, and Starlite, funny you should mention the 'immunity' thing ~ I actually thought about that myself, since no one in his family has ever had it (up til now).

I didn't know till after the oldest had CP that Hubby had never had them. He didn't catch it when the middle son had it either. Wonder if he'll get it if the youngest has CP?

I believe its against the law to fly with a contagion.
