I remember a few months ago Conan Obrien had these on his show. It's amazing what's after midnight on TV. The one I didn't see then was the Kung Fu Jesus.

I thought that too. I was wondering there for a minute if I was the only one. Looks like he needs to be wearing biker leather or something...

I'm sure Shnen and Dalia will agree with me here - when they get the bellydancing Jesus, I'm buying!

Isn't that sorta sacreligous? I'm not Christian, so I don't really care, but...lol. Doesn't it say "thou shalt not make a graven image", referring to idols, and yet they are making toys out of their own god? How silly! ;)

Er -well, that graven images thing gets into philosophy. . . many scholars think that implies not the representation of deity, but the belief that the representations - statues, etc. - were literally the deity themselves. But most Christians historically aren't much bothered by artistic representations of God, Jesus, saints etc. - and these fit into that category. The other end of the spectrum is certain Moslem sects, who won't allow the literal representation of anything related to deity in art.
I think these are actually kinda cute - and frankly, if they are frivolous, so what? Christianity once upon a time, back before the Reformation, used to be able to laugh at itself. Read the mystery play cycles if you don't believe me. It's high time that some humor got injected back into that belief system, whether it's deliberate or not.

I like the one with the injured child, and the nurse. I liked the one with the little girl, and the police officer. I'm not so sure about the Golf one, the Kung Fu one, or the Ballet Dancer one. I think I get the "message" of the statues...it's probably something like..."Jesus is with me in all that I do. He's my inspiration in everything..yadda yadda". Which is cool, I suppose. I guess I just feel that in some ways, this kind of thing goes too far.
For instance, when Madonna says a prayer before one of her concerts. Then goes out on stage, and acts in a manner quite the opposite of the religios deity she is praying to (back in her catholic days).
Or..when sports teams gather in prayer before their games.."Let Us be victorious". Instead of "Help us play in a truly teamlike manner. Help us to not care who wins or loses, but that we act in a manner which reflects our beliefs that each human being should treat other human beings with respect..yadda yadda". I just can't see Jesus really caring a fig, whether or not one team wins over another. Only about how those individual teammates, conduct themselves. Then, they will run out onto the court, push others down, scream obscenities at eachother...and after they win, hire hookers and bring them back to their hotel rooms, possibly raping them. Etc. I just don't like the inherant hypocrisy in "assuming" that Jesus, or God, will help you be the best at what you do...UNLESS you are trying to live up to the standard of morality, compassion, love, and righteousness that that faith dictates.
In my understanding of Christian Ideology, The reason why God helps people prosper, is so that they can bring Glory to "Him". If this is true, then a Basket ball player who wins the game, after saying a prayer, but then goes and slips a Rufi in some girls drink and drags her back to his hotel room, is CERTAINLY not doing so with any "Gods" backing, and brings no Glory to God.
Perhaps these statues serve as a reminder, to those who purchase them, and who ascribe to the Christian belief system, that WHATEVER they do in their lives, WHATEVER is important to them in their lives, they should remember that Jesus is beside them. And they should do so with his ultimate "glorification" in mind. They should act in a manner which would reflect his love, etc. Maybe it's the whole.."WWJD" thing, artistically displayed.

Madonna is now a cabalist...that worries me. =/ I get enough odd looks when I say "Jewish mystic" without mentioning that Madonna claims to follow the same path. Don't get me wrong, I think she's cool...but...she doesn't have a very good reputation preceeding her.

Oh my... That's...interesting, to say the least.
But I'm sure people buy 'em, else they wouldn't be on the market, yes? ;)

A belly dancing Jesus would be very cool though.
