D Witch
December 20th, 2002, 09:47 AM
In '97, when I was a seriously practicing witch, I got up at 5:30 am, to greet the sun. I jumped online to say good morning to Pagan friends, most of whom were east of me, and had already greeted the sun (I'm in So Cal, so it's not difficult to find people up by the time I'm up!)... I made cinnamon tea, & bundled up, for the wind was absolutely freezing & blowing. I heard later that the wind had been wild enough to blow down trees nearby! I lived three buildings from the beach, which was where I usually celebrated holidays, being a beach witch & all... I walked over to the beach parking lot, found a good rail to lean against, & faced east, with the wind in my hair...
It was a simply gorgeous sunrise...
Later that morning, I headed for San Diego, to visit my Mom, and my sister who'd come in from Colorado. We went to church with her that night, and she actually shushed us once, as we were giggling & whispering... It's a non-denominational church, & the preacher was saying something about, "whether you're christian, catholic, baptist (etc), you're welcome here," and I couldn't resist asking my sister what she thought they'd say if I introduced myself as a witch. Near the end, we sang a bunch of Christmas Carols, including "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing," and as I was singing, I changed all the lyrics to Pagan ones, on the fly! "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing, glory to the new Sun King, peace on Earth & mercy mild, God & Goddess reconciled, Joyful all ye nations rise, join the triumph of the skies..." It was terribly easy, and I absolutely belted it out, for I'd seen the triumph of the sky...
Last year was overcast, but cleared just after sunrise, and I got a glimpse of the sun. This year, it's raining today, & is supposed to rain through tomorrow... So I'll greet the sun through the rain...
Edited to add: The sun came through!!! It's another beautiful So Cal day... Hope tomorrow is too...
Happy happy solistice, everyone!!!
