After a major op in August 2009 I was horrified to find that I had not been given any on demand pain management as is the norm after an operation.
I called for the nurse and was told that no paing releif had been written up for me. Eventually after 5 hours had passed I was given a drug that is opiate based. I am allergic to Codine and all opiate based drugs. I was told this drug was safe but the side effects were awful. I will not list them all enough to say that I had several and some were really bad. One of which was hearing distortion, increase in tinnitus that I have already and is now worse than ever, eyesight problems and dizzy spells. All of these I am still having problems with.
I am to see E.N.T ( Ears nose and throat) specialist later this month and having a eye examination tomorrow.
I have not felt up to par since the taking of the drug and have been told that the effects should have worn off after I had stopped taking them. What should have happened and what has happened is quite different.
I need some psoitive energy to help me cope with things.

That sounds awful. The worst reactions I've had to medications was nausea and one case of anaphylactic reaction which was fortunately mild enough to treat at home with benedryl. I hope you can find some answers and some relief from your apparent side effects. Sending positive energies. :hugz:

I will find out on the 26th and thanks for think of me. I know this may seem trivial to a lot of people but for it is not. I already cope with a lot and this is just one more thing to learn to deal with. Nothing is impossible just a little wearing.

Actually, I've become quite disenchanted with western medicine over the years. Back in October I began seeing a doctor of Chinese medicine. They can do accupuncture, accupressure, whole-body massage, qi-gong, and natural medicines. I had accupuncture done for about 2 months and was very pleased with the reduction in number and intensity of headaches and other fibromyalgia symptoms.

Just thinking that you might find this form of medicine helpful as well.

This isn't trivial; it's your health!

When I had my last bit of surgery they gave me an anaesthetic that made me hallucinate - badly! I was still suffering hallucinations when they discharged me and my wife found me outside the hospital watching cars on a busy road; I think I said something about them being fish in a river to her!

I've now written a statement of my health problems and known allergies that I will be giving to the ward nurse when I go in for my next bout of surgery in February. It lists everything that is wrong with me, such as poor balance, so that no one can claim ignorance if they end up doing something that they shouldn't, such as attempting to give me an epidural when they are dangerous for me (which happened previously)!

If I was you I would write a letter to the doctor who carried out this surgery asking why you had no post-op pain relief and why, when some was given to you, it was an opiate based drug despite your known allergy. I would also contact PALS, you can find your nearest office through Google, and voice your concerns with them.

As a patient you do have rights and doctors are not gods, they do make mistakes.

I hope further treatment is more beneficial to you.

I wrote a letter a while back and the hospital is waiting for two people to give their reasons for the treatment I received and then I will be invited to a meeting that I asked for.
I am taking along an Indpendant person who knows the ins and outs of the procedure of the meeting. That way I will be fobbed of with any old excuse.

It sounds like a good plan to take long a lett to the ward kep a copy of it as well maybe even one by your bedside just incase someone says they had not seen the letter.

I am even considering seeing a solicitor as things are not getting any better

The NHS ( Nation Health Service) in the UK is great in some ways but it is understaffed on the ground floor and too many people in top office positions. Mistakes happen and when they do they are not minor ones.
I hope all goes well for you in February Tyger Tyger

I would definitely see a lawyer about being given opiates when you are allergic to them. You could sue over this.
