A friend of mine from school gave me a calendar of Gothic art for Christmas/Yule since today was our last day before break. The art itself is amazing, and there is information about every day on the calendar pertaining to different celebrations and traditions. He got it for me 'cos he liked it and thought I'd appreciate the art and had no idea about all the cool little bits of info inside. There's a blurb for every month talking about the name of the month and traditions of that month. For example, January:
"January is named for the Roman god of doorways, Janus, whose two faces look both forwards and backwards. The New Year is a traditional time to reflect upon the year before and look forward to the coming year. According to superstition, the head of the household should open the doors of the house just before midnight to let out the bad luck.
At sunrise on New Year's Day, the old calendar should be burned. The first person to visit the house on New Year's Day is called the "First Footer." He should bring the following gifts: coal, representing warmth; something green, for life; a loaf of bread, symbolic of a bountiful harvest; and salt, for prosperity. January is the month of the Snow Moon."
Some dates of interest mentioned on this calendar in the month of January include:
6 Jan.: Circle Sanctuary of Mt. Horeb (WI) becomes first recognised Wiccan Church
8 Jan.: Sacred to Freyja, the Norse Fertility goddess; Old Druid New Year.
12 Jan.: Dedicated to the Lares, the Roman household goddesses.
14 Jan.: Salem witch-trial jurors confess error (1696)
There's something on every day, as I said, those were just some I thought I'd share. This calendar is so cool. It's published by Dorset Press and it is called "Gothic 2003 Calendar," if anyone is interested in checking it out or getting one of their own.
