Spells have more energy when you make them up yourself - but when you're new at it or you can't rhyme to save your life (like me) that's difficult.
When I was new, I bought way too many spell books  But I never did use one word for word out of any of them. I use the books as a reference point (there are also millions of excellent websites, check out the stuck thread on cool sites in this forum) to get an idea of what the correspondences are, what to put on the altar, etc. and put the spell together myself. I also prefer not to call them "spells." I prefer the term "working" or even "prayer."
We have quite a few in the threads in the Magick and Rituals forum. You can usually find what you need by doing a search.

I mostly don't use spells, myself. . . if I do, it's often things that come to mind in that moment. (I don't tend to do very well with the heavily ritualized stuff :) ). I don't remember rhyming at all. . . but things got done!
Spells come from many places. Other folks, books, websites, yourself. I think the strongest ones would be ones from your heart, about what you're doing, what you're feeling, where you want it to go.
then again, I'm not really a spell person. . . :)

I do some spells, and have a pretty good track record.......I don't rhyme, and I usually write them out before I actually do them, then walk away....and come back to make sure I have worded them correctly.............then I do them.........

you have to be sure to cover certain basis, so I usually look at a few spells in relation to what I want to do, then take some from here and there and throw in a bit of my own creativeness :)

Gosh, haven't done a spell in a long, long time..
But when I did, I did it completelly in my own way.. Sometimes I used tools, but not acording to any other suggestions, but my own.. For example: I chose colors of candles based on my feeling and not on traditional structure of what each color is asociated with..
I also did my own chanting, with my words, and it never rhymed (I read somewhere that rhyming is used so that the person can easier remember the words.. can't remeber where). I would write the words down on the piece of paper and would not try to learn them. Instead I would read them (during the spell casting) over and over again until I memorized them.. I would also write the same words on several pieces of paper and place them underneath each candle.. but, that was part of the "ritual" and I won't go there..
Hope this helps :)

It's best if you write your own, as the way it's set up will be how you designed it - since you picked everything and wrote it up, your energy will already really be in it, and you will have made sure everything is focused on your goal in your mind. When you find a spell in a book or a website, someone has just written them up to include things (like candles, colours, smells, and timing) that they would think of for that goal. Sometimes they've tested their spell and sometimes they haven't, but if you look at it and the things they've used (say they used orange for a friendship spell) and you don't see how it fits (you think of pink for friendship, not orange) then you change it to what works for you. If orange isn't friendship to you the spell just ain't gonna work with orange.
There's a thread in Magick & Rituals about basic spellcrafting. Basically, you make sure to choose a specific goal - take some time because you want it to be clear and concise. Try to think of ways it could go wrong or end up wrong, then rethink your goal until the wording is perfect.
Then you pick correspondences or mind keys for that goal - you can find them in books or just think - what colour reminds you of your goal? What smell? What moon phase? Then you tie it in together - get your stuff all together on a time you pick, cast a circle, ground and center, raise energy, and send it off (you could send it by burning a paper with your goal on it, or burning a candle, or just directing the energy into the sky and imagining it achieving your goal, and so on). Then ground and center and release your circle, and you're done.

I think rhyming is used so you'll remember them, and also so when you are chanting/saying them, the progression will be so easy that it'll take less of your mind. Also, rythm builds up energy and patterns help as well - the pattern of words can mimic a pattern in your correspondences to your goal. Finally I think taking the time to rhyme makes you focus and think out your goal entirely - as you're trying to write out the spell you have to think harder about what you want and how to say it. This in itself will lead to more focused and effective spellwork. JMHO.

*nods* I do workings when I really need to focus on a need or desire, but it didn't take long to learn how to do magick without all the props. I have several permanent altars, and just lighting their candles is magick in itself. I do a lot of driving, and I've done magick by singing in the car and appreciating the beauty around me.
I agree with the concept of rhyming as a means of raising energy. I've memorized a few simple ones for some everyday spells, like parking spaces and traffic lights.
I'm currently studying Francesca DeGrandis' book, Be A Goddess. She reminds me of something that I already knew - that every single thing we do can be a ritual, from washing the dishes to cleaning the closets to even making love. Very simple concept, and I've really seen results since I put it to use.

Oh, please don't think I'm mocking you, but. . .
hehehehehehe!!! :D!!!! This has been an ongoing contest with people I know, who are pagan/do magick/energy work. We'll be sitting at a red light, and you'll have various people in the car gesturing or saying things under their breath etc trying to get the light to turn green *laughs* Usually I win though - I watch the other direction's lights to see it turn yellow, then point at the light with a flourish. . . tada! It's green! :D yes, yes, I cheat ;) Like anything else in life, especially magick, it's all about the timing, and what everyone else sees ;)

Well, depending on how you look at it, prayer is very similar to a spell. In my opinion it is quite often more efective.
Not to mention, i think its a waste of time to do a spell for every little thing or problem, it only makes you dependant on magick, and lets face it, sometimes magick isnt always enough. no offense to anyone here, thats just how i feel.

I've only done a few candle spells myself. They are the easiest and I tend to do better with the simpler the better theory. But when I do a candle spell I usually don't chant, but "talk" to whoever or whatever is out there and let them know what I'm doing and why and how and all of that stuff. I've not lived by myself so I don't usaully talk out loud about it either, and so far they've all worked for me.
