I used to have a lot of cats. (Of course, I used to live on thirty acres of land, too.) But not, I'm living with my parents and I can't keep cats here. I miss my Kitties!!:wah:

Thanks, Rubi! I also have some of Freyja to post, she's the one that I'm trying to integrate with these three - it's going better. Groucho is about 8 months old and isn't yet altered, so he's gotta play tough guy! I forgot to bring the pics of Freyja and also of Buddy and Squeak to my old house to scan them, as we don't have a scanner at Flar's. It was all I could do to remember the rest of the handfasting pics!

My poor baby almost broke her leg tonite. I know when I think about this later, I'm going to lose it big time--but I was very calm when I helped her.
She was standing on the keyboard like she always does, but her foot slipped down into the keys and got caught under them.
While she was flipping out, she completly turned herself around and I had thought for a minute that she broke her leg.
Somehow I stayed calm and pulled her out, but it was very scary.
The only cute thing was that when she flew back to her cage, I had bent down to check to see if her leg was ok and she came out and kissed me all over my face. It was like she was saying, "my hero!"
My mother had to keep me very calm because I started to cry right away but I didn't want to do it in front of the bird. (Pathetic? Why yes, yes it is.)
It's like the "mom instinct" in me kicks in whenever something happens to the baby. You know when you cut your finger and your mom is all good and everything while she's putting on the bandage, but as soon as you leave the room, mom starts crying or getting sick or something. That's how I get with the birdie. :D
I'm happy to say that it doesn't look like there is any damage to the leg and she was very kissy before she went to sleep.
Here's one of her checking out the screen--she's got to make sure she looks her best you know!

Thanks sweetie. It's so wierd. She spends soooo much time on the keyboard but lately she's had trouble walking around on the keys. I had no idea that her foot would be able to slip between them! After all, she's been walking on the thing for a couple of years now and never had a problem. Hopefully, this will be a one time deal--I couldn't watch that again! (My poor baby. :( )
I think part of it is that she's getting ready to lay more eggs and her balance and everything is off a bit. She walks kind of like she's drunk sometimes. So that could be a part of the problem.
>sigh< Pouncy and Possum want to play with Freyja but she's still spittin' and hissin' every time they come near her......Groucho still wants to start a fight but jumps when she screams - and she has one ear-piercing scream!
I have faith that they will be ok. Eventually they have to realize that they are all living under the same roof. :)

And Birdie... what a Star!
I'm real glad she's ok....
I know exactly how you feel, WC. Tonite I was sitting here and Opie came up and sat on the chair nest to me. He started kinda sneezing and pawing at his face, I leaned over and put my hand out to see what the matter was, and his left front canine fell out in my hand! I about had a heart attack! He seemed relieved to have it out; I was a basket case. Being 13 is tough on a cat.... And on Mom....

I've told this story too many times - but it may comfort you. When we lost our Petey, who we had for 14 years, within two weeks Buddy came into our lives. He's so much like Petey it's almost like Petey just found another body to live in.
Wizard will live on in your heart forever, as do all of the pets we have lost.
Freyja still hasn't adjusted here. Now I'm feeling like it's more her fault. She refuses to give the other cats a chance. Not fun to wake up in the middle of the night with a catfight going on way too close to your face..........

We need a videocamera to take pics of Groucho and his new toy. It's just a stupid bunch of feathers on the end of an elastic string on a little fishing pole. He's doing backflips in the air and we have to watch where we swing it so that he doesn't come down on the coffee table or another cat :T

Something very similar happened to me. I lost my cat Bones after 18 years, and about 8 months later my current guy Ricky arrived as a stray. He has so many similar mannerisms to Bones there are times I've sworn it's her.

Vroom,
We have 2 cats with Ozzy and a dog plus my wifes cockatiel and my sons parakeet. We used to also have an african grey that I considered a brother...I grew up with him literally. Rudy died about a year ago, he had epilepsy of all things. Anyway...
Macaws have been measured at around 2700 pounds per sq. inch of bite pressure for one thing. He could take a paw off like you or I could snap a tooth pick. He has only ever bitten me badly once, he was startled by a very loud bang (bicycle tire innertube exploded when bringing a bike into a warn garage after being at near freezing temperatures). That required 5 stitches...and even then it was not that bad of a bite...compared to what he could do. The other thing is Ozzy weighs just over 4.5 lbs. (notice how Reid who is 5 has to use both hands to hold him up) with a wing span of about 3 - 3.5 feet (guessing here...I havent measured his wingspan). He also has very strong feet and fairly sharp claws. Not to mention his vocal capabilities...when he decides to he can be so loud as to cause you to wince in pain...literally. He is no hawk by any means but does have a tremendous amount of power in his biting end and being a good size he is fairly intimidating.
Course the cats dont fully understand that he is an absolute sweet heart and would love it if they would come lick his head or rub his belly. Ozzy also does a very good 'meow' and drives the cats nuts at times.
While I do keep an eye on Ozzy when he is out and our cats are in...I am not afraid of Ozzy getting hurt. I think if one of the cats gets froggy...he will learn a very painful lesson and that will be that. I sill dont leave Oz out when no one is around...just in case of the cats...and also because a bird this size could absolutely destroy a piece of furniture, door frame, what have ya as he just goofs around. As an example...Oz gets 1foot sections of untreated 2x4 for chew toys. He goes through one about every other day.
As I said...we have Ozzy with 2 cats now...plus we have two smaller birds. You just have to be mindful of who is where. And a spray bottle, or in my case an electric squirt gun, makes quick cat training work.

Thanks for the wonderful info Toad!:D My hubby was considering getting me a large parrot/Macaw and I always just told him NO because of the cats. Out of 7 I only have two that think they are 'birdhunters', but I think a bird Ozzy's size would really make the one think twice!:T
I was also worried because of where we live, the house is always between 60 to 70 degrees (inside, thats all year) and I didn't think it would be warm enough for a parrot.
Like I said, Thanks for the info!;)

Glad to help Vroom...however I have to say this cause you said the magic phrase 'considering getting me a large parrot/macaw'.
Now if you are an experienced bird person...ignore the next part and have fun with your new baby should you decide to get one. Being experienced you will undoubtably understand why I wrote this. I grew up around parrots. A Mexican Yellow head, a Cockatoo, and an African Grey were my siblings...I didnt have human brothers and sisters. Literally as long as I can remember there have been large birds around the house.
If you are a new bird person...please continue on. Please keep in mind that I am NOT trying to preach, just trying to make absolutely sure you understand what you are getting into. Honest I am not tyring to be mean here. I do volunteer work for the local avian society where we rescue problem birds, unwanted birds and place them in good homes just like an animal rescue center.
If you are a new bird person...I have to highly recommend that you do alot of research into large birds before you do anything else towards a possible purchase. You mentioned macaw so I am going to go from that perspective.
A macaw can be a real handful. I refer to him as my other son...but honestly, thats only half jokingly. A large parrot is a tremendous commitment in both time and resources. Ozzy was a handfed baby. I know the breeder, and I even helped bottle feed him as a baby. Anyway...the breeder cut me a tremendous deal at 1500. Generally a hand fed is upwards of 2500 from a good breeder.
A bird this size, if he is not hand fed can be an almost insurmountable challenge in getting him hand trained. Read that as get some welders gloves and work on your pain threshold - again not to spook here...this is speaking for alot of real experience.
Your average Macaw will live 80 to 100 years. No...that wasnt a mistype. I fully expect Ozzy to outlive me. I got him after Rudy died about a year ago...in bird terms Ozzy is still a baby at not quite 2 years old.
Second cages and such are going to be a huge investment. In our house Ozzy literally has his own bedroom. His cage is 5' by 5' by 6' tall. It sits in the middle of the room. Honest its his bedroom....he even has his own TV (to keep him company when no one is home...he loves cartoons). The cage was more than I paid for Ozzy...admitingly though...it is a very nice cage. We also have stands in the living room, my bedroom and a custom stand in the shower (Ozzy showers with me every few days...and as odd as it sounds its actually recommended and very good for him and his hygene).
Food...somewhat akin to a dog...Ozzy can eat a tremendous amount of food. He eats processed parrot food, nuts (as treats - not a staple food) and vegtables (he LOVES frozen carrots) and of course fruit (mango, apples, bannas, kiwi and his fav blueberrys). The veggies and fruit are really his staple foods. He also frequently eats pasta, baked potatos, cheese (he is a cheese nut) and about once a week a small portion of meat. A large parrot needs a very well balanced diet for both his physical and his mental health. Birds really do act insane when their diet is out of balance. And when you get an insane acting large parrot like Ozzy you can easily get injured.
Birds in general need lots of attention. More so than any dog or cat that I have ever owned. A large bird like Ozzy will DEMAND attention. He has playful moods, sleepy cuddly moods, and yes even the nasty 'leave me alone or I am gonna bite ya' moods. Again...like their food...lack of attention can and frequently does cause serious mental instability in birds. Ozzy is constanly around me when I am home. If I move rooms he will follow. He goes in his cage at bed time and when everyone leaves. He is truly a part of the family and it is very much like having another child.
Now with all that said. If you are up for the commitment, I would still recommend that you start with a smaller bird. Get used to dealing with a bird and its commitment. Birds in general are somewhat needy, you have to pay them constant attention to keep them happy and sane.
I can add, that birds like Ozzy are absolutely wonderful. He cuddles me, he is genuinely happy and excited to see me when I get home. Occassionally he even pukes one me (gross I know...but its the way a macaw marks you has his mate so in that way its sweet). He is incredibly smart, very vocal and highly trainable. He adores my kids and wife and like a good dog is very protective of them. There is nothing quite like a large parrot and a macaw in particular. They just take alot of work...work that is well rewarded in a lifetime partner.
Sorry for the length...and if that sounded preachy. If you couldnt tell I am an absolute bird nut and I guess I have seen too many birds that needed rescued. If I can answer anything else please PM/email me etc. I could talk about birds all day.
Best wishes!

Mine is a special breed called a "dark-eyed clear" parakeet. We didn't know what she was when we got her--hell, we thought she was a boy for the first two years we had her until she started laying eggs! She's a bit bigger than a "normal" keet. The best way to describe her size? Think between a regular parakeet and a lovebird size. Of course SHE thinks she's a child--personally, I think that a 5 year old child was reincarnated into a feathered suit!!!
Here's a newer pic in one of her favorite mugs. We've got mugs all over the house and never know where she is until we see a tail moving in one. :T

Wtchy - Ahha that explains it. She is a cutey pie! And I totally undersand the 5 year old reincarnated into a feather suit statement. It amazing how much personality birds have.
Old Witch - Twinkie is a doll. And a talker too? I know folks say that cockatiels can be good talkers...I guess I have just been very unlucky and havent run across one cause its obviously true. Then again I grew up with a grey that was an exceptional talker for a grey...I am hopelessly spoiled.
I have some friends that breed pionus. Not very good talkers but just sharper than a tack. These guys make fantastic birds if you want to teach tricks and such. They are super neat!
Sorry to hear you lost yours. I know that when I lost my grey I was absolutley destroyed. It was like loosing a brother to me. Its never fun to loose a pet.

Wow Toad...again alot of good info! And no, you dont sound preachy, just really helpful...probably alot more so than I would have gotten out of the 'pet shop' people!
And with all that said, we would have to move first before I could have a bird that size....I would want him to have his/her own room/cage area, and we just dont have that kind of room here right now!
We could have some thing smaller here with out any problems, what would you suggest? Is there going to be a problem with the temp of the house? I have been told by a pet shop that they (birds) can have no drafts what so ever......which honestly didn't make any sense to me since they are birds, they were supposed to be outside anyway.
Give me some suggestions and I'll research away!:D

Oh you guys, these feathered wonders are marvelous.... I have a question tho.. kinda odd (well until you concider where I live.)
We have tons of flea markets here that have birds. All kind of birds. And they make my heart break... I know that most of them are wild and scared to death by the crowds, noise and with what happened to them. I especially feel bad for the babies...various parrots and lovebird and cockateils etc. Oh and the tiny finches. Some barely have their first feathers. And most are Adult fancy parrots that I know are kidnapped from their homes, the sellers say they are wild birds, just for "show" not pets. And to have them chained. I keeping having an impulse to rescue at least one, but, having seen the information you wrote, and knowing my health... not a plan. But, are parakeets difficult or so long lived? Oh and can you report these birds to a humane society? I just know that they got here illegally. They are so sad.

Lets see...the temp does concern me a bit. While you are absolutely correct...these guys do live outside natively...you have to remember that most of them are from tropical climates. They can handle drafts just fine as long as they are 90 degree drafts. :) Most birds will be fine in 70 degree temps...its when it gets into the low 60's that its concerning...especially for the little guys.
In cooler temps its important to keep em out of drafts. Covering them at night helps keep them warm as the temps drop and I believe the cover helps them to feel secure while they sleep. Another thing that helps is a small space heater, electric please (keep those nasty gas fumes away from the lil uns). I have used a little electric space heater with thermostat with excellent results.
We also move our little birds depending on the season. This time of year the keet and the teil are in the dining room. Our dining room is full of windows...lots of light...but its generaly cooler than the rest of the house. Also do watch the air vents...blowing air conditioning on them is not a very good idea either.
Just keep in mind these are tropical animals. They are used to 95 degrees and high humidity. They do fine at the cooler temps but once you get into the mid 60's or lower I get concerned. If you combine mid to low 60's plus a draft you are in serious danger of of getting a sick birdie. They will also tell you when its too cold. If they are puffed out and not moving much in the middle of the day...they are too cold. Puffy bodies, shaking, lethargic behaviour...just like hummies...they will tell ya.
As for what I recommend...my caned answer is a handfed cockatiel. Teils are wonderful animals. Very smart, very trainable, lots of personality and they love people. They are smallish so the cage requirements or not going to put you in the poor house. My wife has a teil, Bailey, and she is a doll.
If you want to go a step higher, I would have to go with the handfed African Grey. I literally grew up with a grey. They are generally considered the best talkers in the bird world. They are very sweet, and very people oriented. For a first time owner a grey is managable, but still a healthy commitment. If you do want to go with a grey...do alot of research and talking with the spouse and such. A grey will be a lifetime partner. They live to 80ish...ours died very young due to epilipsy...he was 38.
Whatever bird you choose...I cant recommend a good breader and handfed babies enough. Handfed birds are used to people handling them and are truly pets. A wild caught birds can be hand tamed...but there is always that 'wildness' in them that makes you keep an eye on them constantly. Not a bird you want to have around guests or children or such.
Last thing...if you get to looking at grey class birds...and someone suggest a mexican yellow head, lilac crown, please stop listening to that person. Those two birds can be excellent pets...I have a sister who is one in fact. :D But there are individuals in that species that are just flat mean. I have come to believe that these birds have some sort of genetic problem and lean toward insanity. You can get wonderful birds here...but its truly a crap shoot. Not a good first bird.
If there is anything else I can answer I would be happy to...just holler!

Materra I totally understand where you are coming from. I would be trying to rescue em all...but then again I do volunteer for the local avian society. Getting an adult wild parrot can be done...you can train them. However, unless you are an experienced bird person and are prepard to endure the pain you gotta stay away from these guys. Its sad I know...I would want to take them all home.
You could most likely deal with a parakeet or cockateil. They are somewhat long lived still.
I have never seen a market like what you are talking about. But I have heard and read about them. Materra I would not hesitate to report these folks. If you like, if you will forward on the address to me I can report it. I have a few contacts that could makes some phone calls and at least have these folks looked at...and hopefully they can take the birds and find them better homes.
These people that do this to these birds just make me ill. I would dearly love to put these people in a cage, feed them poorly, make them live in filth, and make them live in a state of terror. Let them get a taste of what its like if you will. I do believe karma will catch these folks...I just wish it didnt take so damn long.

Thank you Toad. Appreciate the input. So many are babies.. it just kills me to see them. Funny too, I think the birds know when someone they would like is around. They get calmer and look at you differently. I know the Dealers there arent too fond of me. As I will insist the move them out of the direct sun, and give them fresh water too. Poor things. Thanks again.
Edited to add.. next time the appear.. I will call the humane society.

I agree totally with the hand fed cockatiel.......Twinkie was hand fed......and he still likes to get in bed with me and eat out of my hand........When I got Twinkie he was very young......and he wasn't pretty yet, but he came running to the front of the cage to greet the sales girl and hopped on her hand.....Me, being no dummy, said don't go any farther, I want that one.........And since Twinkie lives in my bedroom........I kinda spend all my time in there too........My art/work table is in there.......we have a space heater in there, to keep him warm in the winter........Summer is no problem, I just direct the vents of the AC from him ( and it's so hot down here, he doesn't get too cool.......and he's covered at night any way..........My previous Cockatiel, Dixie, lived with us 18 years......A cockatiel is the way to go!!

Oh OW, big huge energy coming. You know how we feel about him here. :heartthro :heartthro :heartthro
But, are parakeets difficult or so long lived?
Not difficult at all just a heck of a lot of fun. They can average to about 15 years old. They are truly like little people--each have their own personality that seems to come out right away.
The one I had before the Egg, we called "Bird." Generic? Maybe, but nothing else fit!
Anyway, we had him for only a few short months and got him when he was about 2 or 3 months old. But man, what a little personality he had. When it was time for bed, the little guy liked to be sung to and after the cover would go on, he'd peek his head out at the bottom of it to see what I was up to on the other side. I've neer gotten over losing him, especially since he was so young when it happened. It wasn't medical, we were away overnite somewhere and when we came back, it was quite evident that something had literally scared him to death. (I do know what it was, but would rather not share it right now.)
Anywhoo, we got the Egg a week later. I didn't want her at first because I was still grieving over Bird, but this one got to my soul. She was so odd looking for a parakeet (thus the research to find out what the hell she was) she has these almond shaped eyes that are almost human.
But within the week, she already had us playing this game that SHE made up! (And now almost 6 years later, still plays it daily.) She kisses us, runs to the end of the perch or finger or whatever she's on while we say real big, "IIIIIII Loooovvvve You!" Then she runs right back and give us another kiss! She started it, not us and it cracks me up every time we do it.
I think many times that parakeets are underrated. I hate it when there is a family function and I will stay home to be with the birdie...most of our famly lives out of state, so it's usually a couple of nites away from home. They look at us like we are crazy for worrying about a bird. Or they will actually say, "it's just a bird what's the big deal?" Can you believe that? I love ALL animals/birds/what-have-you and yet when someone has to stay home because of their dog, it's accepted. How rediculous.
Ok, done ranting.
To answer your question though Materra, you sound like a perfect match for a birdie!

see i didnt realize that cat's had favorite colors and then we got Dozer. He loves orange! He has a box full of stuffed animals and beanie babies but there are 2 that he loves more than any of them, an orange cat that was given to me as a joke a long time ago, the poor thing looks as if it has been run over by a car, and tigger, who is obviously orange as well. Well on Easter my kids grandma got them plastic eggs to hunt. Imagine my suprise when i went upstairs and found this in the kitty bed.

Well, Akron was the farthest away I could run at the time. Unfortunately, he works at Microsquish and knows EVERYBODY in toen. Plus his family was there and he'd sort of "outed" me to them as a Witch--he also told my siblings. Nice guy.
Anyhoo . . . :fofftopic
VroomBroom your cats a doll! I have three black kitties: Banzai (who kind of looks like Claws), Calamity Jane, and her sister Emily (who is a gorgeous long-haired all black kitty with big gold eyes--- and is one of my familiars)

Thanks for the love for the black team!;) Claws is a ham by nature, he sees the camera and he's 'on'!
Now Tigger wants to show off, unfortunatley he always is sleeping!:T

June 12th, 2003, 01:59 AM
I have a Tigger, too! He is also sleeping most of the time. My vet told me that orange tabby cats are the most laid back cats she deals with. She isn't sure if it's the type of cat, or because almost all orange tabbies are male. Just like, tortoise shell kitties: all female, almost always bossy or with attitude.
Your Tigger is such a cutie!
I'm a Professional Pet Sitter, I take care of a lot of different animals, but kitties are always my favorite!

Awe, what a great job! Tigger is deffinatly laid back, to the point of comatose sometimes!:T Except when a stranger comes in the house...OMG he turns into the biggest skitz and he has a place under the kitchen sink where he acctually gets into the wall and hangs out till they leave!
Speaking of torties, here's Trinity, mouthy and very full of attitude too!:p

My dog, Phoebe, is an adopted German Shepard, some sort of retriever mix that found me, as it turns out. It's very strange but I was at a pet adoption day just looking, not planning to adopt. This little face looked up at me and I swore I was looking at my dog that had passed away a couple of years before. Thirty minutes and $65 later, she was on her way home with me.
I had my other dog, Gypsy, for ten years, almost eleven, when she died. They look almost exactly alike.

I thought I'd put in a picture of the litter my Posey came from--she's the fluffy tabby in the middle front. Their mama was feral--one of my clients gets a lot of cats in her barn and she live traps them and then spays or neuters them. The mama was spayed after the babies got big enough to be on their own.
But isn't Posey darling? (If I say so myself!)http://community.webshots.com/s/thumb1/6/39/0/29163900JwjnMmUEFQ_th.jpg

I posted this in Pet Pics earlier and thought I would post it here too :-)
These are my babies and a friends baby...the large one is named D.O.G. (pronounced "dee-O-gee) of course, as you can see he is a Great Dane. I acquired him in January at the age of 16 months, when the family had to move in with one of their parents due to alzheimers. It was either me or they were taking him to the animal shelter (and he lives in the house!) The middle sized one if Morpheus, I have had him since he was 6 weeks old, hes a bull mastiff/american pit bulldog with a little chow mixed in somewhere, the littlest of the three is Biscuit, she is a 7 week old Dauschaund.
