The Wicker Man was a ritual tool. Every year at harvest, people would tie bits of fabric or paper on him to represent their troubles and then run the wicker man out of town or burn him.

You should also be looking for "John Barleycorn." That should get you some more information.

Thanks Mith! Heres what that site said about him....
"The village builds a wicker man! It's a huge figure made of sticks and twine, heavily garlanded with flowers. The villagers come to tie their wishes to him with twine; then he's carried into the fields and burned as a good luck charm for the growth of crops and the bounty of the coming harvest. (In the dim and ancient past, the wicker man may have imprisoned human and animal sacrifices to be roasted alive -- but that's a thousand years in the past: now, it's a merry good luck charm.) "
ooohhhh...when i get my camera to work, I'll take a picture of my shot glass!!!:D

it is a great film which i enjoy all the more each time i see it.
in fact i'm posting here now because we just finished watching it again.
the music is wonderful, and Christopher Lee did the whole thing for free. he loved the screenplay so much, but they were having a hard time financing it. so he agreed to forgo his percentage so they could get it made.
the Pagan backdrop is truly great, but some people have a hard time with the ending. not me though, i think it's one of the great cult-films of all time! but you have to view it as a horror film with a (legitimate) Pagan story, NOT as a Pagan film with a brutal ending.
what are you waiting for... go rent it now!!!

It's a great movie, but I especially love the music. Unfortunately I've never been able to track down a copy of the soundtrack.

Oh yes it is a marvellous film, but you do have to watch it with the right mindset, as Greenman says. If you have trouble finding it you could try http://www.blackstar.co.uk/ - they can find pretty much any video for you given a little time.
