View Full Version : The Faeries Oracle

I bought The Faeries Oracle today and the images are absolutely stunning. I've always adored the Faeries (my matron Goddess is a queen of the Sidhe, Aine) and have felt drawn to them. Does anyone else have this deck?

I have it. Love it. Haven't really used it but on few occassions. The Dark Lady looks like me. Luathas the Wild is very much like my love. I feel a connection to it even if I haven't used it. Still learning the Tarot and then when I feel experienced enough I will use it again.

Got any spread suggestions for this particular oracle?

I'm still exploring it, but I would imagine many Tarot spreads would work well with this oracle as well. I love the Dark Lady card, she is so sensual and sexual and mysterious and me!

I just received the Fairy Ring (by Franklin + Mason) for my birthday...I love it, it's an oracle deck not a tarot deck. The cards are sorted into seasonal courts, and the fairy festivals are also included.
But I don't see a Dark Lady card...maybe I have another deck.

I use the Froud Faeries Oracle - I had to invent my own spread - basically, I just ask my question, shuffle until it feels right, spread out the cards and draw [usually, unless I feel impelled to more or less] seven of them to give me a sense of the situation.
www.faeries.net has the online version, and it's the only online reading I've ever tried that I thought was deadly accurate. Most of the other computer generated ones don't give me anything, but this always seems to be dead on.

The deck I got is The Faery Oracle by Brian Froud and Jesa Macbeth. Brian Froud was the conceptual designer for the movies the Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. He also did the books Faeries, Good Faeries/Bad Faeries and the Lady Cottington Pressed Faeries books. His paintings are so exquisite.

I must admit, I've been to the website to visit these cards every day since you all told us about them. I'm soooo drawn to them, more so than the Fairy Ring cards. Which is awful b/c I haven't even had them 3 weeks yet! Is that fickle or what? Oh no, I'm becoming a card slut! :bigredgri

I've been looking at those for a little while now... But I wasn't sure that since I've never had any cars... well, if they would be a good place to start... What do you guys think? Or should I start with something else?
(I have a SERIOUS thing for faeries... goes a ways back that most people don't know about, but there's such a strong pull from them for me....)

I like them for a few reasons:
a) the artist, Brian Froud, is one of the best Faery artists of all time.
b) the cards are really neat looking
and c) they are a great way to get in touch with the faeries.
The author of the book that goes with them, Jesa Macbeth, makes it clear that these are nothing like other card oracles such as tarot. She gives 'starter' meanings, but you're not even supposed to look at those until you've asked each and every faery on each and every card what they want to say to you. And let me tell you, they'll tell you some stuff that's funny, some stuff that's cool and also some stuff that you might not want to hear (trust me, it happened to me...) My son really likes them, we lay all 66 cards out on the floor and he gets to ask who has something to tell him. He usually gets several responses (faeries love to play with kids.)

I would say that your chances of getting lost with this particualr deck are fairly small. The fairies seem to have a way of "watching out" ;)

It's the only online "click and read" site that's ever worked for me - it's a little scary :)
You might also, if you can afford it, think about buying a copy of Froud's "Good Faeries/Bad Faeries." The book contains a lot of the artwork from the deck in larger size. Great for meditation.

I have a question....is there a suit called the Singers? What do they signify?
I too am taken with these cards. They seem to grasp on to you, and are easy to understand. I just did my first three-card online spread! I've visited the site before, and had just drawn the one card, and have gotten a different Singer.
I'm meeting hubby + kids for lunch today...just happens the restaurant is right next to Barnes + Noble. Maybe I can sneak in and get my own deck!
(going back to dwell on cards some more)
Azure
January 8th, 2003, 10:04 AM
The cards don't have 'suits' as such, but the singers are roughly equivalent to some of the major arcana - the forces that are greater than us that act upon us and/or with us. With the Faeries Oracles, it's easier to think of the cards as personalities than symbols.

That's a very interesting way of putting it, Azure... because that's exactly what I did naturally!
I did two 3 card readings last night, and both seemed to hit pat/present right on the head! Oddly enough too, I felt calmer and more centered after I did them... Seemed almost strange to me that that could happen through something online that's not a conversation with real people! Now I HAVE to find a time to get the deck!

If you go to amazon.com, you can read the entire intro there. They have 28 pages or so that you can view. I love their description of learning to listen to the cards.

The most fun and meaningful way to read the cards is to remember that each of the drawings/paintings is a representation of an actual living faery. When Brian Froud paints he sort of 'taps into' the world of the fae and paints what he sees there. So if you call on the faery that is in the picture, he/she just might answer you and you just might be surprised at what they have to say.
Azure
January 8th, 2003, 11:23 PM
Just of note, I never read these cards reversed - I think the faeries are pretty clear without having to rely on that sort of thing (I'm not big on tarot cards reversed either, I think the meanings are clearer upright). You'll have to try for yourselves, but I bet you'll see what I mean when you've played for awhile.
Of note, I keep these cards wrapped rather specially too. A layer of orange silk I dyed for a fairy dress for myself, a layer of pale blue silk I swiped from the costume shop from my Hermia costume in Midsummer Night's Dream a few years ago, and a layer of deep pink cotton muslin on top, that I also dyed myself.
Mystsong
January 8th, 2003, 11:26 PM
Ok, now to sound stupid... what do you mean by "reversed"????
And I would imagine keeping them wrapped specially would make things nicer for all involved... :)
I'm so anxious to get them now... you'd all get a kick out it! hehe
Azure
January 8th, 2003, 11:31 PM
A reversed card is one that is drawn from the deck upside down after shuffling. I shuffle this deck sideways so they all stay right side up. As with tarot, the book provides for the reversed cards meanings, but I ignore those, and go with the vibe I get from the card itself. I think reversed cards in this deck tend to distort messages a bit.
Mystsong
January 8th, 2003, 11:41 PM
I like your outlook... Seems more fitting to me... I never fully understood why there should be a whole other meaning when a car is flipped (ok, reversed now, not flipped!)... But I guess that's just my outlook... There's something trying to be said, you just have to listen hard enough to hear the message....
Azure
January 9th, 2003, 11:14 AM
*grins* Exactly.
And the faeries are good about that message thing :)
Mystsong
January 9th, 2003, 05:49 PM
Speaking of messages from the faeries.... Every reading I've done (and even though they've all been online!) has centered around the same idea, concept, whatever you want to call it... And they're all hitting the nail right on the head with what they say about situations going on etc... Though it's envigorating (sp) and powerful and motivating... it's almost a little nerve wracking how accurate it all is...
Tomorrow's my early day out of work (I get out at noon) but I have a hair appointment at 1:30... But maybe I'll try to manage my way to getting this between the two times! I can't wait much longer!!

I was given the Healing with the Faeries Oracle cards by Doreen Virtue as a Yule present. It is my first experience with Oracle cards and I am facinated. with this set, there is not a lot of interpretation needed, it is an extremely positive deck with no dark cards or a death card. I think for myself at this time in my life in this year (I hate years when my age ends in 5) this is probably the best deck I could use.
Her website is http://www.AngelTherapy.com
I would love to hear some reading results from anyone!

ChelleofShadows,
I have that same deck, also. The first night I had it, me and my son (7) and daughter (6) were looking at the cards...and my son drew the New Location card. I thought this was interesting b/c we were thinking of switching their schools at this time. Two weeks later they started at the New Location School!
I like this deck a lot. Esp. for the times when I just don't want to hear anything negative. It's uplifting. Oh, also I like the fact that several different artists were used for the pictures. The artwork is gorgeous.

It sounds like an interesting deck. The Froud deck does have darker cards, but I find they deal with things in a less dour way than some tarot decks do. For example - I am less bothered by the appearance of the "Gloomonious Doom" card than I am by the five of Swords, although for me, they have very similar meanings. It's easier to see the cause and solution with the fairy card, and the tarot card may just make me more depressed. . . Even though, as I ssaid, to me the message is very similar.

I'm SO excited... less than 45 minutes and I'll have the deck! :boing:
Does anyone keep a journal of readings they've received?? I was thinking about doing this, but wasn't sure if it was a good idea or not...

I have a journal that I use only for my notes and readings with the Faeries' Oracle. It's a journal with Taitin the Sylph (by Brian Froud) on it.
As for the darker images in the Tarot and the Faeries' Oracle, sometimes we need those card to help us to see the darker side of life that we try to ignore.

The other deck that I had mentioned in an earlier post has darker faeries in it. I'm still getting acquainted with it. The artwork is similar to that of the Sacred Circle cards, which are also created by Franklin & Mason.

I got this deck the other day & got rid of it the next. I thought I would really like it, but when I got the chance to finally look at all the cards, there were only 5 I liked. (Death was my favorite.)
I started sorting them out to decide to keep them or not and this was the conclusion I came to:
11 of them were almost the same- a white smear on a blue background
5 or 6 were sort of variously gross semi-nude women- ick.
33 of them were just butt-ugly ! Like grotesque garden gnomes on acid or sickening crossbreeds of something or other.
I realize I am in the minority, but I am very critical . I just couldn't keep a deck that had that many annoying cards in it.

I like this deck because it's not all nice, nice, fluff, fluff, fancy, tinkerbell type fairies. It's real. Life is not always pretty. And I don't find any of the 'women' ugly, I find them all beautiful. I find all of the cards beautiful in their own way.

Amulet you thought that about the Froud deck? Hmmm. I think it's gorgeous, and nothing in the deck looks like a "smear" to me. I think you probably mean the singers, but not sure. And I'm pretty snooty about artwork.
One of the things I like about it is that these are very like the actual little people of fairy tales and legends, not the sanitized Disney versions (though they have their place too).
And I think the women are lovely, although only a few have conventionally ideal figures (and to set the record straight, I have a pretty ideal figure).
Oh well, I guess to each his own - but you might want to pick up a copy of "Good faeries/Bad faeries" and look at the larger versions of the pictures.

I agree. And you are perfectly entitled to your opinion. i never suggested otherwise
However, please don't misquote mine - I said this artwork was profoundly unlike Disney and fluffy stuff, which I dislike as well.
I just felt the need to respond to negative commentary - especially when it paints an inaccurate picture of the work (see "smears" remark above). I recommended the larger work because the detail is much more obvious.
If you find it "annoying" you shouldn't use it. The readings you get won't be very helpful for you.

But you should definitely stick with a deck that speaks to you. I got a new one today that I bought for the art, that turns out to be very promising.

__The thread has had overwhelmingly positive things to say & I have been the only dissenter. It's just my opinion & my reaction to the deck . I wish I had read a negative review of it before I bought it , because I would have looked into it much more deeply than I did & saved myself some money.
*especially when it paints an inaccurate picture of the work (see "smears" remark above). I recommended the larger work because the detail is much more obvious.
__If your artwork loses detail when reduced in size, there should be an effort made to enhance it somehow.( I am an artist, & I have made quite a few smears in my life.) I could put up with a few similar cards in a deck, but 11 of them plus numerous other cards that looked about the same but in different colors was just too much.
I did not find you grumpy - it is , after all, only a deck of cards we are discussing. I didn't tell anybody they had an ugly baby!

Amulet, you can post reviews at most of those online book like amazon and chapters and barnes & noble. It would help someone else trying to decide.
I just bought the Faeries Oracle. I've always loved Brian Froud's artwork & have been hemming and hawwing about getting the deck. I have to admit, my first reaction when I opened the box was not great. The book that came with the deck was not lamenated properly. The back cover was all covered with wrinkles. I know it sounds silly but I love my books...and that they can ship out a book in this condition made me wonder how careful they were about the quality of the cards. I took the cards out of the box and I was disappointed. The card stock they used was a very light stock. I have cheap playing decks that were sturdier than these! I considered putting the whole thing back in the box and returning it. As I started to flip through the cards, I started to get mesmerized by the pictures. There were pictures that I didn't care too much for and some that I love. One thought that came to me was that it's not about the paper quality or the pretty colours...it was about the message these faeries were trying to tell me. I could feel the energy coming out of these cards. While I still think the quality of the cards could be better, I'm starting to really like them. I'm just going to have to learn how to shuffle gently, I think! :)

To me, it's not about the card stock or the quality of the book, it's the images and how they speak to me. And the images on this deck speak to me in more ways than one. I can focus on an image, close my eyes and have a full conversation with the fae in the picture. They are as real to me as anyone standing next to me. And it's wonderful for my son. He loves to look at the pictures and ask the faeries all sorts of questions. To me, the answers he gets tell me that the fae are real because there is no way a five year old could make up some of the things they tell him.

At first, though i had a pretty good idea of what i was getting into, the Singers threw me a little... I won't deny that... But the more time I spend with them the more individual they are... Their messages are very specific to each one of them... As I find with every other card. I just wish I was a bit better of an artist for the centering card....
I'm still trying to find a more appropriate "storage" of the cards when they're not in use, but the relationship builds anyway... And I find myself in midconversation with at least one of them at the most random times... Though conversing despite the music I'm listening to seems to be becoming quite regular on my way home from work at night... I think they get a kick out of trying to better my "I hate my job" mood!

I started out with Healing with The Faeries, with the easy to interpret meanings, but I sort of... Got bored with the good happy jolly fluffy pictures so I put them away for a long time. Then I went to my friends house who had bought a new tarot that she didn't feel comfortable with. She said it was too advanced for her or something. When I saw those cards my heart flipped. I loved them. It was Brian Froud and Jesca MacBeth'sdeck. I love Brian Froud's work, I own every book he's ever put out, and ran around for a month looking for a journal like my friend had "The Dark Lady". She offered to trade with me. OMG. I spent the first night sewing up a sweet little black velvet pouch by hand for them.
I love my cards. I like them better without the book because I can draw on my own interpretations.

Here's an interesting question (at least to me)
Last night I did a couple short one-card readings throughout the night... However, two questions I asked could be very loosely connected (one was a general question and the other a little more specific), and even after good suffleing every time, the same card came up on both of those questions... Though I found this interesting, and have kind of begun to draw my own conclusions, I was wondering if anyone had any other oppinions on it that might be helpful...

I bought the Froud Faeries Oracle for myself a little while before Yule, but I just haven't been able to connect with it. I love the pictures, the book, the whole idea, but it doesn't speak to me. I don't feel the faeries in my life. :( I've tried inviting them in, singing (well, humming), just generally being open to them, and nothing. I worked with the cards for quite a little while before I put them away. I don't know what to say. I love the artwork, but they just don't seem to work for me. I have no problem with Tarot, but I'm starting to think oracle decks just aren't right for me. :(
Does anyone maybe have some suggestions to help me out? I've tried the exercises in the book, as well as the standard way I get to know a deck. That is, looking at all the cards and writing down what I feel, etc. Or maybe faeries just aren't around for me right now.

I have that deck. The paintings are so magical and captivating! I really like the book, I've almost gotten to the point where I don't need to look at the "meanings" of the cards in the book to read them.

I use the Faeries Oracle and love them!!! Yes, it is an on-going thing to find the right spread to use. If I am reading for someone that is sitting in front of me, it is much easier and I just use the Faerie Spread that is in the book. Basically, to let the querent pulled the cards and lay them out as they want, watching carefully on my part as to the sequence of the cards!
I have had the most successful readings for myself and others than I have ever had before. I often think that if I look under the cards I will see a little Faerie there guiding them, it is that successful, even a little eerie sometimes in the way they answer the question so accurate!!

I've had this deck for a couple of months now. It's probably not going to be my "main" deck but I still enjoy going through the cards every now & again. When I do use it, it's really good but I get the impression it's laughing at me most of the time. I don't think the time is right for us yet but there is a connection between us.

I can really understand, I have several Tarot Decks, you do need to find the one that speaks to you personally.
I always carry on me the Witches Tarot, I have slept with it under my pillow many a night and have a special connection with them also. But to tell the truth, I didn't need to do that with my Faeries Deck, it was like the connection was from the instant I held them in my hands. My readings are always amazing and I just walk away shaking my head.
You can can use just about any spread with them. But the one I like is the "Faerie Spread" or I use the "Witches Tarot" and when you pull a 'King, Queen, Prince or Princess' card you are suppose to pull an additional card - I will pull one of my Faeries for clarification on the subject.
There are always different ways to read the Cards, you just have to find the one that works for you!

I have the Froud deck and I just recently bought the Fairy Ring deck as well...only I need to take back the one I just bought. I opened it all up and found there were no cards in it! Just the book...*sigh* But, yes, I love Froud...I own both the Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, as well as Good/Bad Faeries...
I love the fae! Each one is so mysterious and so intimately serious about who (or what) they might seem to be...and what they really are. They live in a whole other world...
Has anybody been to FaeryLand?

Reading this thread makes me want to pick up my cards again. I haven't been messing with Tarot and the like for a very long time.. and I have no idea why. Just in a funk, I guess. 8O
Thanks, all, for renewing my yearning to learn about the Fae.
*hugs all around*

The Faery Oracle deck is a beautiful deck, the artwork is absolutely amazing, but I feel more comfortable working with the Faery Ring deck for some reason. It may just be me. Have any of you used Poppy Palin's Wild Spirit Tarot? It's another deck with amazing art work, and a wonderful spirit.
Where is Faeryland? Why just the other side of the lilac bushes of course....everything I've read would make me think that Faeryland exists parallel to our physical plane. Of course, the Faery have no trouble contacting us here, but we have to work at it a bit to contact them sometimes.

Actually the artisit is Poppy Palin. She completely reworked the traditional tarot using themes and archtypes from myths and folklore, especaily of the British Isles, but not exclusively. I just plain fell in love with the artwork, it is so vibrant and alive. Even though the deck structure is linked to the tradional RW, the way she interprets and explains the cards is really very thought provoking. I've just really enjoyed working with these cards.

I just found this thread and went to the site and asked a question...and voila! Here's what I got...
Starter Reading: The Maiden signifies new beginnings and growth. You couldn't ask for a more auspicious card than this if you are beginning something new. Spontaneity, joy, growth, exhilaration, and promise for the future are signified here. We must note also that, in the early stages of any process, there is vulnerability and a need for protection, shelter, and guidance, but there is also a magical impetus toward burgeoning growth. Trust the process--but take care of the details as well. The Maiden is also the inner child who needs to be under the supervision of a competent inner adult in order for her to feel secure and loved. She is not happy when we spoil her. Consider what is growing in your life. Make a list of your hopes, dreams, and plans. Look for the growth within you, and think about how you can cherish and nurture that. Bless the growth you see around you.
I want this deck!!!!
