View Full Version : Which Dress is Best?
Flar's Freyja
December 30th, 2002, 12:21 AM
Okay - I had a dress picked out for our handfasting, but when Flar's mom and I were looking at fabrics, we found another, ready-made dress in the site's budget section that Flar's mom was crazy about. Just for the fun of it, I made an offer that I felt was ridiculously low and was shocked when it was accepted! Flar likes the first dress better, but I'm more drawn to the second one.
Just thought I'd give y'all something to do...........

Looks like #2 is winning so far......I'm mailing the money today, and will have to decide by the time she receives it! I still think they're both beautiful....Flar is even playing around with the idea of trying to get both of them ;)
They're not kidding when they say weddings are stressful - even small ones. I've been talking about this handfasting with my high priest for six months - and even brought Joe over there to show him the grounds - and last night received an e-mail from him saying that it can't be held there that weekend! This also implies that my friend and high priestess can't officiate, either, and I haven't been able to get in touch with her to find out for sure. And - he offered me another date - March 31 - which doesn't work because Flar's parents have already made their arrangements to get off work, and for gods' sake we picked the date because of the significance of Imbolc AND the fact that it's at new moon.......When I explained that, he e-mailed back and said he'd figure something out, but I'd already gotten snippy and told him to forget it, we'd just do it at our house....
This right after I got an NSF notice from the bank charging me $88 in fees when TWO deposits were made that day......Flar had his work cut out for him de-stressing me last night - but he did a fine job ;)

The second page is the same dress showing all angles, with and without the wrap, etc.
The one on the first page that we're looking at is the Irish Gown. It's about halfway down. Sorry about that.....some people already knew that because I showed it to them in a few other threads.

is there any way you could add dark accents to #2, or make some kind of cloak ??? :)

Flar's mom loved the cloak on another page, but we really can't afford it right now. Heather, the seamstress, said that the picture really doesn't do that dress justice - and it IS a wedding dress, so all white is traditional. I also love the Irish Gown in blue, and velvet is nice for a February handfasting.
Flar had fun measuring me ;) And if we take the second dress, she's going to have to cut off ten inches of length!

(But they are both pretty Freyja. Either way you're gonna look great).

Well, personally I can't pick between them either:D Can you afford both? You could wear the second for the actual handfasting and the first would make a great "let down your hair and celebrate" dress!!!!:D Mind you, I would actually like taking the overdress from the first and wearing it with the second.... But then I've always been a little ecclectic...

Is it a pagan superstition that the bethrothed isnt supposed to see the wedding dress before the actual wedding?
I know my scottish grandmothers were great believers in it

I'm not sure if it's of pagan origin or not, as my Italian Catholic family also believed something similar - but it was that the groom should not see the bride IN her wedding dress before the wedding.

I stick with my I like the second one, but if you could get some darker accents added in it would be nice... to make it more pagany for Flar.. ;)

Now for my two cents... :p
I voted for number two- as a wedding dress it is stunning! So romantic...*sigh*
But number one has some really good features too- you can wear it again for one. I also think it would be more appropriate for a handfasting it you are going for a very Irish/Pagan/Medieval type feel. Sorry I cannot explain that last part better, I hope you KWIM.
I have to second shnen- either way you are going to be absolutely gorgeous!

I voted for # 2..
Both are nice, but the second one hit my eye more.
However, it's *your* day, so wear which one you like best, no? :)

It just struck me that Flar is Christian and it seems he's the one who'd rather have a more "pagany" look
Shnen - I do have that silver wrap that he bought me a while ago, that might look better with the dress than the wrap that it comes with, so I'd have to see how it looks....
The Irish gown with a velvet overdress is a bit more expensive - Flar's mom has offered to pay for it but I'm not sure I want to let her......we can have it made in royal blue in the cotton.
I want the white one and as much as Flar likes the other one, I think that's what I'm going to go with......I do have some questions that have to be answered first and e-mailed Heather this morning.....I'm wondering if cutting so much off is going to affect where the empire waist falls and if the sleeves may not also be way too long.
I may be posting another thread to get your ideas on how to decorate the house. I think that we will be having the ritual here instead of at Circle.....and if it does turn out to be warm enough out, there is a nice wooded area directly behind the house that we could use.
Thanks so much to all of you for your help :heartthro

As for the not seeing the dress before and such...isn't there also something about virgins and white?? I am telling you the first dress is for you!! LOL!!! They are both awesome! I can't wait to see it on you in person!

If I didn't know you better I'd have to take your post as questionable  ~ the recommendations for an Imbolc handfasting are that the bride wear white and the groom wear blue. In Christian traditions, white does represent virginity but to me it represents purity of spirit which has little to do with physical virginity.....and this sabbat represents light, so these are the correspondences I'm going by. The blue represents the sky.
Doesn't look like we can afford the first one in velvet and I'm not sure I want to go with the cotton, so it's still looking more like the white gown.

Weeellllllllllllllllll
Hubby and I had our pictures made BEFORE the wedding so he had no choice but to see me. Our wedding was outside and the photographer needed the light. It's been 16 years!:)
And as far the white dress somewhere I once read that the white was a sign of joy. :D I like that symbolism.
I'm so excited for ya'll!

Yep - I immaculately conceived those three boys.......I plead insanity for being married to their father.......but they turned out well anyway ;)
>sigh< I wish I didn't love both dresses so much. I'm having a hard time conceiving  that the Irish gown with a cotton overdress will be as pretty as if it were done in velvet. But Flar really, really likes that one and so I'm slowly turning that way 'cause when it comes to him I just can't say no......

Thanks, all of you. In the voting, the white Princess gown won - but I can't resist his lil puppy dog face, and we've decided on the Irish gown, in royal blue cotton for the overdress. Flar's mom gave me a beautiful necklace with teardrop stones in light blue and amber and I need to find some amber earrings to go with it. Amber is Freyja's stone..... I think I'll wear a pair of antique slippers that my Granny left me with it. They have almost no heel - Flar is not much taller than me so it's either flats or go barefoot to avoid being taller than he is......So, we have something old, something new, something blue - I'll have to come up with something to borrow......
At midnight Flar kissed me and said that I have one more month of freedom

Flar really really really loved the blue dress, so I caved  Seriously, since the white dress was already made, I had concerns about the fit. According to the measurements, it was made for a taller person. When Flar measured me, we found that I've apparently shrunk down to only five feet tall (I used to be 5'2") She was willing to hem it, but I worried that it would change the fit and that the sleeves might also be way too long.
And I ordered silver trim :bigredgri

Semele is supposed to be asking Mol for ideas about that, if she can catch him relaxing for a few minutes.
Another friend has just offered her home. She has a beautiful Zen garden in the yard where we've done ritual, and if it happens to be warm enough outside we could have the ritual outdoors, and still be able to get into a house quickly. It would be nice to have it at our house, but I can't even sage the place due to Flar's inability to tolerate things like sage and incense. I know that I could cleanse with water and salt but it just isn't the same for me. My friend's garden area has some very good energy.
I also posted a thread over in the Green Room for feasting ideas.
