My son Michael has to go in for surgery on Tuesday. He will be having his tonsils and adnoids removed and having tubes put in his ears. I know a few people have already told me (IRL) its only tonsils, but he's my baby, and mom (me) is starting to bug!!!! He has a hearing loss that no other pediatritian till now has found or noticed, thats why he is getting the tubes put in. It has also impaired his abillity to read, he has never been able to hear his phonics correctly. I just want the surgery to go smothly and properly and him to have as little pain as possible. He's not real tuff when it comes to pain :( and neither am I seeing him in it! Of course Mom is the rock of Gibralter in front of him!!!
Any energies or prayers sent our way would be greatly appreciated!!!
Blessed Be!

You got it!
If it makes you feel any better, my brother and cousin both had this done when they were kids. Came through with flying colors and both can hear really well now. :)

Energy on the way. Now here is a little snippit of advice if you want it. As a pediatric nurse I have seen far too many kiddos spend more time than necessary in the hospital after this surgery for one simple reason. STRAWS!!! They are the enemy for the first couple of days. Sucking encourages bleeding and can make things unbearable. The kids swallow the excedss blood and then get nauseated and you can just imagine what vomiting does to that tender area. One toddler had to go back to surgery and even get blood because of active bleeding caused by the evil little spill proof sippy cups that they have to suck on.
No Straws...did I drill that in good enough?

December 30th, 2002, 05:13 PM
Oh, most deffinatly no straws!!! No one at the hospital even mentioned anything like that to us!!! They say he will be out that afternoon, I am just hopping that he does not have my reaction to anesthesia (I dont like to wake up! I have told his docs about this too) The most I have been told so far, is too keep him off citrus poducts, because it will burn his throat, but that seemed kind of obvioius anyway! Why dont they say anything about the straws???
Thank you all for the thoughts and energies, I will take all of them with me in the morning!!!!! ((((((:heartthro All :heartthro)))))

Not sure, but we have gotten kids to the floor from recovery with straws given to them by the recovery nurses!!
Just make sure he does drink as much as possible because they can get dehydrated real quick. That is one of the things that will result in a night in the hospital. Of course if he is slow to wake up he may spend the night anyway. Ask them to give him the oral pain med as soon as possible. Usually it is liquid Lortab and if they start off swallowing that it may make drinking easier. A lot of times the try to drink without any pain med and it hurts so they wont even touch the pain med.
Good luck. We will be thinking of you both!

We got home around 3:30 this afternoon. The doc said his adnoids were record breakers, that he had never seen any this huge!!! But the surgery went well, and in the words of the doc "he was tough as nails!!!" He did make the mistake of chewing his Valium this morning, but that just made it work quicker;) He can hear me whisper now! Already told his brother that he's toooo loud! He was amazed that he can breathe thru his nose instead of his mouth, and even now, as he naps on the couch, he is not snoring! Which is something he has done back as far................he been snoring since he was 2!! I dont know how I am going to sleep now! Ive been so used to him, listening to him breathe (sleep apnea) he stops, I wake up. Now thats gone!!! He says his throat doesn't hurt too bad, and he has been a super trooper today!!!!!;) :D
Thanks again for all the energies and thoughts sent to us!!! I hope his recovery goes as smoothly as his day in hospital today!!!!

Can anyone her give me an idea of what to feed him, besides jello and ice cream??? Tonight he asked me when could he have dinner, and when I told him what the doc said he sould have, he started to cry. He made me cry. He's hungry and he tried some chicken soup broth and a tiny bit of noodles and that didn't work. What about scrambled eggs? They said he can have soft foods, but I must be going brain dead cuz I cant think of any!!!! He HATES oatmeal, malt-o-meal or any of those things. All his instructions say is , soft diet. I have had a bland diet in hospital, but not a soft one.
Help! Kunfused in the Kitchen!!!!!
Other than this, hes doing great!!! Happy New Year!!!! :heartthro

so glad he's doing well!!!! I think the eggs should work. Also the instant breakfast things is what I used recently when I had my wisdom teeth removed. they come in different flavors.

Well, I replied via PM, but just in case you come here first give him anything that doesn't crunch when you eat it. Mashed potatoes are awesome if he likes them. They can fill him up and give him energy to play which always makes them feel better.
Glad he did so well!

Thanks again Semele!! And everyones suggestions!!:)
He did chicken noodle soup tonight and said he was full!!!:nonono: I think I'll try the yogurt in the morning. I wish he would eat cottage cheese in the first place, but he still thinks its nasty!!! So did I when I was his age!!!
I hope he wants to sleep in his own bed tonight and not on the couch again...................he's got me pooped!!!

VB, saying a 'soft diet' puts me in mind of babyfood. You know when baby is just starting out on solids? Now I don't mean go stocking up on those little jars, I mean, cook your normal meals then shove it all (ok, maybe each part seperate. veges, meat, etc) in one of those food processors.
WynterWynd
January 2nd, 2003, 12:02 AM
I was actually thinking of that too! But he does still (and so do I ) like the baby food bananas!!!;)

Good luck to you guys.

January 4th, 2003, 10:23 PM
Unfortunatly, he has always been a texture eater. So if anythig is toooo mushy, he wont eat it any way! Today we had it going on!! Grape Jello for breakfast, ice cream for a snack, scrambled eggs for lunch, but then he wanted to try some of the ground beef I was cooking ( I had it as tiny as I could get it) and it made him cry....and we know where that puts me :wah: (when hes not lookin'!!!) Now he's having a popcicle to numb up his throat.:(
