WASHINGTON – Nine suspects tied to a Christian militia in the Midwest are charged with conspiring to kill police officers, then attack a funeral in the hopes of killing more law enforcement people, federal prosecutors said Monday...

Sickening. And worse I am very close to people who either support these loons or don't believe it happened at all.

I have a sneaky feeling the judge won't be very easy on them.

I believe that this article by Chris Hedges at today's CommonDreams, is a good analysis of the danger we face: http://www.commondreams.org/view/2010/03/29-2

(I'm not providing an extract here, because I don't want to distract from the original topic, which is an important one. I just think that the Hedges piece is very relevant and timely.)

That's a very real possibility. I dunno enough to know for sure, however, it does seem that compromise is becoming a dirty word in politics while things like Palin's "Reload" map are seen as good leadership.

But I don't know why we want fascism ... there aren't many benefits to a fascist society. I could see the appeal for monotheists -- so much the better if they can intimidate the "cultists" into the church. But as far as the country itself, they wouldn't get much in the way of help. Fascists tend to go after any type of free thought, crush opposition and unions, and usually find a scapegoat who suffers terribly.

CNN now has video of them training:

The group says on its Web site that Hutaree means "Christian warrior" and proclaims on its home page, "Preparing for the end time battles to keep the testimony of Jesus Christ alive."

Sick, sick, sick.

Yeah, I suppose. I've come to the realization that morons are morons, no matter what religion, political party, etc. they come from. What's even worse, to me, is that they would dare hold up their faith, as if it gives them an excuse for this atrocity.

Really, who has time for such organized hatred? Don't they get headches? Or ulcers?

So, will Glenn Beck call them terrorists or freedom fighters?

I haven't watched the video, but, thanks for the description, it's funny, didn't St. Paul say something like 'our battle is not against flesh and blood, but, against spiritual Powers and dark forces' or something similar?, it seems maybe they should read their Scriptures more closely before waging "war" on those they don't like.

Sick, sick, sick.

You'd think, but, then some people just like holding onto hatred and being bitter all the time, it's even common among some Pagans (it would be good if we could just gather all the Fundamentalist Christians, Fundamentalist Muslims, extremist Pagans (the ones that are really anti-Christian), and just dump them on some island and never deal with them again, and the rest of us could just live happily).

Since I'm not a fan of trial by media, it's a good thing at a time like this to chant the following:

"Innocent until proven guilty...innocent until proven guilty...innocent until proven guilty..."

This has as much to do with christianity as the wiccan killer does with Wicca. Their religion is irrelevant.

I was going to ask where you got the fascism thing from, and then I read snapdragons link (I don't do this normally because I know what nuttiness I will find), but I did, and between the title and almost immediately seeing a quote from Cynthia McKinney, I realized it was as looney tunes as expected...you will learn that there are times when it is just best to avoid the nuttiness.

I do agree with this, the last time a democrat president went after a religious cult Janet Reno decided to have a BBQ in Texas.

I generally fall in line with the 'innocent till proven guilty' idea. At the same time, I've experienced first hand how unstable, some militia members can be, so this story doesnt come as much of a shock. Many I have encountered tend to view their paramilitary 'training' in a religious context. I would hope that none of them would think of doing something like this.

Would be nice if there were more secular militia groups, but since they pretty much make up their own rules, I dont see that happening anytime soon.

This does not surprise me one bit. The "Christian" militia has been known of for decades. Even the punks of the 80's knew of their rise.

Justin Raimondo, my favorite right-wing commentator, has written this thoughtful piece. It is not exclusively about the Hutaree militia, but much of it is:

In the post-9/11 era, the temptation to brand your political opponents "terrorists" appears to be overwhelming: both the right and the left have succumbed to it, and shamelessly employed such rhetoric for political gain. This is a deadly danger to democracy and must be repudiated and fought to the bitter end. The Hutaree "militia" and the other alleged "extremists" are a pretext for a crackdown on political dissent, and the Richard Nixons of this world are not alone in their propensity for repression.
