Some of you may remember a while back me posting about my middle son wanting some cards and me getting them out and showing them to all 3 boys, blah, blah, blah....
then telling them not to tell folks at school cause some people just don't or wanna understand and some folks think they're evil....yada yada yada....
A week or two ago RR (middle son) went to a friends house and took his Magic Cards. (For those that don't know these are playing cards - for the life of me I can't figure the game out.) But anyway, the friends aunt was there and asked to look at them. RR told me that she said, "Ya know, these look like tarot cards."
He said he didn't know why I won't let him tell people that we have them cause everybody's parents have them. I said, "Yeah, but do they know how to use them?" He said, "Sure they do." A few days after he made that statement the friend was over here and he said, "Friend, doesn't everybody's parents have tarot cards?" The friend agreed....of course.
Do you reckon "everybody" does have them? And if they do then what is keeping me from reading for folks? Hubby and I agreed that it'd be best just to read for folks I know.
Or this thought just now popped into my head....do you think he's building a cover cause he slipped and told somebody? I never thought he'd slip....the 7 year old, sure....but not RR.
Anyway, what do ya think?

Quite possibly he is right , everybody 'does' read tarot cards...but they don't admit it.
I think you should stick to your policies and ask your son to not be too free wheeling about the subject.

When I was young, I found out an Aunt of mine read tarot cards, I had never seen he as that 'type' of person (I was little) now I wish I had asked her more about them before she passed over. I think its true, there are alot of readers out there, they just wont admit to it, and thats sad.

It's very possible. I found out early in life that my Aunt reads cups and cards..or did. She now just reads cups. But from what i've seen, yeah, I'd have to agree that most people probably do read and won't say anything.

I think it also depends on where you live. I live in RURAL, USA....and not many people read the cards. I have to drive 25 miles to get to a New Age Store. Our local bookstore does sell a VERY limited selection of cards. So, people may have them, but I don't thing they advertise it much as our community as it's a highly religious, christian community.
I don't know many people around here that can read the cards.

Dagda, I think you hit the nail on the head. I live in rural America too. Which is why I asked RR if they knew how to use the cards - which would make a difference as to people just having Tarot Cards. I just find it hard to believe that his friends parents would have cards. Although it is just as likely that they do. But, these are the same people who, on Halloween, when I was dressed as a gypsy, jokingly asked me to read their palms, then said they really didn't want to know what was gonna happen to them because somebody might die. That tells me that they wouldn't understand Tarot. Does that make sense?

In a way it does. I had a friend that knew how to read tarot, really well, but she didn't like to do it, because she was scared of the things she saw in them. I hope that makes sense!

Since I live close to you but urban, in Nashville, what I see is the following: 1) Fundamentalists who are desperately against all forms of divination, and regard them as evil; 2) Catholics and moderate Christians with family traditions, many of whom do have card readers in the family or go to one of the many card readers in town; 3) members of other spiritualities who make use of cards and other forms of divination.
I think divination itself is pretty common based on negative evidence - that is, we may not see it out in the open, but the radicals wouldn't be raging so loud against it if it wasn't happening.
I do think lots of families do have someone who reads cards, tea leaves, whatever - even in rural America. I don't think in the current conservative climate that many people feel comfortable talking about it.
I think thought that you need to maintain that rule with your son - unfortunately, it only takes one stupid religious radical with an agenda finding out to make your life very uncomfortable in a small community.

In my experience, Tarot has been the least surprising addition to a household that I can name. There are so many different decks and widespread understanding of their significance that I do find that almost every house or at least extended family has a reader. Upon reading the first post I found myself surprised that it would even be in question, but my life might be an exception. Tarot has always been something very normal to me, as my mom reads, and it's in the family (I know how, but I prefer Playing Cards). The only people I've ever found significantly against them were the people at the church I went to for a while. But I think that normal agnostic/athiest society is just as supersitious as its always been, and Tarot is a staple of a household at least in a background-ish fashion.
Not that I think Tarot is a superstition at all. But people like to know what's coming, you know?

Thanks for your replies, and I guess your right about our area Azure - there's probably more folks than we'd guess who dabble with Tarot, or go to professional readers.
I just had another thought. As surprised as I am to think about RR friends parents having cards - do you think they'd be just as surprised to know that I read?
Heck, sometimes it still surprises me!
But I still plan to stand by our house rule.
