Pedro Alcantara De Souza, Top Amazon Activist, Shot Dead In Brazil

BELEM, Brazil — A top activist for land reform in Brazil's Amazon has been murdered, police said Thursday.

The killing came hours after a delay in the trial of a man accused of masterminding the slaying of another rain forest activist, American nun Dorothy Stang, who was shot and killed in 2005 in notoriously violent Para state.

Watchdog groups say conflicts between powerful ranchers and poor farmers over land rights have led to 1,200 murders across Brazil in the last 20 years.

In my view, this was a life that exemplified the most meaningful aspects of spirituality, politics, and personal integrity--rolled into one.

I don't know much about De Souza, but I did see a very sad documentary about Sister Dorothy and her murder. What a shame.

I would rather have Brazil have its rainforests intact, so I'm against both the big ranchers and the small ranchers because both of them are guilty of deforestation.

I find it interesting that now that he is dead he was the "top activist" yet the only thing about him on the internet (that I have found) is about his death...seems like he was unheard of before he died.
