WASHINGTON: An Arkansas man was on Friday sentenced to 10 years in jail for threatening to kill dozens of African-Americans including the then Senator and presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Paul Schlesselman was sentenced after being convicted on federal charges for conspiring to murder dozens of African-Americans, including then Senator Barack Obama, because of their race, the justice department said.

"Our nation has made great progress in advancing civil rights, but this unthinkable conspiracy is a reminder that hate-fueled violence continues to be a very real problem in so many communities," said Thomas E Perez, assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division.

"Tragedy was averted thanks to the capable work of the Crockett County Sheriff's Department and their willingness to work with the ATF, the Secret Service and the FBI," he said.

I hope the punishment was based on his actions and not his motives.

It does say that he planned to transport weapons etc... for the purpose of 'murder, robbery and burglery' that in and of itself is nothing new. What is an 'illegal' firearm for?

His mistake was admitting he was going to kill obama and Id question why he said that, was he lead, was he thinking it would make him famous? after all he consipired, he didnt commit. That could be any one of a number of fool from guns n ammo or a 1000 other similar magazines.

possession of an illegal firearm can cover a ton of areas. It can be an illegal weapon, like an automatic rifle, it can be an altered weapon, like a sawed off shotgun, or (if I'm not mistaken) it can be a weapon that is legal but the owner is not legally allowed to possess it, such as if the owner were a felon.
