Women who wear revealing clothing and behave promiscuously are to blame for earthquakes, an Iranian cleric says.
Hojjat ol-eslam Kazem Sediqi, the acting Friday prayer leader in Tehran, said women should stick to strict codes of modesty to protect themselves.
"Many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray and spread adultery in society which increases earthquakes," he explained.
Tens of thousands of people have died in Iran earthquakes in the last decade.
That's right, this man is blaming the deaths of tens of thousands of people on woman who refuse to cover themselves from ankles to fingertips. Wonderful guy.

I heard my Mum mention that, and I find it really funny.
Although, the scary part might be how many people would believe him?.

I think that by now we should not be unacquainted with this frame of mind--heck, it's been with us throughout history. Women's sexuality has been blamed as the work of the devil and the cause of all manner of evil (including the failures of men). Sound familiar?
Sure it does.

Two points:
Like it or not, he could be right. We can no more prove that angry gods aren't responsible than he can prove that they are.
Even if he is right, we know the risks smoking has on us and many of us still choose to smoke. So those of us who go out without being fully covered aren't going to stop even if it does cause earthquakes.
Either way this goes in my "so flipping what" file.

Wasn't there some 700 club type bible thumper here in the U.S. who blamed Katrina on gays or something?
Islamic fundamentalists and Christian fundamentalists are surprisingly very similar despite being mortal enemies. Kinda like Communists and Nazis.

In fairness ontop of christians following suit similarly, it wouldnt be the first time a culture blamed deviation from cultural norms on disasters.
Plagues in Europe and the slaughter of first nations spring to mind.

There is actually an experiment, very scientific and all, to see whether or not his statement is true.
For those of you on facebook, look up "Boobquake".There should be a page and an event.
"Many women who do not dress modestly ... lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes," Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi was quoted as saying by Iranian media. Sedighi is Tehran's acting Friday prayer leader.
I have a modest proposal.
Sedighi claims that not dressing modestly causes earthquakes. If so, we should be able to test this claim scientifically. You all remember the homeopathy overdose?
Time for a Boobqauke.
On Monday, April 26th, I will wear the most cleavage-showing shirt I own. Yes, the one usually reserved for a night on the town. I encourage other female skeptics to join me and embrace the supposed supernatural power of their breasts. Or short shorts, if that's your preferred form of immodesty. With the power of our scandalous bodies combined, we should surely produce an earthquake. If not, I'm sure Sedighi can come up with a rational explanation for why the ground didn't rumble. And if we really get through to him, maybe it'll be one involving plate tectonics.
So, who's with me? I may be a D cup, but that will probably only produce a slight tremor on its own. If you'll be joining me on twitter, use the tag #boobquake!

Was there a Probreast there? If not, ask the cleric if it qualifies, its his theory. If it were mine, the causal effect would have to be more local.

Maybe we just need more boobies. Maybe the guys have to join in, we need to gain weight then show off our pecks. Maybe we just don't have enough to cause the boobquake.:toofless:
