I remember reading...online or in a book ..can't remember...and not sure if it was for tatot or runes..but whatever...it said about each individual card(or rune) having so many interpretations that the diviner in training should pick one single meaning that makes the most sense and stick with it.
Most things I read say you use your intuition at the time of reading to interpret which meaning is the message at hand.

Wonder what the thoughts are on this.

I'd say it is just a suggestion for the beginner. There are many, many ways to learn. I myself relied heavily on one book when I was just starting and that one book did list several meanings for one card. So the way I would read the card would be with the best meaning that suited the question. The more the beginner uses the cards - not just in readings - but looking at the cards, shuffling, laying out one card and studying the art, picking 3 cards and trying to see how they can relate to one another, etc. the more they can see the meanings for themselves. One card can have a totally different meaning in each and every reading. Am I making sense? I think I sound like I'm rambling.

Yes you are making perfect sense.:) And I do understand that approach. And I wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong in leaving all options open rather than picking one narrow meaning for each card or rune. I wish I remembered where I read that.

While I look at the "textbook" meanings of both my tarot and runes, my interpretation is based on what I'm being given intuitively.

A very interesting example of what I think you're talking about would be the Motherpeace deck. It was designed by two people. They've each written their own books on interpretations of the deck, and their interpretations are quite different even though they created the deck together.

I agree with going with your intuition at the time of the reading. The "keywords" are just that, a place to "jump" from if you are stuck. I think of it more as word association and look to the symbols on the cards and what they mean to me. The LWB's are just the Author's possible interpretations of the card. When you read the cards, it's YOUR interpretation of the card that matters. :D
