I was just wondering why they were called "wisdom teeth"
I have mine, well the bottom ones I know of, cause I still have some gum on them. Nice huh? The top ones, can't tell. The only thing I've heard is some old thingy that says, when you get them, you've lived half your life. I'm only gonna live to be 30-40?! Nooooooo! :wah: puh-leeze

The idea was when the name was used usually you didn't get them well into your life (keep in mind, there was a time when you lived until 30, and were considered old by 20).

What I heard is that the "wisdom teeth" are associated with wisdom (and intelligence) of the person. So, the earlier they come out, the more wise and inteligent you are.. ( )

My upper wisdom teeth are barried and will never come out..
My lower wisdom teeth are supposed to come out, but no signs of them, yet.. (and I'm 26)

So, I guess the conclusion is obvious than :wah:

The only truth you need to know is that the only good wisdom teeth are pulled widom teeth.....mine were impacted and had to be removed by surgery!!!!!!!!!!!

I must be really wise then cuz I got mine when I was like 17 or so.... must of been a very wise 17 year old. I'm 21 now and still have all 4 of them, and as my family can testify, I have a big mouth, so that's the only reason I got to keep mine.

I have no wisdom teeth! I've had a full facial x-ray and they just are not there:D
My dentist said he's running into more and more people who just don't have them. He thinks it has to do with evolution. Nature gets rid of what you don't need over time;)

*SHUDDER* my dentist ALWAYS wants to rip mine out, and they hurt like...once a year for two days?? i refuse to let him do it unless it's causing a danger, which they aren't...i mean seriously, i'll get them out when they need to come out. they convinced my dad to yank his out when hewas in the army, and he said it was the worst pain...no thanks.

So that's why my brain is turning to mush?!

Apparently I've only got three. Two up top and one down the bottom. And none of them show any signs of coming out...

I had all 4 of mine taken out at once (they put me to sleep for the surgery) when I was 13, because they started coming in a week after I got my braces off, and were pushing my teeth out of wack. The only good thing about it was I got to take a week off of school....other than that, I hurt and looked like I had tenis balls stuck in my cheeks.

#@%$
I've got mine and they're biting the side of my mouth and making it painful to eat any I'm always whimpering during dinner now. I had the worst one removed on Monday and hopefully the rest will come out soon.

Then I just had mine removed a few weeks ago.....My dentist was very generous with the novicane so I didn't feel it a bit. I only took one day off work (afterwards) and slept most of the day. My jaw was a little sore for a few days but that's it.

My bottom ones are halfway in and my Orthodontist doesn't want them screwing up the job my braces did, so I have to get oral surgery to get them out. Just don't know when yet...

Oh man! :bug: Grtting your wisdome teeth removed hurts like crazy. I had mine taken out when I was 17 and the pain put me down for almost 1 1/2 weeks. But that was because I developed dry sockets and the holes had to heal from the inside out. :ugh: But the best part was going under the anethesia because it was a very very deep sleep. But as soon as they un-hooked me I woke up. Even tried to talk to a nurse about her up-coming wedding I heard her talk about in the recovery room. Not too much sucess with the talking. I'm guessing mine was so bad because I refused to take much pain medication. My brother got hooked on drugs through pain meds and I didn't want to risk it.:shaker:

My bottom ones hurt a bit coming in. It felt weird to bite down completely, like I had food stuck in the back of my jaw, and I couldn't put my incisors together. Ya know, to open those pesky ketchup packs. But I can now. I don't if I'll ever have to have mine removed. My dentist quit a while back. How nice is that? So now I have to wait for a new one to come in. I was supposed to get a filling done. AGAIN. I hate fillings. I have 6 bottom and 4 top, and a cap on one top tooth. I chipped it. Wasn't even doing anything, it just chipped off. I also use teeth whitener, so now I have this one stupid tooth that's like 2 shades yellower. Yuck. I honestly don't think I even have the top ones. If I do, they're about less than half the size they should be. I felt the back of my top gums, there isn't enough gum for a whole tooth, on either side.

How many teeth are we supposed to have? I have 14 top and 16 bottom. (that are showing)

The one I had out so far didn't hurt at all. The dentist used a local anesthetic during the operation and the only way I knew when it wore off was that I could feel both sides of my mouth again. The worst part was holding a piece of gauze in my mouth for half an hour.

Ugh, my top ones have come in, and they stick out funny and rub the inside of my mouth raw sometimes. I need to get them out but I so DREAD having that done that I just let it go...I HATE going to the dentist, for anything, much less this!!!!

I've recently got one bottom, I don't have the rest yet..... guess I'm not intelligent enough:D . But it hurts like hell, I don't blame babies for crying when they are getting their teeth.

If you count the molar I had pulled, I had 26. I have no wisdom teeth, that would have added 4 to make 30.
I do still have 1 baby tooth, I did not count it;)

I guess it varies.

MMMMM....I like the evolution theroy, I also have none. I would like to believe evolution is the natural cause, because the alternative ( just a plain idiot!) Nah, not an option:D

My teeth are SO bad. I've had tooth pain for so long that it almost seems natural. It finally got so bad though that I had to go to the dentist. I had my first tooth pulled a month ago, and I felt better. Just last week, I went back for an exam cuz I knew my teeth had problems. Yikes! He wants to pull 2 wisdom teeth, remove some fillings that are going bad, fill a cavity I didn't know I had, and do another root canal. (I've already had 2). :woah:

So I go next month for the wisdom teeth to be pulled. Some of you say it didn't hurt and somebody said they were out of school for a week and a half! So I don't know whether to be scared or not!?:shaker: Oh well, ya gotta do what ya gotta do, I guess.

We should start a separate thread on dental horror stories!!

Well...I had mine taken out over summer so I didn't miss any school. And mine hurt so much because I didn't wait for the teeth to break through the gums. The oral surgeon went in and made cuts in my gums and then cut out the teeth. I had four deep holes in my gums that took awhile to heal. So hopefully your's won't hurt as badly.
