A member asked about inscribing spells, so I thought I'd start a thread on sigil magick. I didn't understand sigils for a long time and recently attended a small lecture. I kept seeing them mentioned in books but no one had instructions on how to formulate them. I'll try to find my materials and post them. In the meantime, this site has a little bit of info:

Sigil Magick


Since Sigil Magick is generally considered Will Magick rather than Spiritual Magick or Nature Magick, the goal of sigil usage is to mobilize your unconscious mind towards accomplishing the desires of your conscious mind.

Your unconscious mind, while extremely powerful, only understands symbols sent to it from your conscious mind. It does not understand what we would consider simple and straight forward communication. Hence, the need for sigils which are really just combinations of the letters in your statement of intent (minus repeated letters, state of being verbs: is, are, etc. and any vowels).

There are many ways to use the sigils. Common methods of usage include meditating on them and then burning, burying or destroying them in some other way so that they can pass from your conscious mind into your unconscious mind. There the instructions built into their design are decoded and followed.

Other methods include placing them in plane sight and then forgetting (in your conscious mind) about them and their original purpose. The idea here is to let your conscious mind's guard down so the message can be seen unhindered by the unconscious mind. There are many other ways to utilize these powerful tools. Some of the sigils listed here appear to have only negative applications (such as the sigil on this page for "Causing Death").

The important thing to understand is that when a hex is cast, it is not always possible to create a link (physical, mental, or astral link) to the Caster. In this case you may need a sigil of the original harmful intent in order to erase or nullify it. Of course those same sigils can also be used to cause great harm.

However, the information on this site is not for beginners. It is intended for intermediate to advanced magicians and witches. Intermediate and advanced practitioners should already know that having an understanding of the tools that create harm is as important as understanding the tools that heal.

Welcome to the wonderful world of sigil magick! This is one of the main ideas of chaos magick. I'm only providing a rough outline here; for a more in-depth course, read a book. There are several good ones on sigil magick. Any half-decent occult bookstore can probably recommend one to you. Alternatively, visit the links page.

Sigil magick is based on the idea that magick is largely your subconscious at work. A sigil is made, charged, and submitted to your inner psyche for processing.
It's a fairly simple working; the hardest part is charging the sigil.


First, write a statement of your intent. Something like this: "I will lose five pounds." Try to make it as assertive as possible (ie "I will" instead of "I want to").

Now you can do one of two things, or both, whichever you want. Eliminate all the repeating letters, so it reads "I wil ose fiv pund." You can also eliminate the vowels if you want, making it "Wlsfvpnd." I find it easiest to do both (fewer letters to work with).

Now, make a sigil with your letters. This can be anything. Arrange the letters any way you want; just make sure they can't be recognized as the original statement.

Now for the hard part: charging your sigil. There are several methods you can use. First, stare at your sigil for a while, focusing all your attention on it. Don't think about your intent; you don't have to do that, because it's all put in the sigil. Then when you're ready, start charging! You can do it any way you want: sexual energy (I hope we all know what that is!), fear, love, anger, pain, whatever.

Now that you've charged it, forget everything. That's right: erase the sigil from your mind. It doesn't matter if you remember that you did a working, or what the working was for; just forget the actual sigil. This is because a big idea in chaos magick is that lust for results screws around with the natural course of the magick. Another important thing: if you're trying to lose five pounds, don't stop dieting just because you did the working. This also messes up what might happen naturally.

If it doesn't work the first time, try again! It's important to experiment when doing chaos magick. If this doesn't work for you, make up your own thing.

I'm new to this Sigil magic and from what I've read about it, yeah, it's basically how you described but there's only one part I don't understand: yeah, the charging part!

How, for example, does sexual energy or the others you mentioned help charge the sigil? How is the energy or magic transferred to the sigil?

You can visualize the energy moving into the sigil and making it grow brighter and such.
